Known for her unique blend of figurative and abstract techniques in her paintings, Sofia Muljat is making waves in the contemporary art scene in Argentina.
In this interview, Sofia opens up about her artistic journey and how her background in psychology influences her work. She talks about her recent residency in Spain and shares her plans for 2025, giving us a sneak peek into the exciting projects she has planned for the year ahead.
Q: Tell us a little about yourself and how your interest in art began.
Sofia Muljat: I was always connected to the artistic world, whether it was through music, dance or painting. When I was little, I used to paint with my grandfather, which led me to become more interested in that side. One day my mom suggested me to go to painting workshops because she noticed that I enjoyed it a lot. At the beginning I resisted, I thought that attending an institution and learning about techniques could take away the pleasure and spontaneity I felt when painting.
My university studies are in psychology. I followed other paths and it was only three years ago that I decided to try to go to a painting workshop. Since then, I have become more involved in the art world, participated in art programs in Argentina and recently attended art residencies in Spain.
Q: Having a background as a psychologist, how has this influenced your work?
Sofia Muljat: I feel that both disciplines enrich each other. The thesis I wrote for my degree in psychology was on the use of art as a tool in psychoanalysis. It is incredible the role that art plays both in the viewer and in the artist oneself. Through it, we can give entity to things that may be difficult to assimilate or communicate with words. Also, art summons us from and to places unknown to ourselves, that is fascinating. I always accompany my practice with writing, psychology has provided me with many tools, concepts and specific terms that manage to give a different twist to my visual practice.

Q: How did your work begin and how has it changed over the years?
Sofia Muljat: In the beginning, I painted very spontaneously and sporadically. I started making paintings for friends and family, but then I began to find limitations in technique and in my aspirations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I had more time available to delve into painting. I explored on my own until I finally decided to attend painting workshops. I discovered new tools, began to be more goal-oriented and increasingly delved into my practice from a different side. Undoubtedly, it marked a before and after.
Q: Your work combines the abstract with the figurative, can you tell us a little about how this came about?
Sofia Muljat: The figurative comes from my desire to have something more concrete and defined, while the abstract comes from my fluidity, feeling and intuition of the moment. In addition, the abstract gives me the air of mystery and the unknown, which I seek to balance with the closeness of figuration. The combination of the abstract and suggestions of the figurative allows me to create a good mix between cosmos and chaos, tension and harmony.

Q: All of your work is focused on painting, do you have any interest in other mediums or why has only this one caught your attention?
Sofia Muljat: I feel that oil painting gives me something unique, like the mix of movement and fluidity. I am also fascinated by its wateriness and transparencies, which I really enjoy and which I feel other materials cannot offer me. Sculptures or ceramics have a different consistency, and I feel that the body engages in a different way. I don't know if I will eventually connect with other materials, but the truth is that I haven't experimented much with them.
Q: You told us that you are very intuitive, do you have any rituals or habits that help you connect more with your intuition?
Sofia Muljat: I like to take my time. I usually put on some good music to get into the momentum, and sometimes I listen to podcasts to set the mood a bit. However, I don't have a set ritual. My practice is purely focused on connecting with the body: I am very focused on the present, I allow the ideas to flow in the moment and I don't stop to think too much about the end result. So that would be my “ritual”, in a way, to get involved and be present with the painting.

Q: Do you have any memories or experiences that have shaped your practice?
Sofia Muljat: I think my work is very personal, many times I look for inspiration in different places and take specific references, but I feel that one of the aspects that has influenced my work the most is mental health. Painting for me is like another form of therapy, and I would say that my inspiration comes from ambiguous experiences and feelings such as anguish, joy. Also, memories that marked me and that continue to undress between the brushstrokes, I think. The colors I choose also partly reflect my mood. In addition, I have noticed that the seasons also have a great impact: during the summer, I attended an artistic residency in Spain and I started to use warmer colors.

Q: Let's talk more about the mental health aspect. How do you think art has benefited you?
Sofia Muljat: In my experience, art has always been a safe haven. Life is full of uncertainty, but art somehow manages to color things in a different way. In my case, there are situations or emotions that I find difficult and I think of art as a unique way to channel them. Painting has been one of my best finds, like a friend, it has accompanied me and provided me with many tools during my personal growth. Painting for me is a shelter for my vulnerability, in a way, and a space that I definitely consider safe.

Q: Could you share more about your experience at the R.A.R.O artist residency in Barcelona, Spain? What was that opportunity like for you?
Sofia Muljat: The residency took place at a time in my life when I was trying to get more involved in the art industry. I had the opportunity to dedicate a full month exclusively to painting and creating my work. It was a different experience, as up to that point I had been studying and working on other things, so for me it meant committing to producing and focusing on painting. The residency allowed me to discover more about myself, meet other artists and other cultures.
Q: Are there any particular artists whose work inspires or motivates you?
Sofia Muljat: I like several contemporary artists, but at the same time I also take a lot of older references. For example, I love the work of Roberto Matta, Albert Oehlen and Michael Armitage. Vasili Kandinsky, Peter Paul Rubens or Michelangelo also give me a lot of inspiration and I often take their paintings as references.
Q: Is there any feeling you want to evoke in the viewer when they see your work?
Sofia Muljat: I feel that no matter how much I intend to transmit or generate something, the viewer will always perceive something very different. That's fine, I think that's also the magic of art. The latest works I have done are focused on experiencing movement and fluidity, combined with a touch of tension. I like to give myself over to the idea that my paintings are arranged so that you see what you want to see. In the end, each viewer has his or her own interpretation.

Q: What do you have planned for 2025, do you have an exhibition or a project that excites you?
Sofia Muljat: I am working on a series of paintings with gallery owner Anna Erickson, I am very excited about that. Recently, I have also finished another series of works. I feel that, when I finish a series or a project, for me it is a bit like going through a mourning, since the euphoria that accompanies exhibiting and finishing them is extinguished. Now I'm in the process of coming to terms with that, but looking forward to exploring new ideas. I am looking forward to 2025, a year full of painting and that excites me.

Conocida por su mezcla única de técnicas figurativas y abstractas en sus pinturas, Sofía Muljat está causando gran revuelo en la escena artística contemporánea argentina.
En esta entrevista, Sofía nos habla de su trayectoria artística y de cómo su educación en psicología influye en su trabajo. Además, nos habla de su reciente residencia en España y de sus planes para 2025, dándonos una idea de los apasionantes proyectos que tiene planeados para el año entrante.
P: Cuéntanos un poco sobre ti y cómo empezó tu interés por el arte.
Sofia Muljat: Siempre estuve conectada con el mundo artístico, ya sea a través de la música, el baile o la pintura. Cuando era pequeña, solía pintar con mi abuelo, lo que me llevó a interesarme más por ese lado. Un día mi mamá me sugirió ir a talleres de pintura porque notó que lo disfrutaba mucho. Al inicio me resistía, creía que asistir a una institución y aprender sobre técnicas podía quitarme el placer y la espontaneidad que sentía al pintar.
Mis estudios universitarios son en psicología. Seguí otros caminos y fue recién hace tres años que decidí intentar ir a un taller de pintura. Desde entonces, me he involucrado más en el mundo del arte, participé en programas artísticos en Argentina y, recientemente, asistí a residencias artísticas en España.
P: Al formarte como psicóloga, ¿cómo esto ha influido en tu obra?
Sofia Muljat: Siento que ambas disciplinas se enriquecen mutuamente. La tesis que elaboré para obtener mi grado en psicología fue sobre el uso del arte como herramienta en el psicoanálisis. Es increíble el papel que el arte desempeña tanto en el espectador como en el propio artista. A través de él, podemos dar entidad a cosas que pueden ser difíciles de asimilar o comunicar con palabras. También, el arte nos convoca desde y hacia lugares desconocidos para nosotros mismos, eso es fascinante. Siempre acompaño mi práctica con la escritura, la psicología me ha proporcionado muchas herramientas, conceptos y términos específicos que logran darle una vuelta distinta a mi práctica visual .

P: ¿Cómo empezó tu obra y como ha cambiado a lo largo de los años?
Sofia Muljat: Al principio, pintaba de manera muy espontánea y esporádica. Empecé a hacer pinturas para amigos y familiares, pero luego comencé a encontrar limitaciones en la técnica y en mis aspiraciones. Durante la pandemia del COVID-19, tuve mayor tiempo disponible para adentrarme en la pintura. Exploré sola hasta que finalmente decidí asistir a talleres de pintura. Descubrí nuevas herramientas, comencé a estar más orientada a objetivos y cada vez más me profundicé en mi práctica desde un lado distinto. Sin duda, marcó un antes y un después.
P: Tu obra combina lo abstracto con lo figurativo. ¿Nos puedes contar un poco sobre cómo surgió esto?
Sofia Muljat: La figuración surge de mi deseo de tener algo más concreto y definido, mientras que lo abstracto proviene de mi fluidez, del sentir y la intuición del momento. Además, lo abstracto me aporta el aire de misterio y de lo desconocido, que busco equilibrar con la cercanía de la figuración. La combinación de lo abstracto y sugerencias de lo figurativo me permite crear una buena mezcla entre cosmos y caos, tensión y armonía.

P: Todo tu trabajo está enfocado en la pintura. ¿Tienes algún interés en otros medios o por qué te ha llamado la atención solamente este?
Sofia Muljat: Siento que el óleo me proporciona algo único, como la mezcla de movimiento y fluidez. También me fascinan su acuosidad y las transparencias, que realmente disfruto y que creo que otros materiales no pueden ofrecerme. Las esculturas o cerámicas tienen una consistencia distinta, y siento que el cuerpo se compromete de otra manera. No sé si eventualmente me conectaré con otros materiales, pero la verdad es que no he experimentado mucho con ellos.
P: Nos comentaste que te dejas llevar mucho por la intuición. ¿Tienes algún ritual o algún hábito que te ayude a conectarte más con ella?
Sofia Muljat: Me gusta tomarme mi tiempo. Suelo poner buena música para entrar en la dinámica, y a veces escucho podcasts para ambientarme un poco. Sin embargo, no tengo un ritual establecido. Mi práctica se centra puramente en conectar con el cuerpo: estoy muy enfocada en el presente, permito que las ideas fluyan en el momento y no me detengo a pensar demasiado en el resultado final. Así que ese sería mi "ritual", en cierto modo, involucrarme y estar presente junto a la pintura.

P: ¿Tienes algunas memorias o experiencias que hayan marcado a tu práctica?
Sofia Muljat: Creo que mi obra es muy personal, muchas veces busco inspiración en diferentes lugares y tomo referencias específicas, pero siento que uno de los aspectos que más ha influido en mi trabajo es la salud mental. Pintar, para mí, es como otra forma de terapia, y diría que mi inspiración proviene de experiencias y sentimientos ambiguos como pueden ser la angustia, la alegría. También, recuerdos que me marcaron y que siguen desnudándose entre las pinceladas, creo yo. Los colores que elijo también reflejan en parte mi estado de ánimo. Además, he notado que las estaciones también tienen un gran impacto: durante el verano, asistí a una residencia artística en España y comencé a usar colores más cálidos.

P: Hablemos más sobre el aspecto de la salud mental. ¿Cómo crees que el arte te ha beneficiado?
Sofia Muljat: En mi experiencia, el arte siempre ha sido un refugio. La vida está llena de incertidumbre, pero el arte de alguna forma logra colorear las cosas de una forma distinta. En mi caso, hay situaciones o emociones que me resultan difíciles y pienso al arte como una manera única de canalizarlas. La pintura ha sido de mis mejores hallazgos, como una amiga, me ha acompañado y me ha proporcionado muchas herramientas durante mi crecimiento personal. Pintar para mi es una guarida para mi vulnerabilidad, de cierta manera, y un espacio que definitivamente considero seguro.

P: ¿Podrías compartir más sobre tu experiencia en la residencia artística R.A.R.O en Barcelona, España? ¿Cómo fue esa oportunidad para ti?
Sofia Muljat: La residencia tuvo lugar en un momento de mi vida en el que intentaba involucrarme más en la industria del arte. Tuve la oportunidad de dedicar un mes completo exclusivamente a pintar y crear mi obra. Fue una experiencia diferente, ya que hasta ese momento había estado estudiando y trabajando en otras cosas, así que para mí significó comprometerme a producir y concentrarme en la pintura. La residencia me permitió descubrir más sobre mí misma, conocer a otros artistas y otras culturas.
P: ¿Existen algunos artistas en particular cuya obra te inspire o motive?
Sofia Muljat: Me gustan varios artistas contemporáneos, pero a la vez también tomo muchas referencias más antiguas. Por ejemplo, me encanta la obra de Roberto Matta, Albert Oehlen y de Michael Armitage. Vasili Kandinsky, Peter Paul Rubens o Miguel Ángel también me provocan mucha inspiración y frecuentemente tomo sus pinturas como referencias.
P: ¿Hay algún sentimiento que quieres evocar en el espectador al ver tu obra?
Sofia Muljat: Siento que por más que tenga la intención de transmitir o generar algo, el espectador siempre va a percibir algo muy distinto. Está bien, creo que ahí también está la magia del arte. Las últimas obras que he hecho están enfocadas en experimentar el movimiento y la fluidez, combinadas con un toque de tensión. Me gusta entregarme a la idea de que mis cuadros se dispongan para que se vea lo que se quiera ver. En fin, al final, cada espectador tiene su propia interpretación.

P: ¿Qué tienes planeado para el 2025, tienes alguna exposición o algún proyecto que te emociona?
Sofia Muljat: Estoy trabajando en una serie de pinturas junto a la galerista Anna Erickson, eso me tiene muy contenta. Recientemente, también he terminado otra serie de obras. Siento que, al finalizar una serie o un proyecto, para mí es un poco como pasar por un duelo, ya que se apaga la euforia que acompaña exhibirlas y terminarlas. Ahora estoy en el proceso de asimilar eso, pero con muchas ganas de explorar nuevas ideas. Estoy esperando con ansias el 2025, un año muy lleno de pintura y eso me entusiasma.
