Yet against this backdrop of tension and uncertainty, art seems to follow a different course. As though the conflict had nothing to do with it, art once again takes over the monumental spaces of the Grand Palais, a kind of structural backbone where excellence and good taste are put to the test against the fluctuations of the international market, amid uneven sales, cutbacks and cancellations of all kinds.

Latin American art, despite the scale of this event, remains scarce and scattered. While it reflects no sense of continental continuity — although why should it? — certain familiar territories offer the opportunity to encounter old classics once again, those names that, however frequently seen, are always welcome.

Among them is Carmen Herrera, a fundamental figure of geometric abstraction, whose work once again reminds us of the enduring relevance of a visual language reduced to its essential elements.

Ana Mendieta also stands out. A Cuban-American artist and pioneer of performance art and practices concerned with the body and the environment, her presence through Marian Goodman Gallery takes on particular resonance this week. Adding to this is the tribute paid to the Cuban artist by OFFSCREEN Paris, where she is the guest of honour for this edition, with an installation of six films at the Chapelle Saint-Louis de la Salpêtrière. An opportunity to revisit a body of work that, decades later, continues to question the boundaries between body, nature, identity and territory.

Continuing with Cuban art, Mai 36 Galerie brings Flavio Garciandía back to Paris, one of the leading names in the island’s contemporary art scene. Associated with the conceptual renewal that transformed Cuban art from the 1980s onwards, Garciandía represents one of those artistic trajectories worth revisiting, particularly at a time when international narratives of Latin American art continue to privilege certain names over others.

From Brazil, Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel presents a carefully curated stand featuring Brazilian artists, among whom Ernesto Neto and Erika Verzutti stand out.

In the section dedicated to emerging practices, Galerie Eli Kerr presents the work of Rosario Aninat and Simon Shim-Sutcliffe in one of the proposals that draws particular attention for its curatorial approach. A stand that distinguishes itself within a section where, at times, the promise of discovering new voices becomes diluted among formulas all too familiar to the market, opting instead for a far more radical and bold.

She currently serves as Head of Artistic Projects at NOEMI Association – Espace Brownstone, Artistic Projects Coordinator at LAC – Collection Jean-Michel Attal, and lecturer in curatorial practices at IESA. She is also co-founder of (mist), a collective of Cuban art critics. Her curatorial practice explores themes of migration, exile, identity and care, with a particular focus on Latin American artists in the diaspora. She has collaborated with institutions including Galleria Continua, Cité Internationale des Arts, POUSH and the National Museum of Fine Arts of Cuba.

América Latina en Art Basel París 2026

Art Basel París llega a su quinta edición en este 2026 y, con ella, arrastra un clima particularmente tenso, entre conflictos bélicos internacionales y tensiones internas que ponen a prueba las costuras de la democracia francesa, a menos de un año de las elecciones presidenciales de 2027.

Pero en este escenario de tirantez e incertidumbre, el arte parece discurrir por otra vía. Como si el conflicto no fuera con él, vuelve a ocupar los espacios monumentales del Grand Palais, una suerte de viga maestra donde la excelencia y el buen gusto se ponen a prueba frente a los vaivenes del mercado internacional, entre ventas desiguales, recortes y suspensiones de todo tipo.

El arte latinoamericano, a pesar de la magnitud de esta cita, sigue siendo escaso y disperso. Si bien no refleja ninguna continuidad continental —aunque ¿por qué debería hacerlo?—, sorprenden algunas zonas de confort que nos permiten reencontrarnos con antiguos clásicos, esos nombres que, por más vistos que estén, siempre se agradecen.

Entre ellos destaca Carmen Herrera, figura fundamental de la abstracción geométrica, cuya obra vuelve a recordarnos la vigencia de un lenguaje reducido a sus elementos esenciales.

También sobresale Ana Mendieta, artista cubano-estadounidense, pionera del arte de acción y de las prácticas vinculadas al cuerpo y al medioambiente, cuya presencia a través de Marian Goodman Gallery adquiere una resonancia especial esta semana. A ello se suma el homenaje que OFFSCREEN París dedica a la artista cubana, invitada de honor de esta edición, con una instalación de seis películas en la Chapelle Saint-Louis de la Salpêtrière. Una oportunidad para volver sobre una obra que, décadas después, sigue cuestionando los límites entre cuerpo, naturaleza, identidad y territorio.

Siguiendo con el arte cubano, Mai 36 Galerie trae de nuevo a París a Flavio Garciandía, uno de los grandes nombres del arte contemporáneo de la isla. Vinculado a la renovación conceptual que sacudió la escena cubana a partir de los años ochenta, Garciandía representa una de esas trayectorias que merece la pena revisitar, especialmente cuando el relato internacional del arte latinoamericano continúa privilegiando unos nombres sobre otros.

Desde Brasil, Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel presenta un stand cuidadosamente curado en torno a artistas brasileños, entre los que destacan Ernesto Neto y Erika Verzutti.

En la sección dedicada a las propuestas más jóvenes, Galerie Eli Kerr presenta el trabajo de Rosario Aninat y Simon Shim-Sutcliffe, en una de las propuestas que más llaman la atención por su planteamiento curatorial. Far from proposing a homogeneous reading of Latin America, the works of Jaime Gili, Débora Delmar, Rafael D’Aló, Lucia Pizzani and River Claure form a map of tensions and affinities in which abstraction, installation, painting, sculpture, photography and conceptual research coexist.

Venezuelan artist Jaime Gili (Caracas, 1972) comes to the fair with a selection of works derived from Conuco, a project recently developed in London and shaped by memories, displacement and reflections on landscape. His new paintings emerge from his observation of a small conuco on the outskirts of Caracas, from reading José Eustasio Rivera’s The Vortex, and from a growing concern with the relationship between nature, cultivation and cultural memory. The organic curves that run through these works contrast with the geometric structures that have characterised much of his practice, creating a language in which vegetation, spontaneous growth and the force of gravity appear to challenge the certainties of rationalist modernity.

Gili’s work also operates as a critical reconsideration of the Venezuelan modernist imaginary. In place of the order of the grid and the promises of constructive abstraction, the artist proposes an aesthetic closer to the organic processes of the forest, the cultivated plot and the living landscape.

From London, where he is currently based, the idea of the greenhouse becomes a powerful metaphor for diaspora: working with the symbolic materials of a territory to which one no longer physically belongs, but which continues to grow in memory.

If Gili examines territory through painting, Mexican artist Débora Delmar (Mexico City, 1986) turns her attention to the invisible architectures that regulate social relations. At Paraíso, she presents Limits and Acquisition Agreement, two works that deepen an ongoing investigation into bureaucracy, mobility, citizenship and structures of power.

Limits emerged from Delmar’s residency at Stanley Picker Gallery and takes as its point of departure the systems of spatial control used in cultural institutions and private spaces. The work was constructed from the gallery’s former blue velvet ropes and crowd-control barriers, once used inside Stanley Picker House to protect the art collection and regulate the movement of visitors. Reconfigured by the artist, these everyday objects cease to function merely as museographic devices and instead become a sculptural structure that interrogates ideas of access, exclusion and belonging.

The piece operates simultaneously as sculpture, obstacle and social device: visitors cannot pass through it, but must move around it, negotiate its presence and adapt to its boundaries. The physical experience thus becomes a powerful metaphor for contemporary borders and for the visible and invisible mechanisms that condition our movement through social space.

Acquisition Agreement, meanwhile, transforms the contract for the acquisition of an artwork into the artwork itself. Delmar continues to explore legal and administrative language not simply as a form of institutional critique, but as aesthetic material capable of revealing the structures that shape the circulation of art, creative labour and the production of value. Her practice demonstrates that bureaucratic systems are not abstract mechanisms, but forces that shape everyday experience and the possibilities of belonging.

Also marked by the experience of displacement, Brazilian artist Rafael D’Aló (Porto Alegre, 1981) presents two recent works: the painting Notes from a Past Life and the sculpture Father Figure. Both investigate memory, not through explicit recollection, but through what remains inscribed in the body and accompanies the individual unconsciously.

D’Aló understands artistic experience as a profoundly physical event. For him, even in an era dominated by the digital circulation of images, perception remains embodied. His paintings function as spaces of transition in which notes, gathered images and accumulated experiences form new associations. His sculpture, made in aluminium from moulded and assembled flamboyant tree pods, introduces an almost anthropomorphic presence that confronts the viewer with the materiality of space.

The condition of being a foreigner runs through much of his practice. Yet rather than presenting it as an experience of exclusion, D’Aló understands it as an opportunity for learning. His works suggest that inhabiting the world through displacement involves developing new forms of attention, openness and listening. In this sense, memory appears less as a reconstruction of the past than as a territory for possible encounters.

The relationship between nature, knowledge and transformation lies at the centre of Lucia Pizzani’s (Caracas, 1975) practice. One of the most established voices of the Venezuelan diaspora in the United Kingdom, Pizzani presents at Paraíso a group of ceramic sculptures and works on paper emerging from research developed across Mexico, Brazil and Europe. Together, they affirm a practice that approaches the natural world as a living archive of knowledge, displacement and shared histories.

The works on view belong to projects exploring plant intelligence, ecological systems and forms of communication within the natural world. Through anthropomorphic forms, seeds, pods, plant impressions and fossils, Pizzani seeks to bring viewers closer to forms of life often perceived as passive, emphasising plants’ capacity to communicate, cooperate and sustain complex networks of interdependence. English clays bear the imprint of Mexican maize or incorporate elements collected from Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, creating objects in which geographical and cultural memory accumulates in multiple layers.

Pizzani works at the intersection of art, science and ancestral knowledge. Rather than illustrating ecological concepts, her works seek to grant agency to plants and question the hierarchies that place the human being at the centre of worldly experience. At a moment defined by the climate crisis, her practice offers a perspective capable of connecting geological time, evolutionary processes and patterns of migration. Nature ceases to function as a backdrop and instead becomes an active subject within the narrative.

Meanwhile, Bolivian artist River Claure (Cochabamba, 1997) presents a photograph from the series in which he reinterpreted The Little Prince through Andean landscapes.

Although it is one of his earliest projects, the work already anticipates concerns that continue to shape his practice: the construction of identity, modes of representation and the relationship between personal memory and collective imagination. Claure works from photography, but his images begin as drawings and visual scripts. The result is not documentary in any strict sense. The artist describes his works as directed scenarios in which characters, landscapes and symbols interact in order to question the expectations frequently projected onto the Andean world. Flowers, traditional dress and literary references are displaced from their usual contexts to generate new readings of Bolivian history and contemporaneity.

More recently, his work has turned towards the ethical implications of representing Indigenous communities and territories historically positioned at the margins of dominant narratives. This concern has not led him to abandon a dreamlike visual language, but rather to examine more deeply the power relations involved in every act of image-making. Moving between play, staging and cultural critique, Claure constructs a body of work that challenges both inherited stereotypes and traditional ways of looking at landscape.

Taken together, the practices brought together at Paraíso Art Fair point to a significant transformation within contemporary Latin American art. The question is no longer one of representing national identities or asserting closed regional narratives. What emerges instead is a constellation of investigations in which memory intersects with migration, ecology with history, and individual experience with global structures of power.

From Jaime Gili’s conuco to Débora Delmar’s bureaucratic systems; from Rafael D’Aló’s bodily memories to Lucia Pizzani’s plant intelligences and River Claure’s Andean imaginaries, Paraíso Art Fair emerges as a space in which Latin America ceases to be understood as a fixed geography and instead becomes a territory of constant translation, exchange and reinvention. In London, that hybrid condition finds an especially fitting setting: a city which, like the works brought together at the fair, is itself shaped by displacement, encounter and overlapping memories.

Artistas para descubrir en Paraíso Art Fair

Esta semana abre en Londres la primera edición de Paraíso Art Fair, un espacio que reunirá a un conjunto de artistas latinoamericanos cuyas propuestas revelan algunas de las preocupaciones más urgentes del arte contemporáneo de la región: la migración, la memoria, la ecología, la identidad y los sistemas que organizan nuestra vida cotidiana.

Lejos de plantear una lectura homogénea de América Latina, las obras de Jaime Gili, Débora Delmar, Rafael D’Aló, Lucia Pizzani y River Claure conforman un mapa de tensiones y afinidades donde conviven la abstracción, la instalación, la pintura, la escultura, la fotografía y la investigación conceptual.

Lo que distingue a esta primera edición de Paraíso no es únicamente la diversidad de lenguajes y técnicas visuales, sino la manera en que cada artista convierte experiencias personales y contextos específicos en plataformas para pensar cuestiones de alcance global.

El venezolano Jaime Gili (Caracas, 1972) llega a la feria con una selección derivada de Conuco, proyecto desarrollado recientemente en Londres y atravesado por recuerdos, desplazamientos y reflexiones sobre el paisaje. Sus nuevas pinturas nacen de la observación de un pequeño conuco en las periferias de Caracas, de la lectura de La vorágine de José Eustasio Rivera y de una preocupación creciente por la relación entre naturaleza, cultivo y memoria cultural. Las curvas orgánicas que atraviesan estas obras contrastan con las estructuras geométricas que han caracterizado gran parte de su producción, generando un lenguaje donde la vegetación, el crecimiento espontáneo y las fuerzas de la gravedad parecen desafiar las certezas de la modernidad racionalista.

La obra de Gili opera además como una revisión crítica del imaginario moderno venezolano. Frente al orden de la retícula y las promesas de la abstracción constructiva, el artista propone una estética más cercana a los procesos orgánicos de la selva, del huerto y del paisaje vivo.

Desde Londres, donde reside actualmente, el concepto de invernadero se convierte en una potente metáfora de la diáspora: trabajar con materiales simbólicos de un territorio al que ya no se pertenece físicamente, pero que continúa creciendo en la memoria.

Si Gili examina el territorio desde la pintura, la mexicana Débora Delmar (Ciudad de México, 1986) dirige su atención hacia las arquitecturas invisibles que regulan nuestras relaciones sociales. En Paraíso presenta Limits y Acquisition Agreement, dos obras que profundizan en una investigación sostenida sobre burocracia, movilidad, ciudadanía y estructuras de poder.

Limits surge de una residencia realizada por Delmar en la Stanley Picker Gallery y toma como punto de partida los sistemas de control espacial utilizados en instituciones culturales y espacios privados. La obra fue construida a partir de los antiguos cordones de terciopelo azul y separadores de espacio empleados en la propia galería ubicada dentro de la Casa Stanley Picker, donde originalmente cumplían la función de proteger la colección de arte y regular la circulación de los visitantes. Reconfigurados por la artista, estos elementos cotidianos dejan de ser simples dispositivos museográficos para convertirse en una estructura escultórica que interpela las nociones de acceso, exclusión y pertenencia. La pieza funciona simultáneamente como escultura, obstáculo y dispositivo social: el público no puede atravesarla, sino que debe rodearla, negociar su presencia y adaptarse a sus límites. La experiencia física se transforma así en una poderosa metáfora de las fronteras contemporáneas y de los mecanismos, visibles e invisibles, que condicionan nuestros desplazamientos en el espacio social.

Por su parte, Acquisition Agreement transforma el contrato de adquisición de una obra en la propia obra artística. Delmar continúa explorando el lenguaje jurídico y administrativo no como simple crítica institucional, sino como material estético capaz de revelar las estructuras que condicionan la circulación del arte, el trabajo creativo y la producción de valor. Su práctica demuestra que los sistemas burocráticos no son mecanismos abstractos, sino fuerzas que moldean la experiencia cotidiana y las posibilidades de pertenencia.

También marcado por la experiencia del desplazamiento, el brasileño Rafael D’Aló (Porto Alegre, 1981) presenta dos trabajos recientes: la pintura Notes from a Past Life y la escultura Father Figure. Ambas piezas indagan en la memoria, aunque no desde el recuerdo explícito, sino desde aquello que permanece inscrito en el cuerpo y acompaña al individuo de forma inconsciente.

D’Aló entiende la experiencia artística como un acontecimiento profundamente físico. Para él, incluso en una época dominada por la circulación digital de imágenes, la percepción continúa siendo corporal. Sus pinturas funcionan como espacios de tránsito donde anotaciones, imágenes recolectadas y experiencias acumuladas encuentran nuevas asociaciones. La escultura, realizada en aluminio a partir de vainas vegetales del flamboyánmoldeadas y ensambladas, introduce una presencia casi antropomórfica que confronta al espectador con la materialidad del espacio.

La condición de extranjero atraviesa buena parte de su práctica. Sin embargo, lejos de presentarla como una experiencia de exclusión, D’Aló la entiende como una oportunidad de aprendizaje. Sus obras sugieren que habitar el mundo desde el desplazamiento implica desarrollar nuevas formas de atención, apertura y escucha. En ese sentido, la memoria aparece menos como una reconstrucción del pasado que como un territorio de encuentros posibles.

La relación entre naturaleza, conocimiento y transformación ocupa el centro de la propuesta de Lucia Pizzani (Caracas, 1975), una de las voces más sólidas de la diáspora venezolana en el Reino Unido. Para Paraíso presenta un conjunto de esculturas de cerámicas y obras sobre papel que surgen de investigaciones desarrolladas entre México, Brasil y Europa, confirmando una práctica que entiende el mundo natural como un archivo vivo de saberes, desplazamientos e historias compartidas.

Las piezas que exhibe forman parte de proyectos que exploran la inteligencia vegetal, los sistemas ecológicos y las formas de comunicación presentes en el mundo natural. A través de formas antropomórficas, semillas, vainas, huellas de plantas y fósiles, Pizzani busca acercar al espectador a formas de vida que suelen ser percibidas como pasivas, subrayando la capacidad de las plantas para comunicarse, cooperar y sostener complejas redes de interdependencia. Arcillas inglesas reciben la impronta de maíces mexicanos o incorporan elementos recolectados en la Mata Atlántica brasileña, creando objetos donde la memoria geográfica y cultural se sedimenta en múltiples capas.

Pizzani trabaja en la intersección entre arte, ciencia y saberes ancestrales. Más que ilustrar conceptos ecológicos, sus obras buscan otorgar agencia a las plantas y cuestionar las jerarquías que sitúan al ser humano en el centro de la experiencia del mundo. En un momento marcado por la crisis climática, su producción propone una mirada capaz de conectar tiempos geológicos, procesos evolutivos y dinámicas migratorias. La naturaleza deja de ser un telón de fondo para convertirse en un sujeto activo dentro del relato.

Mientras tanto, el boliviano River Claure (Cochabamba, 1997) presenta una fotografía perteneciente a la serie con la que reinterpretó El principito desde los paisajes andinos.

Aunque se trata de uno de sus primeros proyectos, la obra ya anticipa preocupaciones que continúan presentes en su producción: la construcción de identidad, las formas de representación y la relación entre memoria personal e imaginario colectivo. Claure parte de la fotografía, pero sus imágenes nacen previamente en dibujos y guiones visuales. El resultado no es documental en sentido estricto. El artista describe sus trabajos como escenarios dirigidos donde personajes, paisajes y símbolos interactúan para cuestionar las expectativas que suelen proyectarse sobre el mundo andino. Flores, vestimentas tradicionales y referencias literarias aparecen desplazadas de su contexto habitual para generar nuevas lecturas sobre la historia y la contemporaneidad de Bolivia.

Más recientemente, su reflexión se ha orientado hacia las implicaciones éticas de representar comunidades de pueblos originarios y territorios históricamente situados en los márgenes de los relatos dominantes. Esa preocupación no lo ha llevado a abandonar una visión onírica, sino a examinar con mayor profundidad las relaciones de poder involucradas en toda imagen. Entre el juego, la puesta en escena y la crítica cultural, Claure construye una obra que cuestiona tanto los estereotipos heredados como las formas tradicionales de mirar el paisaje.

En conjunto, las propuestas reunidas en Paraíso evidencian una transformación significativa dentro del arte latinoamericano contemporáneo. Ya no se trata de representar identidades nacionales ni de reivindicar discursos regionales cerrados. Lo que emerge es una constelación de investigaciones donde la memoria dialoga con la migración, la ecología con la historia y la experiencia individual con estructuras globales de poder.

Desde el conuco de Jaime Gili hasta los sistemas burocráticos de Débora Delmar; desde las memorias corporales de Rafael D’Aló hasta las inteligencias vegetales de Lucia Pizzani y los imaginarios andinos de River Claure, Paraíso Art Fair se presenta como un espacio donde América Latina deja de ser una geografía fija para convertirse en un territorio de traducciones, intercambios y reinvenciones constantes. En Londres, esa condición híbrida encuentra un escenario especialmente pertinente: una ciudad que, como las obras reunidas en la feria, también está hecha de desplazamientos, encuentros y memorias superpuestas.

CRISIS presents a solo booth by Peruvian artist Andrea Canepa.

The presentation brings together kinetic sculptures and mosaics that draw on the zumbayllu, the humming spinning top that appears in José María Arguedas’s Los ríos profundos. Canepa connects this image to ideas of cultural continuity and resistance, looking at how rhythm and repetition can transmit memory across generations.

Cecilia Brunson Projects presents Jun Martínez, Silät and Dignora Pastorello

Cecilia Brunson Projects brings together Puerto Rican artist Jun Martínez, Argentine collective Silät and historic works by Argentine painter Dignora Pastorello.

Martínez’s paintings move between landscape and abstraction, drawing on the natural environment of Puerto Rico and its colonial histories. Silät, a collective of more than 100 Wichí women weavers from northern Argentina, works with hand-spun chaguar fibre, using ancestral weaving techniques to address community and Indigenous resistance.

Pastorello, meanwhile, focuses on everyday surroundings: interiors, streets, balconies, animals and domestic spaces, transforming familiar scenes into psychologically charged images.

Bolanle Contemporary presents Eilen Itzel do Espírito Santo

Bolanle Contemporary presents Eilen Itzel do Espírito Santo as part of Frieze’s Artist-to-Artist initiative.

The Afro-Dominican American artist works across painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and installation, drawing on memories of the Dominican Republic, the African Diaspora and Latin America. Her use of colour is closely tied to childhood memories of brightly painted homes, while spirituality also runs through the work, particularly through references to Ifá, the Yoruba divination and spiritual tradition, alongside ideas of ancestry and transformation.

LLANO presents Giovanni Fabián Guerrero

LLANO presents a solo booth by Mexican artist Giovanni Fabián Guerrero, a Purépecha artist from Cherán, Michoacán.

His work draws closely from the collective memory and political history of his community, where spirituality and resistance are deeply connected. Since 2011, Cherán has organised to defend its forests against illegal logging and violence, and that experience runs through Guerrero’s visual language.

LAMB presents Jim Amaral

At Frieze Masters, LAMB presents Jim Amaral, a California-born artist who has lived and worked in Bogotá since the 1950s.

The booth centres on Amaral’s Invisible Flowers works from 1979–80, in which botanical forms merge with fragments of human anatomy. The works reflect his longstanding engagement with Surrealism, psychoanalysis, pre-Columbian, and classical art.

Amaral is also the husband of Colombian textile artist Olga de Amaral. Now in his nineties, he has spent more than seven decades working across drawing, sculpture, painting, etching and assemblage, developing an extraordinarily personal visual language.

Cecilia Brunson Projects presenta a Jun Martínez, Silät y Dignora Pastorello

Cecilia Brunson Projects reúne al artista puertorriqueño Jun Martínez, al colectivo argentino Silät y obras históricas de la pintora argentina Dignora Pastorello.

Las pinturas de Martínez se mueven entre el paisaje y la abstracción, tomando como punto de partida el entorno natural de Puerto Rico y sus historias coloniales. Silät, un colectivo formado por más de 100 mujeres tejedoras Wichí del norte de Argentina, trabaja con fibra de chaguar hilada a mano y emplea técnicas ancestrales de tejido para abordar cuestiones de comunidad y resistencia indígena.

Pastorello, por su parte, se centra en entornos cotidianos: interiores, calles, balcones, animales y espacios domésticos, y transforma escenas familiares en imágenes cargadas de tensión psicológica.

Bolanle Contemporary presenta a Eilen Itzel do Espírito Santo

Bolanle Contemporary presenta a Eilen Itzel do Espírito Santo como parte de la iniciativa Artist-to-Artist de Frieze.

La artista afro-dominicana estadounidense trabaja con pintura, dibujo, grabado, escultura e instalación, recurriendo a recuerdos de República Dominicana y a experiencias vinculadas con la diáspora africana y América Latina. Su uso del color está estrechamente ligado a recuerdos de infancia de casas pintadas en tonos intensos, mientras que la espiritualidad también atraviesa su obra, especialmente a través de referencias a Ifá, la tradición yoruba de adivinación y espiritualidad, junto con ideas de ancestralidad y transformación.

LLANO presenta a Giovanni Fabián Guerrero

LLANO presenta un stand individual del artista mexicano Giovanni Fabián Guerrero, artista purépecha originario de Cherán, Michoacán.

Su obra parte de la memoria colectiva y de la historia política de su comunidad, donde la espiritualidad y la resistencia están profundamente conectadas. Desde 2011, Cherán se ha organizado para defender sus bosques frente a la tala ilegal y la violencia, una experiencia que atraviesa el lenguaje visual de Guerrero.

LAMB presenta a Jim Amaral

En Frieze Masters, LAMB presenta a Jim Amaral, artista nacido en California que vive y trabaja en Bogotá desde la década de 1950.

El stand se centra en las obras de su serie Invisible Flowers, realizadas entre 1979 y 1980, en las que formas botánicas se fusionan con fragmentos de anatomía humana. Las obras reflejan su prolongado interés por el surrealismo, el psicoanálisis, el arte precolombino y el arte clásico.

Flavio Garciandía at Espace Brownstone in collaboration with Galerie Mai 36

This edition of On View takes us to Paris, where Espace Brownstone, in collaboration with Galerie Mai 36, presents Breton at the Frontier, Flavio Garciandía’s first solo exhibition in the city.

Bringing together works from the past three decades, the exhibition offers an overview of the practice of one of Cuba’s most influential living artists and a central figure in the development of Latin American conceptual painting.

The exhibition takes its title from a recurring device in Garciandía’s work: inventing titles around events that never took place. Across his practice, he has imagined encounters and gestures involving artists such as Brice Marden, Barnett Newman, John Baldessari and Yves Klein. Drawing on Marcel Duchamp’s understanding of the title as an essential part of the artwork, Garciandía uses these fictional narratives to open an ironic space between Latin American culture and the history of Western art.

A key figure of the Cuban avant-garde of the 1980s, Garciandía emerged from a generation seeking alternatives to socialist realism while also developing a critical position towards dominant Western artistic models. That tension remains central to his work, where art history and cultural reference become material for irony and reinterpretation.

Breton at the Frontier is open until November 14 at Espace Brownstone, 26 rue Saint-Gilles, Paris.

Esta edición de On View nos lleva a París, donde Espace Brownstone, en colaboración con Galerie Mai 36, presenta Breton en la frontera, la primera exposición individual de Flavio Garciandía en la ciudad.

Reuniendo obras de las últimas tres décadas, la exposición ofrece una mirada a la práctica de uno de los artistas cubanos vivos más influyentes y una figura central en el desarrollo de la pintura conceptual latinoamericana.

La exposición toma su título de un recurso recurrente en la obra de Garciandía: inventar títulos en torno a acontecimientos que nunca sucedieron. A lo largo de su práctica, ha imaginado encuentros y gestos protagonizados por artistas como Brice Marden, Barnett Newman, John Baldessari e Yves Klein. Retomando la idea de Marcel Duchamp de que el título es un componente esencial de la obra, Garciandía utiliza estas narrativas ficticias para abrir un espacio irónico entre la cultura latinoamericana y la historia del arte occidental.

Figura clave de la vanguardia cubana de los años ochenta, Garciandía formó parte de una generación que buscaba alternativas al realismo socialista y que, al mismo tiempo, desarrollaba una posición crítica frente a los modelos artísticos dominantes de Occidente. Meet the Selection Panel

Jean-Hubert Martin is a French art historian, curator, and former Director of the Musée national d’art moderne at the Centre Pompidou.

A major figure in international contemporary art, he is best known for curating the landmark 1989 exhibition Magiciens de la Terre, which challenged the Western-centric frameworks through which contemporary art was traditionally presented. He has also directed the Kunsthalle Bern, the Musée national des Arts d’Afrique et d’Océanie in Paris, and the Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf, and continues to work internationally as an independent curator.

Alfred Pacquement is a French curator and former Director of the Musée national d’art moderne at the Centre Pompidou.

A major figure in France’s modern and contemporary art institutions, he has also served as Director of the Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume and the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Throughout his career, he has curated and supported significant exhibitions dedicated to leading figures of 20th- and 21st-century art.

Katherinne Fiedler is a Peruvian visual artist based in Madrid whose multidisciplinary practice explores relationships between organic matter, landscape, processed materials, and the social and ecological systems that connect them. Her work has been presented internationally at institutions including the Museum of Contemporary Art of Lima, MAMBO in Bogotá, MAAT in Lisbon, and CaixaForum in Madrid.

Together with representatives from Espace Brownstone and Art in Latin America, they will review the applications and select the artist who will participate in the residency.

When we first spoke with Miguel Braceli, much of our conversation revolved around the ways art can operate as a space for learning and exchange. Those ideas sit at the core of LA ESCUELA___, the artist-led platform he founded to develop experimental forms of education across Latin America, the Caribbean, and their diasporas. Bringing together artists, educators, researchers, and communities, LA ESCUELA___ has grown through artistic research and collaboration rather than through a conventional institutional model.

This October, the platform enters a new chapter with the creation of La Escuela, Inc., a New York-based nonprofit organisation, and a benefit auction at Sotheby’s New York that will support its continued development.

The creation of La Escuela, Inc. marks a more formal phase in the platform’s growth, opening new possibilities for fundraising, institutional partnerships, and longer-term support. That shift is already taking shape through a series of collaborations in the United States. These include Education as Resistance at MoMA PS1, accompanied by the virtual symposium Redes as Resistance, which brought together artists and cultural institutions across the Americas, as well as LA ESCUELA___’s participation in the National Academy of Design’s Future Schools programme. Together, these projects point to a broader effort to build sustained institutional relationships while keeping artistic and educational exchange at the centre of the platform’s work.

The Sotheby’s benefit auction forms part of this new chapter for LA ESCUELA___, opening another avenue of support to sustain and expand its programmes. The works will be offered through Contemporary Discoveries auction, open for online bidding from October 1 to 8, 2026. The selection draws from artists whose practices have intersected with LA ESCUELA___’s ecosystem, reflecting the relationships that have shaped the platform since its beginning.

Participating artists include Luis Camnitzer, Rufino Tamayo, Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe, Miguel Braceli, Simón Vega, Seba Calfuqueo, Lizania Cruz, Marilyn Boror Bor, Diana López, John Rivas, Esvin Alarcón Lam, Constanza Alarcón Tennen, Dulce Gómez, and Luis Romero.

The Sotheby’s sale is one of the first visible expressions of this new institutional phase, linking the platform’s pedagogical mission to a broader network of collectors and market structures. The initiative has been made possible through donations and support from the participating artists and galleries, including Alexander Gray Associates, W Galería, Proxyco, Sorondo Projects, Henrique Faría, Abra, Kate-Ferri Projects, and Nina Johnson Gallery. The Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros has also contributed a work to the initiative.

Highlights from the benefit auction will be exhibited at Sotheby’s New York from October 2 to 7 at The Breuer, 945 Madison Avenue. Contemporary Discoveries is open for online bidding through October 8, 2026.

This October, Antesala opens in London, a new permanent exhibition space and curatorial platform dedicated to Latin American artists.

Founded by Brazilian collector and patron Flavia Nespatti, together with art historian and advisor Laura González as Senior Director, the project will occupy a space in Fitzrovia from which it will develop exhibitions in collaboration with artists and galleries, alongside advisory work and public programming. Its programme will include four to five exhibitions a year, with a clear intention: to foster sustained exchange between London’s art scene and the different voices shaping art from the region.

In conversation with Art in Latin America, we spoke about how Antesala came into being, why they chose to move away from the traditional gallery model, the role collecting plays within the project, and what it means to build a Latin American space in London without turning it into a niche.

How did Antesala come about, and what led you to develop the project together?

LG: Flavia and I both studied at The Courtauld and completed the same master’s programme, although four years apart. Our first connection was a professor there who suggested that we should meet. Some time passed, and we realised we had several friends in common. We eventually met at ARCO in Madrid.

From there, we became friends and, over the years, the conversation continued to grow. Last year, we felt it was the right moment to do something together.

FN: I was also following Laura professionally. She has a very interesting career and an excellent reputation as an art advisor.

From my side, I had been thinking for many years about creating a project in London connected to Latin America, but I could never quite find the right format. At one point Laura came to my house, and I felt she was the perfect person to develop it with.

What began as the idea of a physical space became something much more complex. We have spent more than a year thinking about what Antesala could be and how we wanted it to function.

LG: The physical space was always fundamental. We wanted a place in London from which we could complicate the perspective of what Latin American art is, what it means to be from Latin America, and the different ways of relating to the region.

From the beginning, it was also a very collaborative idea: a space where many different people could come together and where there would be more freedom to experiment. We wanted to be able to offer a different kind of opportunity.

What led you to embrace a hybrid model for Antesala?

LG: We wanted to reduce barriers to entry so that a wider range of galleries and artists could exhibit, gain visibility, and build connections in London.

The hybrid aspect developed quite organically. We are very aware of what is happening in the art market at the moment, not only in Latin America. Many models are under enormous pressure, and starting a gallery today within the traditional format is extremely difficult.

That does not mean that model is not important. Quite the opposite. But for it to continue functioning, new structures also need to emerge around it.

FN: Our model is designed to support galleries. We understand that galleries need to continue to exist, and that commercial support for artists is essential.

We did not want to become just another gallery, but rather to create something that could work with those that already exist and expand on what they do.

There is also our public programme, which is very important to us, both from an educational and intellectual perspective. And there is the patronage side, which I have been involved with personally for a long time and which, for me, fits very naturally within the project.

Flavia, how has your experience as a collector influenced the way you think about exhibitions and, at the same time, supporting artists?

FN: My collection is very personal. For me, it is very important to understand an artist’s trajectory, but also their practice. Having a space now where we can present that and support more artists feels like a natural next step.

And I think Antesala — even the name has something to do with this — is about being able to share those dialogues, to open doors. To give a wider group of people access to all of those experiences I have had with artists, galleries, and curators.

I have had incredible experiences that have changed my life. Perhaps this project is a continuation of that. A form of support.

Public programming is an important part of the project. What kind of audience do you hope to reach beyond the usual art-world circuit?

LG: A bit of everything, really. Over the summer we held a few small, very informal previews to start bringing people into the space, and there was a real mix: collectors, artists, professors, journalists, curators, children.

The programme also allows us to engage with a more academic audience that is not necessarily connected to the commercial sphere. We want to collaborate with many different people. There will be conversations between artists, curators, and thinkers around very specific subjects. I am very interested in that specificity: in a conversation really being about something.

FN: At the same time, we want the approach to remain quite open. Not everything has to be connected to a Latin American artist or a Latin American subject. It can be specific, but also expansive.

We do not want to create a divisive niche. We want people to come because they are curious. The unexpected is also important: that someone comes back because they do not know exactly what they are going to find. That is also where the idea of playing with expectations around what Latin American art is supposed to be when it is presented outside Latin America comes in.

What would you like Antesala to show those encountering artists from the region for the first time?

LG: I think we are interested in questioning the idea that Latin American art can be understood through overly neat narratives or closed categories. For someone who is only beginning to engage with the region, one of the biggest surprises may be precisely its conceptual diversity.

How do you imagine Antesala evolving over the next five years? What would success mean to you?

LG: For me, success would be longevity.

FN: Yes, being able to sustain the project over time, both financially and in terms of the programme. If, in five years, we can continue developing something ambitious and complex while also achieving a real cultural impact, that would be a major success. We want institutions and curators to find in Antesala a place where they can discover artists, ideas, and practices that they might not encounter otherwise.

LG: And I think London is the right place to develop something like this. There is a real sense of curiosity, not only in the city but across England more broadly. From the beginning, we asked ourselves: is London the best place for us? And I think it has proved to be the right one.

Antesala está construyendo un nuevo espacio para el arte de América Latina en Londres

Este octubre abre en Londres Antesala, un nuevo espacio permanente de exposiciones y plataforma curatorial dedicado a artistas de América Latina.

Fundado por la coleccionista y patrona brasileña Flavia Nespatti, con la historiadora del arte y asesora Laura González como directora, el proyecto ocupará un espacio en Fitzrovia desde el que desarrollará exposiciones en colaboración con artistas y galerías, además de asesoría y programación pública. Su programa contempla entre cuatro y cinco exposiciones al año con una voluntad clara: generar un intercambio sostenido entre la escena londinense y las distintas voces que conforman el arte de la región.

En conversación con Art in Latin America, hablamos sobre cómo nació Antesala, por qué decidieron alejarse del modelo tradicional de galería, el papel que ocupa el coleccionismo dentro del proyecto y qué significa construir un espacio latinoamericano en Londres sin convertirlo en un nicho.

¿Cómo surgió Antesala y qué las llevó a desarrollar el proyecto juntas?

LG: Flavia y yo estudiamos en The Courtauld e hicimos el mismo programa de maestría, aunque con cuatro años de diferencia. Nuestra primera conexión fue una profesora de ahí, que sugirió que deberíamos conocernos. Pasó un tiempo y descubrimos que teníamos varios amigos en común. Al final nos conocimos en ARCO, en Madrid.

A partir de ahí nos hicimos amigas y, con los años, la conversación fue creciendo. El año pasado sentimos que era el momento de hacer algo juntas.

FN: Yo también seguía a Laura profesionalmente. Tiene una carrera muy interesante y una muy buena reputación como consultora de arte.

Por mi parte, llevaba muchos años pensando que quería hacer un proyecto en Londres relacionado con Latinoamérica, pero no encontraba el formato adecuado. En un momento Laura vino a mi casa y sentí que era la persona perfecta para desarrollarlo conmigo.

Lo que empezó como la idea de un espacio físico se volvió algo mucho más complejo. Llevamos más de un año pensando qué podía ser Antesala y cómo queríamos que funcionara.

LG: El espacio físico siempre fue fundamental. Queríamos un lugar en Londres desde el que pudiéramos complicar la perspectiva de lo que es arte latinoamericano, de lo que significa ser de Latinoamérica y de las distintas formas de relacionarse con la región.

Desde el principio también fue una idea muy colaborativa: un espacio donde pudiera venir mucha gente y donde hubiera más libertad para experimentar. Queríamos poder ofrecer otro tipo de oportunidad.

¿Qué las llevó a apostar por un modelo híbrido para Antesala?

LG: Queríamos reducir las barreras de entrada para que más tipos de galerías y artistas pudieran exhibir, darse a conocer y desarrollar conexiones en Londres.

La parte híbrida surgió de forma bastante orgánica. Somos muy conscientes de lo que está pasando actualmente en el mercado del arte, no solo en Latinoamérica. Muchos modelos están bajo una presión enorme y empezar hoy una galería siguiendo el formato tradicional es muy difícil.

Eso no quiere decir que ese modelo no sea importante. Todo lo contrario. Pero para que continúe funcionando también tienen que aparecer nuevas estructuras alrededor.

FN: Nuestro modelo está pensado para apoyar a las galerías. Entendemos que la galería tiene que seguir existiendo y que el apoyo comercial al artista es esencial.

No queríamos convertirnos en una galería más, sino crear algo que pudiera trabajar con las que ya existen y ampliar lo que hacen.

También está nuestro programa público, que para nosotras es muy importante, tanto desde un punto de vista educativo como intelectual. Y está la parte del patronazgo, que llevo haciendo personalmente desde hace mucho tiempo y que para mí encaja de manera natural con el proyecto.

Flavia, ¿cómo ha influido tu experiencia como coleccionista en la manera en que piensas las exposiciones y, al mismo tiempo, el apoyo a los artistas?

FN: Mi colección es muy personal. Para mí es muy importante entender la trayectoria de un artista, pero también su práctica. Tener ahora un espacio donde podamos mostrar eso y apoyar a más artistas me parece un paso natural.

Y creo que Antesala —incluso el nombre tiene algo que ver con esto— consiste en poder compartir esos diálogos, en abrir puertas. Dar acceso a un grupo más grande de personas a todas esas experiencias que yo he tenido con artistas, galerías y también curadores.

He tenido experiencias increíbles que me han cambiado la vida. Quizás este proyecto es una continuación de eso. Una forma de apoyo.

La programación pública es una parte importante del proyecto. ¿A qué tipo de público quieren llegar más allá del circuito habitual del arte?

LG: Un poco de todo, verdaderamente. En verano hicimos unos previews pequeños y muy casuales para empezar a traer gente al espacio y había de todo: coleccionistas, artistas, profesores, periodistas, curadores, niños.

El programa nos permite también acercarnos a un público más académico, que no esté necesariamente vinculado al ámbito comercial. Queremos colaborar con mucha gente. Habrá conversaciones entre artistas, curadores y pensadores alrededor de temas muy específicos. A mí me interesa mucho esa especificidad: que una conversación sea realmente sobre algo.

FN: Pero al mismo tiempo queremos que el enfoque sea bastante abierto. No todo tiene que estar relacionado con un artista latinoamericano o con un tema latinoamericano. Puede ser específico pero también expansivo.

No queremos crear un nicho divisivo. Queremos que la gente venga porque tiene curiosidad. Lo inesperado también es importante. Que vuelva porque no sabe exactamente qué va a encontrar. Ahí también entra esta idea de jugar con las expectativas sobre qué debería ser el arte latinoamericano cuando se presenta fuera de Latinoamérica.

¿Qué les gustaría que Antesala revelara a quienes se acercan por primera vez a artistas de la región?

LG: Creo que nos interesa cuestionar la idea de que el arte latinoamericano puede entenderse a través de narrativas demasiado claras o categorías cerradas. Para alguien que recién empieza a acercarse a la región, una de las mayores sorpresas puede ser justamente su diversidad conceptual.

¿Cómo imaginan la evolución de Antesala en los próximos cinco años? ¿Qué significaría el éxito para ustedes?

LG: Para mí, el éxito estaría en la sostenibilidad.

FN: Sí, en poder mantener el proyecto en el tiempo, tanto financieramente como a nivel de programa. Si dentro de cinco años podemos seguir desarrollando una propuesta ambiciosa y compleja, y al mismo tiempo lograr un impacto cultural real, eso sería un gran éxito. Nos interesa que las instituciones y los curadores encuentren en Antesala un lugar donde descubrir artistas, ideas y prácticas que quizás no encontrarían de otra manera.

LG: Y creo que Londres es el lugar adecuado para desarrollar algo así. Hay una curiosidad muy presente, no solo en la ciudad sino en Inglaterra en general. Desde el inicio nos preguntamos: ¿es Londres el contexto correcto? Y creo que, en ese sentido, es el sitio ideal.

Irene Gelfman is the Global Curator and Artistic Director of Pinta Art Fair. During her tenure, Pinta has expanded its presence into different cities and art scenes, while developing a programme that extends beyond the traditional art fair format.

In this conversation, we speak with Irene about the evolution of contemporary art in Latin America, the limits of the category “Latin American art,” her curatorial approach, and what lies ahead for Pinta, from BAphoto to the 20th anniversary of Pinta Miami.

After so many years exploring art scenes across different countries in Latin America, what changes do you think have most profoundly transformed the contemporary art landscape in the region?

IG: There has been a decentralization that I think is important to highlight. For years, the Global South has been shaping the cultural agenda of biennials, museums, and fairs. The axis no longer revolves around just two or three global capitals. Today, there are circuits that were once considered “peripheral” whose artistic production is gaining increasing recognition and visibility in major exhibitions.

Under my artistic direction and global curatorship, Pinta expanded from being present in three countries to six. We also began exploring Art Weeks in vibrant art scenes that may not yet have the ecosystem needed to support a fair, but that do have artists, institutions, thinkers, and others who have been working there for a very long time. There is a growing interest in discovering and engaging with these scenes. We have already held two very successful editions in Panama, four in Asunción, and we are now expanding to Medellín.

Another initiative I think is particularly worth highlighting is our Open Files, a series of videos in which Latin American artists speak about their work in their own words. More than 110 artists from 13 countries have participated so far, and notably, 54% are women. This initiative seeks to broaden and democratize access to art from Latin America. The videos are freely accessible and constitute a living archive that continues to grow.

Is the category “Latin American art” still useful?

IG: I think it is useful from the outside and limiting from within: it can serve as an entry point for external audiences, but it flattens the real differences between art scenes. There is a risk with that label: “Latin American” can become an aesthetic expectation—the political, the identity-based—that confines the artist. I prefer to speak of art from Latin America, as Gerardo Mosquera proposes, rather than “Latin American art.” That label is often imposed from the outside and carries an expectation that works should display a recognizable form of “Latin Americanness”—the political, the telluric, the exotic—ultimately confining artists within those expectations. Thinking about art from the region does not impose a style or subject; it points instead to a place from which one looks and creates. It shifts the focus: what matters is no longer the origin of the work, but the perspective of the person making it, with the freedom to engage with the world without having to represent where they come from.

At Pinta’s fairs, I created and organized sections such as NEXT, RADAR, FORO, Editorial, Special Projects, and Artista Homenaje, among others, which function precisely as ways of engaging with specificities rather than thinking of the region as a single, homogeneous bloc.

Is there a particular art scene, country, or generation of artists that has recently surprised you and that you believe deserves greater international attention?

IG: These four years overseeing the artistic direction have allowed me to discover not only scenes I was unfamiliar with, but also artists, cultural practitioners, and creators. At Pinta Asunción, I had the opportunity to get to know the work of Julia Isidrez and Claudia Casarino firsthand, and to work alongside Ticio Escobar and Adriana Almada. It is a scene that is completely different from the rest of the Southern Cone, and I think it deserves closer attention.

Panama, meanwhile, was also very enriching for me. I had the opportunity to work alongside Lulu Lobos, Milko Delgado, and Donna Conlon, artists whom I consider fundamental to the Central American art scene. Lima is undoubtedly an extraordinarily diverse and interesting scene. Although I was already familiar with most of the artists before my work at Pinta, my role gave me the opportunity to work with artists such as Claudia Coca, Martinat, Fernando Bryce, Alberto Casiari, Elena Damiani, Fátima Rodrigo, Elena Tejada Herrera, and others.

Pinta has a very distinctive curatorial identity, with the selection of galleries and the different sections creating a clear dialogue with one another. How do you build that coherence without limiting the diversity of the proposals?

IG: Over these four years, one of my goals has been to ensure that not only the individual events have a certain balance and coherence, but, above all, that Pinta’s annual program and all of its initiatives do as well.

I want it to be understood as a complete program that brings together the fairs, the Art Weeks, the partnerships we develop with Fundación Pinta, and our editorial platform, Arte al Día.

For me, coherence functions as a structure, not as uniformity. I wanted the sections to provide a framework: one focused on younger and emerging practices, others organized around themes explored through artists’ work, all coexisting with the main section. Each has its own framework, while still allowing the proposals to breathe and enter into dialogue with one another.

The dialogue between sections is fundamental. There is a relationship between them; I think of them as systems rather than compartments.

I also work with a great curatorial team with whom I am in constant dialogue. They are curators working at key institutions across the region, transforming their respective scenes from within and bringing their research processes and networks to the fairs. Coherence emerges from a conversation among curators, rather than from something imposed from above. A diversity of voices is part of the method.

I also think it is important to highlight that FORO brought together more than 100 voices between 2023 and 2026, which speaks to the diversity of perspectives we seek to bring into conversation. Coherence can coexist with scale.

In a context in which many art fairs compete to grow in size and number of galleries, Pinta seems to favor a smaller selection and to place content at the center. Has prioritizing curatorial quality over quantitative growth been a conscious decision?

IG: Yes, it has been a conscious decision. I believe this approach strengthens identity, the visitor experience, and the relationship with the public, while allowing us to prioritize each individual project rather than simply focusing on quantity.

Curated content is at the heart of Pinta. We think of the fair as a space for interpretation, not only for transactions. That is why we have special projects, Artista Homenaje, and other sections that are like “gifts” for visitors. Our focus is not simply on creating more spaces to add galleries and generate sales. We think about and create projects that complement all the work we are already doing.

At the same time, growth and quality are not necessarily opposed. Pinta has grown in terms of the number of programs and events we are producing. The key is choosing where and how to grow.

When you evaluate a gallery for Pinta, what makes a project stand out? Beyond the quality of the works themselves, what do you look for in a gallery’s proposal?

IG: Several things. First, the gallery’s artistic proposal as an argument in itself. I look for coherence between what the gallery says and what it brings. Long-term work is very important. Supporting galleries and maintaining their place within the fair is fundamental. I always ask myself what that gallery adds to the conversation of the fair.

Pinta continues to expand its presence through different fairs and programs. Looking ahead to Pinta BAphoto and Pinta Miami, what are you particularly excited about, and what curatorial conversations would you like to bring to the forefront?

IG: There are several things that excite me about Pinta BAphoto. First, this edition coincides with the 200th anniversary of the birth of photography, and I think it offers a very interesting opportunity to consider what has happened to the medium over that time, how it has transformed, and how it now coexists with other languages, formats, and forms of circulation. This comes through in different parts of the fair—not only in the works themselves, but also in the special projects, the curated sections, and FORO.

We will also be welcoming some very important international guests from the field of photography. Eve Schillo, Associate Curator in the Department of Photography at LACMA; María Santoyo, Director of PHotoESPAÑA; and Thyago Nogueira, Director of the Department of Contemporary Art and Photography at Instituto Moreira Salles and founding editor of ZUM, will all be joining us. For me, it is very valuable to have them in Buenos Aires and participating in FORO, because it allows us to bring what is happening in the region into dialogue with institutions and art scenes elsewhere.

This year, Pinta BAphoto also opens a very special season for the visual arts in Buenos Aires. Just a few days later come Central AFFAIR and arteBA, and I think this concentration creates something very interesting for the city. They are distinct fairs, each with its own identity and audience, but together they create a moment of intense circulation among artists, galleries, collectors, curators, and professionals arriving from different places.

And then there is Pinta Miami, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. For me, it is a special edition because it gives us an opportunity to look back at the fair’s trajectory while also thinking about how to continue growing without losing its identity. Pinta Miami has a boutique scale and a highly curated approach, where each project has the space to be seen and where we seek to create a close encounter between galleries, artists, collectors, curators, and institutions. After 20 years, I am interested in continuing to deepen the fair’s place within Miami Art Week and its relationship with the different art scenes across Latin America.

Después de tantos años recorriendo escenas artísticas en distintos países de América Latina, ¿qué cambios consideras que han transformado más profundamente el panorama del arte contemporáneo en la región?

IG: Hay una descentralización que me parece importante resaltar. El sur global hace años viene marcando la agenda cultural de bienales, museos y ferias. El eje ya no pasa solo por dos o tres capitales mundiales. Hoy hay circuitos que antes eran considerados “periféricos” y cuyas producciones tienen cada vez más reconocimiento y presencia en grandes exhibiciones.

Bajo mi dirección artística y curaduría global, Pinta pasó de estar en tres países a estar en seis. También empezamos a explorar los Art Weeks en escenas efervescentes, que no tienen aún el ecosistema preparado para una feria, pero sí cuentan con artistas, instituciones, pensadores y demás que vienen trabajando hace muchísimo tiempo. Hay un gran interés, cada vez mayor, por conocer y acercarse a esas escenas. Ya van dos ediciones muy exitosas en Panamá, cuatro en Asunción y estamos expandiéndonos a Medellín.

Otra acción que me parece muy interesante destacar son nuestros Open Files, una serie de videos donde artistas latinoamericanos hablan de su obra en primera persona. Ya participaron más de 110 artistas, 13 países y un dato no menor es que el 54 % son mujeres. Esta acción busca difundir y democratizar el acceso al arte de América Latina. Estos videos son libres y gratuitos y constituyen un archivo vivo en constante crecimiento.

¿Sigue siendo útil la categoría “arte latinoamericano”?

IG: Creo que es útil hacia afuera y limitante hacia adentro: sirve como puerta de entrada para públicos externos, pero aplana diferencias reales entre escenas. Hay un riesgo con ese rótulo: cuando “latinoamericano” se vuelve una expectativa estética (lo político, lo identitario) que encasilla al artista. Prefiero hablar de arte desde América Latina, como propone Gerardo Mosquera, más que de “arte latinoamericano”. Esa etiqueta suele venir impuesta desde afuera y espera que las obras muestren cierta “latinoamericanidad” reconocible —lo político, lo telúrico, lo exótico—, y termina encerrando a los artistas en esa expectativa. Pensarlo desde la región no impone un estilo ni un tema: señala un lugar desde donde uno mira y crea. Corre el foco: lo importante deja de ser el origen de la obra y pasa a ser la mirada del que la hace, con libertad para dialogar con el mundo sin tener que representar de dónde viene.

En las ferias de Pinta, creé y organicé secciones como NEXT, RADAR, FORO, Editorial, Special Projects, Artista Homenaje, entre otras, que funcionan justamente como formas de leer particularidades en lugar de pensar la región como un bloque único.

¿Hay alguna escena, país o generación de artistas que recientemente te haya sorprendido y que creas que merece mayor atención internacional?

IG: Estos 4 años a cargo de la dirección artística me permitieron conocer no solo escenas que desconocía, sino también artistas, gestores y creadores. En Pinta Asunción tuve la oportunidad de conocer de primera mano a Julia Isidrez, a Claudia Casarino, de trabajar junto a Ticio Escobar y Adriana Almada. Es una escena totalmente diferente al resto del Cono Sur y creo que merece la pena detenerse en ella.

Por otro lado, Panamá también fue muy enriquecedor para mí. Tuve la oportunidad de trabajar junto a Lulu Lobos, Milko Delgado y Donna Conlon, artistas que creo fundamentales en la escena centroamericana. Sin dudas, Lima es una escena de lo más diversa e interesante. Si bien conocía a la mayoría de los artistas previo a mi trabajo en Pinta, a partir de mi rol pude trabajar con artistas como Claudia Coca, Martinat, Fernando Bryce, Alberto Casiari, Elena Damiani, Fátima Rodrigo, Elena Tejada Herrera y más.

En Pinta se percibe una identidad curatorial muy marcada, donde la selección de galerías y las distintas secciones generan un diálogo claro entre sí. ¿Cómo construyes esa coherencia sin limitar la diversidad de propuestas?

IG: En estos 4 años, una de mis metas fue lograr que no solo los eventos individuales se lean con cierto equilibrio y coherencia, sino, por sobre todo, la programación anual de Pinta y todas sus acciones.

Me interesa que se pueda leer como un programa completo, que articula las acciones de la feria, los Art Weeks, las alianzas que realizamos junto a la Fundación Pinta y nuestra línea editorial Arte al Día.

Para mí, la coherencia funciona como estructura, no como uniformidad. Busqué que las secciones den marco: una parte más joven/emergente, otra que sean temáticas puestas en diálogo a través del trabajo de artistas y la convivencia con la sección principal. Cada una tiene su marco, pero deja que las propuestas respiren y dialoguen entre sí.

El diálogo entre secciones es fundamental. Hay una relación entre unas y otras; las pienso como sistemas y no como compartimentos.

Además, trabajo con un gran equipo curatorial con el que estamos en constante diálogo. Curadores que trabajan en instituciones claves en la región, que están transformando la escena desde sus lugares y que traen a las ferias sus procesos de investigación, sus redes. La coherencia surge de una conversación entre curadores, no de una imposición desde arriba. La diversidad de voces es parte del método.

También me parece importante destacar que FORO reunió más de 100 voces entre 2023 y 2026, algo que habla de la diversidad de miradas que buscamos poner en conversación. La coherencia convive con la escala.

En un contexto en el que muchas ferias compiten por crecer en tamaño y número de galerías, Pinta parece apostar por una selección más pequeña y por poner el contenido en el centro. ¿Ha sido una decisión consciente privilegiar la calidad curatorial por encima del crecimiento cuantitativo?

IG: Sí, es una decisión consciente. Considero que de esta forma se gana en identidad, experiencia y relación con el público, y se prioriza cada proyecto que entra más allá de la cantidad.

El contenido curado es el corazón de Pinta. Pensamos en la feria como espacio de lectura, no solo de transacción. Por eso contamos con proyectos especiales, artista homenaje y demás secciones que son como “regalos” para los visitantes. No ponemos solo el acento en espacios para sumar galerías y que se venda. Pensamos y creamos proyectos que acompañen todo el trabajo que estamos realizando.

Sin embargo, crecimiento y calidad no siempre se oponen. Pinta sí creció en la cantidad de programas y eventos que estamos realizando. La clave está en elegir dónde y cómo crecer.

Cuando evalúas una galería para Pinta, ¿qué hace que un proyecto destaque? Más allá de la calidad de las obras, ¿qué buscas en la propuesta de una galería?

IG: Varias cosas. Por un lado, la propuesta artística de la galería como argumento. Busco que haya una coherencia entre lo que la galería dice y lo que trae. El trabajo a largo plazo es muy importante. Acompañar a las galerías y mantener sus plazas es fundamental. Siempre pienso qué suma esa galería a la conversación de la feria.

Pinta continúa expandiendo su presencia a través de distintas ferias y programas. De cara a Pinta BAphoto y Pinta Miami, ¿qué te entusiasma especialmente de lo que viene y qué conversaciones curatoriales te gustaría poner en el centro?

IG: De cara a Pinta BAphoto hay varias cosas que me entusiasman. Por un lado, esta edición coincide con los 200 años del nacimiento de la fotografía, y me parece una oportunidad muy interesante para pensar qué pasó con el medio en todo este tiempo, cómo se transformó y cómo hoy convive con otros lenguajes, soportes y formas de circulación. Eso aparece en distintas partes de la feria, no solo en las obras, sino también en los proyectos especiales, las secciones curatoriales y FORO.

También vamos a recibir invitados internacionales muy importantes para la fotografía. Va a estar Eve Schillo, curadora asociada del departamento de fotografía de LACMA; María Santoyo, directora de PHotoESPAÑA; y Thyago Nogueira, director del departamento de Arte Contemporáneo y Fotografía del Instituto Moreira Salles y editor fundador de ZUM. Para mí, es muy valioso que puedan estar en Buenos Aires y participar de FORO, porque permite poner en diálogo lo que pasa en la región con instituciones y escenas de otros lugares.

Además, este año Pinta BAphoto abre una temporada muy especial para las artes visuales en Buenos Aires. A los pocos días se suceden Central AFFAIR y arteBA, y creo que esta concentración genera algo muy interesante para la ciudad. Son ferias distintas, con identidades y públicos propios, pero juntas construyen un momento de mucha circulación entre artistas, galerías, coleccionistas, curadores y profesionales que llegan desde distintos lugares.

Y después está Pinta Miami, que este año celebra su 20 aniversario. Para mí, es una edición especial porque permite mirar todo el recorrido que hizo la feria y, al mismo tiempo, pensar cómo seguir creciendo sin perder su identidad. Pinta Miami tiene una escala boutique y una propuesta muy curada, donde cada proyecto tiene espacio para ser visto y donde buscamos generar un encuentro cercano entre galerías, artistas, coleccionistas, curadores e instituciones. Después de 20 años, me interesa seguir profundizando ese lugar que tiene la feria dentro de Miami Art Week y su vínculo con las distintas escenas de América Latina.

Pinta BAphoto 2026 se celebrará del 22 al 25 de octubre de 2026 en La Rural, Buenos Aires. Pinta Miami 2026, que marcará el 20.º aniversario de la feria, tendrá lugar del 3 al 6 de diciembre de 2026 en The Hangar, Coconut Grove, Miami.

Paraíso is conceived as a meeting point between different generations of Latin American art. Contemporary practices will appear alongside Modern and Postmodern figures, allowing for connections that extend beyond a single period or movement. Each edition will also turn its attention to a particular country, with Mexico taking centre stage this year.

The inaugural edition brings together 22 galleries and projects. Aninat Art Projects joins from Santiago, while Mexico City is represented by spaces including Acapulco 62, Alvarez Chida and Salón Silicon. From Lima come Vespertzu and La Rebelde, alongside galleries from Buenos Aires, Medellín and Santa Cruz. Several London-based spaces are also taking part, among them Cecilia Brunson Projects and Belmacz.

Beyond the gallery presentations, Paraíso has invited a group of artists to participate independently. Débora Delmar, Alessandra Risi, Emilia González, Sofía Clausse and Malu Laet are among those presenting work outside the traditional gallery booth.

The focus on Mexico introduces a historical thread to the fair. Previously unseen works by Felipe Ehrenberg (1943–2017) will be shown alongside two video works by Pola Weiss (1947–1990), whose experimental approach to video made her a pioneering figure in Mexican art. Elsewhere, curator Juan Canela has organised a programme devoted to contemporary video art from Central America, with participating galleries and projects from Panama, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Costa Rica.

Publishing also has a place within the fair. Paraíso has collaborated with Calaca Press on a presentation of independent Latin American publishers, including Ají Press from the United Kingdom, Felina Press from Colombia, diSONARE from Mexico and Não Desanime! from Chile.

With its first edition, Paraíso brings these different parts of the Latin American art landscape into the same space in London. Rather than limiting itself to the conventional fair format, it creates room for historical work and practices that are often seen in different contexts.

Este octubre, Londres recibe una nueva feria dedicada íntegramente al arte latinoamericano. Paraíso celebrará su primera edición en Ambika P3 del 15 al 18 de octubre de 2026, reuniendo galerías y proyectos independientes de América Latina y Londres, junto con un programa de conversaciones, performance, video y publicaciones.

César López is a Guatemalan artist whose practice explores geography, migration, and identity through sculptures made from industrial materials. His experience as an immigrant in the United States has shaped his work and his interest in displacement and distance.

In this conversation with Art in Latin America, López discusses how his personal history informs his practice, his interest in the Kaqchikel language and Maya culture, and the importance of making art accessible to audiences beyond institutional spaces.

Geography appears constantly in your work: through maps, globes, flags, and, more recently, sculptures. Where does this interest come from?

CL: It comes from my own experience. For me, geography has never been simply something I study through my work; it touches practically every aspect of my life. I come from Guatemala, but my mother, my sister, and I immigrated to the United States in 2001. I didn’t have official documents until 2012.

When you’re Latino in the United States, one of the questions you constantly hear is, “Where are you from?” Everything is determined, in one way or another, by where you were born, where you are, and what papers you have.

When I started making art, it was natural for all of that to enter my practice. There are many artists, both in Latin America and across its diasporas, who explore geography from different perspectives. In my case, it has to do with having crossed a border and understanding that this experience affects every aspect of your life. It’s something you can’t ignore.

In recent years, you’ve increasingly worked with materials such as aluminum and various types of hardware. How did you come to work with these materials?

CL: Again, it has to do with my own experience. My use of these materials comes from thinking about the industrial spaces where people like me have been able to find work. When you don’t have papers in the United States, you often end up working under another name, with a kind of second identity. Much of the work available to people who arrive under those circumstances is in industrial settings.

I worked in places like meat-processing plants, cutting chicken. These are places where everything is made of metal; it feels like you’re inside a giant refrigerator. That was entirely my world at the time, and it’s still the reality for so many people today.

Of course, in the United States, there’s an entire history of Minimalism and industrial sculpture, particularly in New York. But you can also think, for example, of a Latin American artist like Edgar Negret. These kinds of structures and materials appear in different art histories and in different places.

Your sculptures often repeat certain forms. What role does repetition play in your work?

CL: My earlier sculptures stem from my interest in the curvature of the planet. I think of a form in terms of a point A and a point B. We come back again to that question: Where are you from, and where are you now? Someone might say, “I’m from there, but I’m here,” or “I’m going there from here.”

What I’m trying to articulate through repetition is an accumulation of distances. Each segment of these works measures one foot [approximately 30 centimeters]. So, as I produce more sculptures, those measurements begin to accumulate into a real distance.

From the outside, you might simply see a repeated form, but for me, there’s an internal record of distance. I’m interested in the idea that a structure can contain twenty linear feet, then a hundred, then a hundred and fifty. It’s a way of materializing the journey

Would you eventually like to mark a milestone when that accumulated distance reaches a specific measurement?

CL: Yes. I’m working on larger pieces, and I’m waiting for the right opportunity to articulate that idea more explicitly. I’d like to reach a certain point, perhaps a hundred and fifty feet or some other distance, and be able to mark it.

I don’t know if I’ll ever reach a mile. Maybe it’ll take me ten years. But I’m interested in there being a moment when I can say: We’ve reached a mile, or a kilometer.

Beyond these ideas of distance and displacement, what is informing your work at the moment?

CL: An important part of it has to do with Guatemala. Because of my immigration status in the United States, I haven’t been able to leave the country for a very long time. Sometimes I think about the idea of “the golden cage,” as in the song by Los Tigres del Norte: being here but not being able to return.

That’s why I’ve started studying more about the Maya in Guatemala. Before coming to the United States, we lived in a village outside a city. The way my grandparents and the people in those communities live is completely different from the way I live now.

I’m trying to educate myself about Kaqchikel, the language my grandmother speaks, but also about the stories that exist within that language. My mother and her sister speak it with each other, and they recognize that there are stories that only exist or are passed down in particular ways within that language. For me, studying it is a way of accessing another world.

Your work has entered new institutional contexts, through exhibitions and museum acquisitions. Has this changed the way you think about your practice?

CL: Yes, although I think change is normal. If you look at my work from a few years ago, there were more globes, paintings, and flags; then came the sculptures. Directions change.

Entering the museum circuit also means that people start to recognize you for certain types of work. That’s part of becoming a professional artist. Sometimes people approach you because of something specific they already know about your practice.

But I’d like to have more opportunities to speak with artists, gallerists, and curators who have strong connections to Guatemala. I’m in a situation where I can’t travel to the country, so I want to get closer to it, but my access is still limited.

For several years, you also organized projects aimed at increasing the visibility of Latin American artists, particularly through La Onda. How did that project come about?

CL: There’s a significant Latino community in Kansas City, but the institutions, galleries, and discourse surrounding Latino art often don’t reach a very specific level. Everything ends up being too general.

A colleague, Kiki, and I started by asking ourselves how we could create more opportunities for exhibitions featuring artists from Latin America. One of the problems was precisely that generalization: “Here are the Latino artists,” and then everything was reduced to certain moments or images, such as Día de Muertos. It never went any deeper.

We decided to organize exhibitions featuring ten different artists each time. We ended up putting together around ten or twelve shows over three years, one every two or three months. For now, there are no plans to continue the project, but the desire is still there.

Looking ahead, what new questions are you beginning to explore?

CL: I’m interested in better understanding objects from Guatemala and the Maya world, but also how they function when they enter a museum. I’ve been thinking a lot about education: who is responsible for producing knowledge about an object, how that information is used, and who it’s intended for.

Sometimes I read an essay by an art historian and find it incredible, but I also think: How can we communicate these ideas in a way that isn’t intended exclusively for people who already belong to the art world? How can we create an educational program for a different audience? Because the people working in those industrial plants, the people cutting chicken, probably aren’t reading the essay written by a particular curator. I’m interested in thinking about how art and education can reach them, too.

La geografía aparece constantemente en tu trabajo: a través de mapas, globos, banderas y, más recientemente, esculturas. ¿De dónde viene ese interés?

CL: Viene de mi propia experiencia. La geografía, para mí, nunca ha sido solamente algo que estudio a través de mis obras, sino que toca prácticamente todos los aspectos de mi vida. Yo vengo de Guatemala, pero mi mamá, mi hermana y yo emigramos a Estados Unidos en 2001. No tuve documentos oficiales hasta el 2012.

Cuando eres latino en Estados Unidos, una de las preguntas que escuchas constantemente es: “¿De dónde eres?”. Todo está determinado de alguna manera por dónde naciste, dónde estás y qué papeles tienes.

Cuando empecé a hacer arte, fue natural que todo eso entrara en mi práctica. Hay muchos artistas, tanto en América Latina como en sus diásporas, que investigan la geografía desde lugares distintos. En mi caso, tiene que ver con haber cruzado una frontera y con entender que esa experiencia afecta todos los sectores de tu vida. Es algo que no puedes ignorar.

En los últimos años has trabajado cada vez más con materiales como el aluminio y distintos elementos de hardware. ¿Cómo llegaste a esos materiales?

CL: Tiene que ver otra vez con mi experiencia. Mi uso de estos materiales viene de pensar en los espacios industriales donde personas como yo hemos tenido acceso al trabajo. Cuando no tienes papeles en Estados Unidos, muchas veces terminas trabajando con otro nombre, bajo una especie de segunda identidad. Buena parte del trabajo disponible para las personas que llegan en esas condiciones se encuentra en espacios industriales.

Yo trabajé en lugares como fábricas de procesamiento de carne, cortando pollo. Son lugares donde todo está hecho de metal; parece que estás dentro de un refrigerador gigante. Ese era completamente mi mundo en ese momento, y sigue siendo la realidad de muchísima gente hoy en día.

Claro que en Estados Unidos existe toda una historia del minimalismo y de la escultura industrial, particularmente en Nueva York. Pero también puedes pensar, por ejemplo, en un artista latinoamericano como Edgar Negret. Este tipo de estructuras y materiales aparecen en distintas historias del arte y en diferentes lugares.

Tus esculturas suelen repetir determinadas formas. ¿Qué papel juega esa repetición?

CL: Las esculturas más antiguas parten de mi interés por la curvatura del planeta. Pienso una forma como un punto A y un punto B.

Volvemos otra vez a esa pregunta: ¿de dónde eres y dónde estás? Alguien puede decir: “Soy de allá, pero estoy acá”, o “voy para allá desde aquí”.

Lo que intento articular mediante la repetición es una acumulación de distancias. Cada uno de los segmentos de estas obras mide un pie [aproximadamente 30 centímetros]. Entonces, a medida que produzco más esculturas, esas medidas empiezan a acumular una distancia real.

Desde afuera quizá simplemente se ve una forma repetida, pero para mí internamente existe ese registro de distancia. Me interesa pensar que una estructura pueda contener veinte pies lineales, luego cien, luego ciento cincuenta. Es una forma de materializar el recorrido.

¿Te gustaría eventualmente marcar algún hito cuando esa distancia acumulada alcance una medida concreta?

CL: Sí. Estoy trabajando en piezas más grandes y estoy esperando la oportunidad correcta para poder articular esa idea de manera más explícita. Me gustaría llegar a un punto, quizá ciento cincuenta pies o alguna otra distancia, para poder señalarlo.

No sé si alguna vez llegaré a una milla. Tal vez me tome diez años. Pero sí me interesa que exista un momento en que pueda decir: llegamos a una milla, o a un kilómetro.

Además de estas ideas sobre distancia y desplazamiento, ¿qué está informando tu trabajo actualmente?

CL: Una parte importante tiene que ver con Guatemala. Por mi situación migratoria en Estados Unidos, durante mucho tiempo no he podido salir del país. A veces pienso en esa idea de “la jaula de oro”, como en la canción de Los Tigres del Norte: estar aquí, pero no poder regresar.

Por eso he empezado a estudiar más sobre los mayas en Guatemala. Antes de venir a Estados Unidos vivíamos en una aldea, fuera de una ciudad. La manera de vivir de mis abuelos y de la gente de esas comunidades es completamente diferente de mi manera de vivir actualmente.

Estoy intentando educarme en kaqchikel, que es la lengua que habla mi abuela, pero también en las historias que existen dentro de esa lengua. Mi mamá y su hermana hablan entre ellas y reconocen que hay historias que solamente existen o se transmiten de determinadas maneras dentro de ese idioma. Para mí, estudiarlo es una forma de acceder a otro mundo.

Tu obra ha entrado en nuevos contextos institucionales, con exposiciones y adquisiciones de museos. ¿Eso ha cambiado la forma en que piensas tu práctica?

CL: Sí, aunque creo que los cambios son normales. Si miras mi trabajo de hace algunos años, había más globos, pinturas o banderas; después llegaron las esculturas. Las direcciones cambian.

Entrar en el circuito de los museos también significa que la gente empieza a reconocerte por ciertos tipos de obra. Eso forma parte de convertirse en un artista profesional. A veces te buscan por algo específico que ya conocen de tu trabajo.

Pero me gustaría tener más oportunidades de conversar con artistas, galeristas y curadores que estén realmente relacionados con Guatemala. Estoy en una situación en la que no puedo ir al país, así que deseo acercarme más, pero mi acceso todavía es limitado.

Durante varios años también organizaste proyectos para aumentar la visibilidad de artistas latinoamericanos, particularmente a través de La Onda. ¿Cómo surgió ese proyecto?

CL: En Kansas City hay una comunidad latina importante, pero las instituciones, las galerías y el discurso alrededor del arte latino muchas veces no llegan a un nivel muy específico. Todo termina siendo demasiado general.

Una colega, Kiki, y yo empezamos preguntándonos cómo podíamos conseguir que hubiera más exposiciones de artistas de América Latina. Uno de los problemas era precisamente esa generalización: “Aquí están los artistas latinos”, y luego todo se reducía a determinados momentos o imágenes, por ejemplo el Día de Muertos. Nunca se llegaba a algo más profundo.

Decidimos hacer exposiciones con diez artistas diferentes cada vez. Terminamos organizando alrededor de diez o doce muestras durante tres años, una cada dos o tres meses. Por ahora no hay planes para continuar el proyecto, pero sí hay ganas.

Mirando hacia adelante, ¿qué nuevas preguntas estás empezando a explorar?

CL: Me interesa entender mejor los objetos de Guatemala y del mundo maya, pero también cómo funcionan cuando entran en un museo. Estoy pensando mucho en la educación: quién es responsable de producir el conocimiento alrededor de un objeto, cómo se utiliza esa información y para quién está hecha.

A veces leo un ensayo de un historiador del arte y me parece increíble, pero también pienso: ¿Cómo podemos comunicar estas ideas de una manera que no esté hecha solamente para personas que ya pertenecen al mundo del arte? ¿Cómo podemos crear un programa educativo para una audiencia distinta? Porque la gente que está trabajando en esas fábricas industriales, la gente que está cortando pollo, probablemente no está leyendo el ensayo que escribió determinado curador. Me interesa pensar cómo el arte y la educación pueden llegar también a ellos.

Speaking with Sandra Monterroso (Guatemala, 1974) is to understand that, in her work, there are no clear boundaries between art, memory, and political action. Each answer leads to another layer of meaning, as though her textiles, videos, and performances were connected by a single ancestral thread running through time. What emerges is not merely the trajectory of a contemporary artist, but the persistent development of a voice that has transformed artistic practice into a space of cultural resistance and decolonial reflection.

When I ask her about the continuity of her artistic practice, Sandra does not begin by talking about techniques or exhibitions. Her answer turns immediately to what she considers the core of her entire artistic genealogy: “the defence of Indigenous peoples in the reconstruction of my own identity as a Maya woman and artist.” This statement offers a key to understanding a body of work in which artistic languages change, but the underlying thought remains constant. Textiles, performance, and video emerge as different vehicles for the same exploration of identity, territory, and memory.

The conversation inevitably turns to textiles, one of the most recognisable aspects of her practice. Sandra recalls, however, that her initial approach to this medium was not part of a preconceived plan. It all began in 2008, while she was designing costumes for an audiovisual work entitled Meditando el error. Textiles, she explains, initially served as a scenographic resource, but something changed when she observed those pieces outside the context of the video. She discovered that they possessed a power of their own. From that moment on, she decided to continue exploring a language that would eventually become a fundamental aspect of her career.

As she discusses the ancestral techniques she employs, she makes a revealing distinction. “I don’t like to call them crafts because I believe it is an ancient art that is connected to the present,” she explains. This distinction is significant. For Sandra, weaving, dyeing, and ancestral pigments are neither folkloric remnants nor practices frozen in time. They are living forms of knowledge that continue to generate meaning within contemporary art.

You’ve described discovering art despite having limited access to it growing up. How did those early encounters shape your path toward painting?

LS: I think art came to me through imagination. Even though my childhood was marked by social issues, I would create a different world through my imagination. As we grow up, we look for other ways to express ourselves and to keep moving through life. Art became a way for me to continue accessing that place that, until then, had remained in my childhood.

In my pre-teen years, I discovered the city’s graffiti and murals while walking around with my mother or grandmother. Street art is very democratic, and it was through it that I realized I wanted to be an artist. I would use any material that could offer me color: nail polish, charcoal, makeup, eyeshadow, and so on. When I painted, I felt as though I were creating a different universe for myself. I would even paint on the walls of my house.

I started working when I was very young to help my family. Between 2016 and 2021, I worked as a salesperson and later as an art assistant at an art supply store in São Paulo. I always say that place was my college. I learned about different materials and techniques, and I met many artists. It was there that I began painting on canvas and experimenting with different techniques.

You are a self-taught artist. What did that process of learning independently look like for you?

LS: I learned from my family how to “make do with what you have,” so being self-taught has always felt natural to me. It meant painting without being afraid of making mistakes, experimenting, and, through that process, understanding what I liked or didn’t like about the result. It was also about learning through practice and knowing where and when to stop.

Do you think not having formal academic training gave you a particular freedom to develop your own methods and visual vocabulary?

LS: I think academic training has its importance, but I believe that if I had had the opportunity to study art before beginning to work as an artist, my visual language would be different.

Much of your work comes from your experience as an Afro-Brazilian woman, but it also seems that painting has become a way of looking back at your family and the histories that shaped you. How has your understanding of your own identity changed through making art?

LS: I learn a lot through painting; it is almost like a form of self-analysis for me. Even though much of my work comes from a subjective place, it is still collective. I see that many women identify with what I express through it.

I am so grateful for what I do. Working with art has taught me to understand the system we live in, and it has helped me break cycles that seemed to have been predetermined for me. Today, I feel more aware and confident that I can go far.

Women are at the center of much of your work. Who are these figures, and how do you think about the women you choose to represent?

LS: Some of the female figures in my work are based on references from my family, but lately I’ve been bringing in questions around feelings, my own feelings, that don’t necessarily need to be represented through a literal self-portrait. I think this happens because these feelings and experiences are not uniquely mine. I don’t usually sketch, so these figures emerge through the process of painting.

Your work brings painting into dialogue with fabric, embroidery, shells, resin, and found materials. How does materiality shape the way you build meaning in your practice?

LS: Some of these materials, such as fabric, remind me of the domestic environment. Since some of my paintings speak about this environment, I believe materiality can connect with the subject. The technique of assemblage emerged in my work in a timid and curious way. Three-dimensional materials and embroidery showed me a beautiful and magical way of composing alongside painting.

Spirituality has become increasingly present in your recent work. How has this dimension of your practice evolved, particularly in the way your paintings move between the everyday and the sacred?

LS: I think bringing spirituality into my painting is as natural as eating. It is part of my universe, of what I believe in and practice. Talking about the spirituality present in our everyday lives is also about believing that there is something beyond this life and that we are not alone.

Your research has increasingly connected Brazil with other parts of the African diaspora, particularly Angola. How have those encounters changed the way you think about ancestry and your own practice?

LS: Going to Angola was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. There, I learned even more about how deeply Bantu culture is present in Brazil, even in our language. I also learned that many of us carry an image of Africa in our minds—an imagined, mythical Africa—and that we need to deconstruct many of the ideas and assumptions we hold.

During my residency at Angola Air, I was able to listen to many artists and meet people from different walks of life. Hearing their stories inspired me. The year after the residency, I returned to Luanda on my own. I wanted to research popular beliefs there without going deeply into any specific religion. I then created a series of paintings called Fé Feitiço, in which I brought together Brazilian and Angolan beliefs, giving voice to what we learn through oral tradition and reflecting on how much of this knowledge we are losing with the advancement of modernity and globalization.

What I brought into my practice is more about the process of being attentive to feeling, listening, and experience. In the end, these things can be very important to artistic creativity.

At this stage in your practice, what ideas or questions are you most interested in exploring next?

LS: I’ve always liked experimenting with new things in my paintings. Usually, I would do this without having much time: I would experiment within works that I already needed to finish and deliver. It was a little risky, but it was also interesting. Now, I’ve decided to take a break from deadlines so that I can dedicate myself to experimenting with different practices. I’ve become even more interested in Surrealism, oil painting, and ceramic sculpture.

Has hablado de cómo descubriste el arte a pesar de haber tenido un acceso limitado a él durante tu infancia. ¿De qué manera esos primeros encuentros marcaron tu camino hacia la pintura?

LS: Creo que el arte llegó a mí a través de la imaginación. Aunque mi infancia estuvo marcada por problemáticas sociales, yo creaba un mundo distinto a través de mi imaginación. A medida que crecemos, buscamos otras formas de expresarnos y de seguir avanzando en la vida. El arte se convirtió para mí en una manera de seguir accediendo a ese lugar que, hasta entonces, había permanecido en mi infancia.

Durante mi preadolescencia, descubrí los grafitis y murales de la ciudad mientras caminaba con mi madre o mi abuela. El arte urbano es muy democrático, y fue a través de él que entendí que quería ser artista. Utilizaba cualquier material que pudiera ofrecerme color: esmalte de uñas, carbón, maquillaje, sombra de ojos, entre otros. Cuando pintaba, sentía que estaba creando un universo diferente para mí. Incluso pintaba las paredes de mi casa.

Empecé a trabajar desde muy joven para ayudar a mi familia. Entre 2016 y 2021, trabajé como vendedora y después como asistente de arte en una tienda de materiales artísticos en São Paulo. Siempre digo que ese lugar fue mi universidad. Allí aprendí sobre distintos materiales y técnicas, y conocí a muchos artistas. Fue también allí donde empecé a pintar sobre lienzo y a experimentar con diferentes técnicas.

Eres una artista autodidacta. ¿Cómo fue para ti ese proceso de aprender de manera independiente?

LS: Aprendí de mi familia a “arreglármelas con lo que tengo”, así que ser autodidacta siempre me resultó algo natural. Para mí significó pintar sin miedo a equivocarme, experimentar y, a través de ese proceso, entender qué me gustaba o no del resultado. También implicó aprender mediante la práctica y saber dónde y cuándo detenerme.

¿Crees que no haber tenido una formación académica formal te dio cierta libertad para desarrollar tus propios métodos y tu propio vocabulario visual?

LS: Creo que la formación académica tiene su importancia, pero pienso que, si hubiera tenido la oportunidad de estudiar arte antes de empezar a trabajar como artista, mi lenguaje visual sería diferente.

Gran parte de tu trabajo parte de tu experiencia como mujer afrobrasileña, pero también parece que la pintura se ha convertido en una forma de volver la mirada hacia tu familia y las historias que te han moldeado. ¿Cómo ha cambiado tu comprensión de tu propia identidad a través de la práctica artística?

LS: Aprendo mucho a través de la pintura; para mí es casi una forma de autoanálisis. Aunque gran parte de mi trabajo surge de un lugar subjetivo, también tiene una dimensión colectiva. Veo que muchas mujeres se identifican con lo que presento a través de mi obra.

Estoy muy agradecida por lo que hago. Trabajar con arte me ha enseñado a comprender el sistema en el que vivimos y me ha ayudado a romper ciclos que parecían estar predeterminados para mí. Hoy me siento más consciente y segura de que puedo llegar lejos.

Las mujeres ocupan un lugar central en gran parte de tu obra. ¿Quiénes son estas figuras y cómo piensas a las mujeres que eliges representar?

LS: Algunas de las figuras femeninas de mi obra parten de referencias de mi propia familia, pero últimamente he empezado a incorporar cuestiones relacionadas con los sentimientos, con mis propios sentimientos, que no necesariamente tienen que representarse mediante un autorretrato literal. Creo que esto sucede porque esos sentimientos y experiencias no son exclusivamente míos. No suelo hacer bocetos, así que estas figuras aparecen durante el propio proceso de pintar.

Tu trabajo pone la pintura en diálogo con telas, bordados, conchas, resina y objetos encontrados. ¿Cómo influye la materialidad en la manera en que construyes significado dentro de tu práctica?

LS: Algunos de estos materiales, como la tela, me remiten al entorno doméstico. Como algunas de mis pinturas hablan de ese espacio, creo que la materialidad puede establecer una conexión con el tema. La técnica del assemblage apareció en mi obra de una manera tímida y curiosa. Los materiales tridimensionales y el bordado me mostraron una forma bella y mágica de componer junto con la pintura.

La espiritualidad se ha vuelto cada vez más presente en tu obra reciente. ¿Cómo ha evolucionado esta dimensión de tu práctica, especialmente en la manera en que tus pinturas se mueven entre lo cotidiano y lo sagrado?

LS: Creo que llevar la espiritualidad a mi pintura es tan natural como comer. Forma parte de mi universo, de aquello en lo que creo y practico. Hablar de la espiritualidad presente en nuestra vida cotidiana también tiene que ver con creer que existe algo más allá de esta vida y que no estamos solos.

Tu investigación ha conectado cada vez más a Brasil con otras partes de la diáspora africana, especialmente Angola. ¿Cómo han cambiado esos encuentros tu forma de pensar la ancestralidad y tu propia práctica?

LS: Viajar a Angola fue una de las experiencias más increíbles de mi vida. Allí aprendí aún más sobre la profunda presencia de la cultura bantú en Brasil, incluso en nuestro idioma. También comprendí que muchos de nosotros llevamos en la mente una determinada imagen de África —una África imaginada, mítica— y que necesitamos deconstruir muchas de las ideas y suposiciones que arrastramos.

Durante mi residencia en Angola Air, pude escuchar a muchos artistas y conocer a personas de distintos ámbitos. Escuchar sus historias me inspiró. Al año siguiente de la residencia, regresé sola a Luanda. Quería investigar las creencias populares de allí sin adentrarme demasiado en ninguna religión específica. Después creé una serie de pinturas titulada Fé Feitiço, en la que reuní creencias brasileñas y angoleñas, dando voz a aquello que aprendemos a través de la tradición oral y reflexionando sobre cuánto de ese conocimiento estamos perdiendo con el avance de la modernidad y la globalización.

Lo que incorporé a mi práctica tiene más que ver con el proceso de prestar atención a los sentimientos, a la escucha y a la experiencia. Al final, todo esto puede ser muy importante para la creatividad artística.

En esta etapa de tu práctica, ¿qué ideas, materiales o preguntas te interesa explorar a continuación?

LS: Siempre me ha gustado experimentar con cosas nuevas en mis pinturas. Por lo general, lo hacía sin disponer de mucho tiempo: experimentaba dentro de obras que ya tenía que terminar y entregar. Era un poco arriesgado, pero también interesante. Ahora he decidido tomarme una pausa de los plazos de entrega para poder dedicarme a experimentar con distintas prácticas. Me he interesado aún más por el Surrealismo, la pintura al óleo y la escultura en cerámica.

“There are always flowers for those who want to see them.” —

Henri Matisse

“The nation is shattered,” begins the poem Spring View, “but its rivers and mountains remain.”

Its author, the Tang dynasty poet Du Fu (712–770 CE), describes in this verse the turmoil that followed China’s bloody An Lushan Rebellion (755–763 CE), set against the cruel ambivalence of nature’s annual blossoming. “The flames of war have burned for three months,” Du Fu recounts. “Spring has come to the capital, and thick undergrowth buries it.” While birds sing and flowers bloom, millions suffer and palaces burn. More than 1,200 years after those words were first traced in black ink onto paper made from rattan and mulberry bark, the principle embodied in Du Fu’s verses continues to resonate today. Like China’s Sword of Goujian, these lines cut across distant latitudes and centuries of artistic and dynastic renewal: empires of power and knowledge may change, but landscapes endure.

To paraphrase the Chilean writer Benjamín Labatut, another, more recent gnomic author, reality does not exist independently of the act of observation. According to the history the South American writer unfolds in his books, scientists such as Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg repeatedly struggled to “deal with the paradoxes and contradictions [of science].” In When We Cease to Understand the World, Labatut constructs cautionary tales around scientific breakthroughs throughout history that proved to be double-edged swords. These include, for example, the invention of Prussian blue, which would later lead to Zyklon B, and the theory of relativity, which ultimately contributed to nuclear fission and the invention of the atomic bomb.

Un verdor terrible was published in English under the title When We Cease to Understand the World, although its literal translation would be A Terrible Greenness. Alluding to the recurring and horrifying vision suffered by chemist Fritz Haber—inventor of artificial fertilizers and mustard gas—of plants taking over the world, the phrase comes immediately to mind (as does Du Fu’s relentless poem) when looking at José Jun Martínez’s vigorously redemptive paintings of flowers.

Martínez, a Puerto Rican-born and raised artist who trained at London’s Royal College of Art, has committed himself to a form of landscape painting that is stubbornly anachronistic and fiercely idiosyncratic. He creates heavily impastoed oil paintings, and his body of work feels at once resolutely traditional and passionately unusual. Like Du Fu’s poem, originally rendered in pictograms, Martínez’s paintings combine reflections on a broken country with a commitment to art as “an exercise in active contemplation.” The object of Martínez’s hyper-focused observation is Puerto Rico’s tropical flora, on an island ravaged by colonialism, corruption, and increasingly severe disasters brought about by climate change and political dysfunction.

If Martínez’s giant paintings of flowers—and trees and rivers—could speak, they would denounce the vulnerability of human-made systems. At the same time, they would proclaim the tenacity of nature and the measures by which that resilience might be understood. “A painter can say all he wants to with fruit or flowers, or even clouds,” Édouard Manet once told an interlocutor, illustrating the indifference that the artist regarded as the father of Impressionism felt toward the conventional hierarchy of genres. In the late nineteenth century, those hierarchies established the primacy of history painting—that is, classical, religious, mythological, and allegorical subjects—over every other subject rendered in oil, including scenes of everyday life, portraiture, still life, and landscape.

One hundred and fifty years later, these genres have mingled and multiplied promiscuously, largely in the service of conceptual approaches to art-making. For the young Martínez—he is 32—the act of painting constitutes both an affirmation of his “fields of flowers” and an aesthetic rebellion. In response to the world’s unreflective technophilia and what he calls the “individual and collective fatigue” of our time, his anthophilia—his love of flowers—offers a rigorous, swirling portrait of nature’s indomitable creativity, in the spirit of Vincent van Gogh.

“Considering everything we have lived through in recent years,” Martínez says of Puerto Rico, his homeland, “my artistic practice has led me to sow fields of flowers and weeds across my canvases.” From painting floral arrangements to “spending months visiting a farm in the El Yunque rainforest to paint flowers en plein air,” the artist has moved between studios in San Juan and London, expanding both the ambitions and the scale of his paintings.

Consider El Abrazo de las Fieras (The Embrace of the Beasts, 2022) and Quince Segundos Antes de la Medianoche (Fifteen Seconds Before Midnight, 2023). The former depicts a field of wildflowers across an enormous eight-by-eight-foot canvas, like a wall in bloom. The latter presents the intensely yellow flowers of a flamboyant tree, a botanical transplant whose ability to withstand climatic events such as storms and hurricanes is legendary. Martínez’s golden spray also appears as a flower the size of a bear, as though the plant were rising onto its hind legs: a cosmic, enveloping presence, safeguarding life amid a recurring regime of disaster and embodying the regenerative force Martínez calls “dynamic hope.”

Flowers are a familiar and enduring subject throughout the history of Western art. In religious imagery, lilies symbolize the purity of the Virgin Mary. In Baroque vanitas paintings, cut flowers serve as stark reminders of mortality. Monet and Matisse turned to botanical subjects to explore the qualities of light and color.

The Surrealists introduced floral motifs into their investigations of dreams and metamorphosis. Georgia O’Keeffe used floral imagery in enlarged, almost abstract close-ups to draw the viewer’s gaze ever closer. Martínez, a thoroughly contemporary artist who uses painting—perhaps humanity’s most determined study of the visible—as a bastion against some of the world’s most intractable challenges, invokes this extensive history while appropriating the formal and symbolic potential of flowers as a vital force.

From Martínez’s blank canvases emerges a generative abundance that he has transformed into an artistic mission. The enormous petals, stigmas, and stamens in his compositions, which in turn form gigantic flowers, paradoxically answer a question he has posed in several public statements: “When everything passes, what remains?”

The answer, as embodied in his powerful paintings, echoes Du Fu: “The nation is shattered; the flowers and nature remain.”

He received Bucknell University’s Ekard Visiting Fellowship in 2023, the Kennedy Family Visiting Fellowship at the University of South Florida in 2018, a Creative Capital/Warhol Foundation grant in 2009, and was named critic-in-residence at the Bronx Museum in 2011.

He co-founded The Brooklyn Rail in 1999, wrote art criticism for the Village Voice from 2008 to 2016, and served as an art and culture critic for Artnet News from 2016 to 2018. He has lectured widely at institutions including Yale University, Pratt Institute, and the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in the Netherlands, and has curated exhibitions at major museums across the United States, Europe, and Latin America. He served as guest curator of the 2023 Converge 45 biennial in Portland, Oregon, and is currently curator-at-large at the University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum.

El antófilo: El arte de José Jun Martínez

“Siempre hay flores para aquellos que quieren verlas” -

“La patria está quebrantada”, comienza el poema Contemplación primaveral, “mas permanecen sus ríos y montañas”.

El autor, el poeta Du Fu (712-770 d. C.), de la dinastía Tang, describe en este verso el tumulto que tuvo lugar tras la sangrienta rebelión china de An Lushan (755-63 d. C.) en medio de la cruel ambivalencia del florecimiento anual de la naturaleza. “Las llamas de la guerra han ardido tres meses seguidos”, relata Du Fu, “La primavera ha llegado a la capital, y espesas matas la sepultan.” Mientras los pájaros cantan y las flores florecen, millones de personas sufren y los palacios arden. Tras más de 1.200 años desde que se trazaran esas palabras con tinta negra sobre papel de ratán y corteza de morera, el principio que reflejan los versos de Du Fu sigue perdurando en la actualidad. Como la Espada de Goujian de China, estos versos traspasan latitudes lejanas y siglos de renovación artística y dinástica: los imperios del poder y del conocimiento varían, pero los paisajes son eternos.

Parafraseando al escritor chileno Benjamín Labatut, otro autor gnómico de cosecha más reciente, la realidad no existe como algo independiente del acto de la observación. Según la historia que este autor sudamericano refleja en sus libros, científicos como Neils Bohry Werner Heisenberg fracasaron repetidas veces a la hora de “lidiar con las paradojas y las contradicciones (de la ciencia)”. El autor de Un verdor terrible, Labatut, crea cuentos con moraleja sobre distintos avances científicos a lo largo de la historia que son un arma de doble filo. Por ejemplo, la invención del azul de Prusia, que más tarde derivó en el Zyklon B; y la teoría de la relatividad, que dio lugar a la fisión nuclear y a la invención de la bomba atómica.

La obra Un Verdor Terrible se ha publicado en inglés bajo el título When We Cease to Understand the World, siendo la traducción realmente “A Terrible Greenness”. Haciendo alusión a una visión recurrente y horrible de plantas apoderándose del mundo que sufría el químico Fritz Haber, inventor de los fertilizantes artificiales y del gas mostaza, la frase nos viene directamente a la mente (a la vez que el implacable poema de Du Fu) tal como vemos las pinturas de flores vigorosamente redentoras de José Jun Martínez.

Martínez, un artista formado en la Royal College of Art de Londres, nacido y criado en Puerto Rico, se ha comprometido con un tipo de paisajismo tenazmente anacrónico y ferozmente idiosincrático. Crea cuadros al óleo fuertemente empastados y su línea de trabajo resulta firmemente tradicional y apasionadamente inusual. Como el poema de Du Fu, originalmente plasmado en pictogramas, las pinturas de Martínez combinan las reflexiones sobre un país roto con un compromiso con el arte como “un ejercicio de contemplación activa”. El objeto de la observación hiperfocalizada de Martínez es la flora tropical de Puerto Rico, una isla destrozada por el colonialismo, la corrupción y el agravamiento de las catástrofes causadas por el cambio climático y la disfunción política.

Si los cuadros de flores gigantes (y árboles y ríos) de Martínez hablaran, denunciarían la vulnerabilidad de los sistemas creados por el hombre. De igual manera, proclamarían la tenacidad de la naturaleza y las métricas capaces de captar esa resiliencia. “Un pintor puede decir todo lo que quiera con frutas o flores, o incluso nubes” dijo Édouard Manet a un interlocutor para ilustrar la indiferencia que, el considerado padre del Impresionismo, mostraba por la convencional jerarquía de los géneros. A finales del siglo XIX, esas jerarquías formulaban la primacía de la pintura de historia (es decir, los temas clásicos, religiosos, mitológicos y alegóricos) sobre todos los demás temas pintados al óleo (escenas de la vida cotidiana, retratos, naturaleza muerta y paisajes).

Ciento cincuenta años después, dichos géneros se han mezclado y multiplicado promiscuamente, en gran medida al servicio de enfoques conceptuales de la creación artística. Para el joven Martínez (tiene 32 años), el acto de pintar constituye a la vez una afirmación de sus “campos de flores” y una rebeldía estética. Como respuesta a la tecnofilia irreflexiva del mundo y lo que denomina la “fatiga individual y colectiva” de nuestro tiempo, su antofilia (el amor por las flores) muestra un retrato riguroso y arremolinado de la indomable creatividad de la naturaleza, al estilo de Vincent van Gogh.

“Teniendo en cuenta todo lo que hemos vivido en los últimos años”, comenta Martínez sobre Puerto Rico, su país de origen, “mi práctica artística me ha llevado a sembrar campos de flores y maleza en mis lienzos.” Desde pintar cuadros de arreglos florales a “pasar meses visitando una finca en el bosque tropical El Yunque para retratar flores en plein air”, el artista se ha trasladado a estudios en San Juan y en Londres, lo que ha expandido tanto las expectativas como el tamaño de sus pinturas.

Analicemos los cuadros El Abrazo de las Fieras (2022) y Quince Segundos Antes de la Medianoche (2023). El primero muestra un campo de flores silvestres en un enorme lienzo de ocho por ocho, como si de una pared en flor se tratara; el segundo nos presenta las flores en un tono amarillo intenso de un flamboyán, un trasplante botánico cuya resistencia frente a fenómenos climáticos como tormentas y huracanes es legendaria. El golden spray de Martínez también se muestra como una flor del tamaño de un oso, como si la planta se alzara sobre sus patas traseras; una presencia cósmica y envolvente, garante de la vida en medio de un régimen regular de desastres y un símbolo de la fuerza regenerativa que Martínez denomina “esperanza dinámica”.

Las flores son un tema conocido y perdurable en la historia del arte occidental. En la imaginería religiosa, los lirios simbolizan la pureza de la Virgen María. En las pinturas vanitas del barroco, las flores cortadas son una cruda alusión a la mortalidad. Monet y Matisse recurrieron a temas botánicos para estudiar las cualidades de la luz y del color.

Los surrealistas introdujeron los motivos florales en su estudio de los sueños y la metamorfosis. Georgia O’Keeffe usó las imágenes florales en sus pinturas con primeros planos ampliados y casi abstractos para atraer aún más la mirada. Martínez, un artista completamente contemporáneo que utiliza la pintura (probablemente el estudio de lo visible más decidido de la historia de la humanidad) como bastión contra los retos más inextricables del mundo, evoca esta extensa historia, a la vez que se apropia del potencial formal y simbólico de las flores como fuerza vital.

De los lienzos en blanco de Martínez emerge una plenitud generativa que ha transformado en una misión artística. Los enormes pétalos, estigmas y estambres de sus composiciones que, a su vez, forman flores gigantes, responden paradójicamente a una pregunta que ha planteado en varias declaraciones públicas: “Cuando todo pasa, ¿qué perdura?” La respuesta, tal como se plasma en sus poderosas pinturas, se hace eco de Du Fu: “La patria está quebrantada, permanecen las flores y la naturaleza”.

Stillz has been presented as the Andy Warhol of his generation, a comparison rooted in his use of Polaroids and the consistency of his visual language across different media.

Titled It’s a Beautiful Day, You’ll See Someone Come Along and Ruin It, the exhibition offers a broader look at a practice that moves between photography, painting, music video and film. Stillz, born in Miami to Colombian parents, began photographing friends skating as a teenager before developing his practice in New York. He has since become widely recognized for his Polaroids and collaborations with figures such as Bad Bunny, while continuing to build a body of work beyond the images most associated with his public profile.

The exhibition places that wider practice at the center. Stillz is a self-taught painter who developed under the influence of Julio Larraz, with his work now moving between photography, silkscreen and painting. As he travels, he sets up temporary studios in the cities where he spends time, producing a large body of work that has only gradually been made visible.

For curator Marina Reyes-Franco, movement is an important part of understanding the work. She describes Stillz as a constant traveler who, despite being afraid of takeoff, repeatedly photographs the view from the airplane window. She reads the gesture as a way of capturing what she calls “the divine and the ominous simultaneously.”

That tension also runs through Stillz’s relationship with visibility. His work is closely tied to some of the most recognizable faces in popular culture, yet he has maintained a deliberately private presence. He has described his work as a way of revealing himself gradually, “like a puzzle,” while preferring to remain behind the images he creates.

Esta edición de On View nos lleva a San Juan, donde Stillz presenta su primera exposición en el Caribe en Walter Otero Contemporary Art. Stillz ha sido presentado como el Andy Warhol de su generación, una comparación basada en su uso de la Polaroid y en la consistencia de su lenguaje visual a través de distintos medios.

Titulada It’s a Beautiful Day, You’ll See Someone Come Along and Ruin It, la exposición ofrece una mirada más amplia a una práctica que se mueve entre la fotografía, la pintura, el videoclip y el cine. Nacido en Miami de padres colombianos, Stillz comenzó fotografiando a sus amigos mientras patinaban cuando era adolescente, antes de desarrollar su práctica en Nueva York. Desde entonces, se ha hecho ampliamente conocido por sus Polaroids y sus colaboraciones con figuras como Bad Bunny, al tiempo que ha seguido construyendo un cuerpo de obra más allá de las imágenes más asociadas a su perfil público.

La exposición sitúa en el centro esa práctica más amplia. Stillz es un pintor autodidacta que se formó bajo la influencia de Julio Larraz, y su trabajo se mueve hoy entre la fotografía, la serigrafía y la pintura. Rita Fernández is a Mexican artist whose practice expands the language of painting through drawing, objects, and installation. Working with materials that range from traditional painterly surfaces to underwear, bedsheets, tights, and hair, Fernández explores the boundaries of what a painting can be while examining the relationship between the intimacy and materiality.

In conversation with Art in Latin America, Fernández discusses the influence of philosophy on her way of thinking and the introduction of personal materials into her work. She reflects on feminism and womanhood, intimacy and visibility, the experience of living between Mexico, Germany, and the United Kingdom, and her growing interest in the performative possibilities of painting.

Your work moves between painting, drawing, objects, and increasingly installation. When you think about your practice today, do you still primarily think of yourself as a painter?

RF: I do think of myself as a painter because, even though my practice has widened and I’ve incorporated new aspects to it, I’m always thinking in terms of painting taken to the limits.

For instance, when I work with personal objects, such as underwear, I think of them as if they were canvas, it’s just cotton fabric in the end. I consider if I should prime it, how many layers of primer, I think of how to stretch it, etc. I like to speculate on what a painting can be - or cannot be - and the formal reasons behind it. This is actually the fun part: to bend and play with preconceived notions.

You studied philosophy before pursuing painting. How has philosophy expanded the way you think about art? Was there anything about studying philosophy that you eventually found limiting, and that making art allowed you to approach differently?

RF: Art-making can be incredibly philosophical, but Philosophy is not necessarily related to the creative process behind an artistic practice. This doesn’t mean that philosophical research isn’t creative or that it doesn’t require a certain degree of artistry - it’s very appreciated when philosophers are good writers, I’d say - what I mean by this is that they do two very different things in the brain. At least they do in mine.

Studying philosophy shaped my way of thinking about anything. I had a great professor during my BA that used to say that studying Philosophy could be useful to anyone, regardless of what they ended up doing in life, because it enables you to systematize - or categorize - whatever new skill or knowledge you need to acquire, therefore, making it easier to learn anything new. I see what she meant by this, I inevitably categorise my thoughts, particularly around my practice. But, paradoxically enough, I think my most successful works have emerged from a raw material sensibility, intuition and free exploration, rather than from conceptual categorisation, even if I always come back to it.

Which topics or questions are currently informing your practice?

RF: I’m currently thinking about the relationship between concealing and revealing. Actually, I’ve been thinking a lot about relationships between contraries: the inner and outer, love and hate, restraint and surrender. But, in terms of the first two, what interests me about them is how they relate both to the body and to painting. I find it interesting how these two coincide in formal and thematic terms.

Questions around embodiment and subjectivity interest me greatly too, particularly how these two relate and determine each other, in other words: to what extent is one’s own subjectivity determined by some sense of embodiment (and vice versa)? How does our body determine and affect our sense of self?

You have increasingly introduced materials such as tights, underwear, bedsheets, and hair into your work. What changed when you began bringing these very personal objects into your painting?

RF: I think the shift was on a spiritual level. Because all of these materials are mine and have been worn and eroded by their use. In the case of the hair it feels even more intimate, as my body literally produced it. When I started including them, I had to be a lot more thoughtful than I usually am about the ways I could introduce them into the works. I had to really consider the reasons behind the inclusion of a certain material in a specific work, and if this inclusion was worth it, as there’s the scarcity factor to take into account.

There’s only a limited amount of these materials (I can only own and wear a certain amount of underwear, I’m afraid). So, this cautiousness, more like tentativeness, granted them with even more metaphoric meaning, they felt as if they physically carried stories with them now. At times, I felt like I was putting a spell on the works (or myself).

It is interesting to take an object that normally belongs to a private space and placing it within the public space of an artwork. What happens to intimacy when it becomes visible to other people?

RF: The contradiction is what interests me. Again, I’m increasingly fascinated by the relationship between concealment and revelation. When using underwear in an artwork, what is supposed to be hidden, for the person’s eye only, is left to the public eye, wide open. What this contradiction allows is to reflect on what intimacy can mean: is it about nudity? Or perhaps it’s about the actions around it? Is it about the relationship we have with our body and how we treat it?

By using these materials, my initial thought was to make the viewer think of the body through its absence. Ideas change as we put them into practice, and when we observe the reactions from an audience. I’ve gotten very diverse reactions with some of the pieces that include underwear, I think they can be particularly charged, as many people immediately relate it to something sexual, even as some sort of insinuation or invitation. I’m not offended by any of this at all, I enjoy to be reminded that my thoughts and my world view aren’t shared with the rest of the world.

Feminism and womanhood also seem to be important within your practice. Where does that interest come from, and how has your relationship to those ideas developed over time?

RF: I think being a feminist became a necessity when growing up, particularly in Mexico where gendered violence can be terrible. So, feminism came from a different place, rather than pure interest, and it definitely came from an angry place. Upon reflection, I think that feminism became my main tool to deal with my changing body - during puberty - I wouldn’t go as far to say that it was traumatic, but it definitely impacted me very deeply, which I think is evident, as one of the recurring themes in my work is the body as a permutable entity.

Contrary to Agnès Varda, I think I’ve moved away (just a little) from the anger and tried to become a more joyful feminist. I’m definitely still very angry but - I think - that I’ve allowed other more joyful feelings to enter how I view my own body, the world around it, and therefore, the work I can make out of the relationship between the two of them.

Are there particular artists, writers, or thinkers you find inspiration on?

RF: I’ve loved Ana Mendieta’s work for as long as I can remember. Her show, currently at Tate Modern, moved me enormously, especially the freshness and honesty in her approach to making. I admire the courage and candidness in which she spoke about her work too. I’m a huge admirer of Alina Szapocznikow’s work and her material sensibility, Eva Hesse has been a huge source of inspiration for me too from a young age, I also admire Hannah Wilke’s practice and the sense of performativity in her work, and what she does with it. Sophie Calle’s wit is incomparable, I adore her work.

I also find a lot of inspiration in literature and cinema. Clarice Lispector and the emotional depth of her novels deeply impacted me too. Chris Kraus’ novel I Love Dick really shocked me at the time, and made me reflect on my sense of self, as she does very well. Chantal Akerman’s News From Home also really touched me, to the point of me wanting to make my own version of it. I desisted on the idea, as we already have hers!

Moving between Mexico, Germany, and the United Kingdom, has being part of an international art environment changed the references that enter your work? Has living outside Mexico changed the way you understand your own background or the way it enters your practice?

RF: Yeah, I’m like a sponge, I absorb indiscriminately what is in my surroundings and then I let time - and trials and errors - help me discern what would be actually productive to incorporate - or not - into the work. My friend Carolina Orlando, curator and co-founder of LATAMesa, came over to the studio for a visit back in June and pointed out that the works I made during my time living in Berlin last year were very German. She is right, some of the compositions and materials I started using while living there were informed from being exposed to a different art ecosystem than the one I’ve found in London.

More importantly, knowing that I’d only stay in Berlin for three months gave me great freedom, which allowed me to make work that I probably wouldn’t have made in London. Living outside of Mexico has definitely altered and transformed my practice, and also how I think of myself whenever I go back there. It’s a different feeling every time, the sense of estrangement getting more acute each time. In the past, these feelings presented themselves to me in the form of displacement and homesickness, which are themes I’ve dealt with in the past - the Azulejos series, for instance - Now, as time goes by, I’ve grown more fond of the idea of impermanence as a remedy for estrangement. I find lots of comfort in Heraclitus’ river allegory, it reminds me that not only have I changed, but also the place as I last encountered it. I guess, to properly answer your question, my background and how I understand it shifts constantly, and what I find that I can always hold on to (in work and life) are my feelings around it at that moment.

When you look back at your earlier work, what do you think has changed most in the way you approach painting?

RF: I’m still learning what I enjoy about painting, hopefully I learn more and more every time. I think that’s been the most significant change: I’m increasingly making the work that I want to make. This sounds very simple and silly, but it’s taken me some time to actually do this when I’m in the studio, and not try and make “good work”, but the work that I feel like doing, even if it’s bad. It doesn’t make sense to paint if I’m not painting what I want or something that brings me joy, a sense of enjoyment or some sort of cathartic feeling.

In material terms, I’ve become more patient. I allow a lot more time to finish a painting, which is something I would have never done before. I’m able to put work away for an indefinite amount of time now, whereas before I’d try to finish the piece that I was currently working on until I did, or overworked it. This new patience of mine might be visible in some of my last works, as they’re heavily layered with different compositions, which are old (failed) paintings that I’ve put away for a while until I feel ready to work on them again and they finally become complete at some point.

Are there materials, formats, or ideas you would like to explore further? What are you looking forward to doing next?

RF: Larger-scale paintings, I believe. I’ve been working at smaller scales for a while now, and I’ve grown increasingly interested in painting that engages my whole body. I want to capture the enactment of painting within the painting itself (it’s almost redundant, I’m aware). I want to encapsulate the performative aspect of painting, not as an act, but through the actions required for it.

I’m interested in making my mark evident in the work, so that the viewer is reminded that a body made it. Some people tell me that, if these are my interests, I should move into performance art, but I disagree. First, I’m incredibly shy in front of a live audience. Second, what interests me is not the act itself, but the traces it leaves behind. I think this is why I keep coming back to look at Ana Mendieta’s work, and at the way her body became her medium. I’m looking forward to explore how these body traces can manifest and look like within a painterly practice.

Tu obra se mueve entre la pintura, el dibujo, los objetos y, cada vez más, la instalación. Cuando piensas en tu práctica hoy, ¿sigues considerándote principalmente pintora?

RF: Sí me considero pintora porque, aunque mi práctica se ha ampliado y he incorporado nuevos aspectos, siempre estoy pensando en términos de llevar la pintura hasta sus límites.

Por ejemplo, cuando trabajo con objetos personales, como ropa interior, pienso en ellos como si fueran lienzos; al final, no dejan de ser tela de algodón. Pienso si debería imprimarlos, cuántas capas de imprimación utilizar, cómo tensarlos, etc. Me gusta especular sobre lo que una pintura puede ser —o no puede ser— y sobre las razones formales detrás de ello. Esa es, en realidad, la parte divertida: doblar y jugar con ideas preconcebidas.

Estudiaste filosofía antes de dedicarte a la pintura. ¿De qué manera la filosofía amplió tu forma de pensar sobre el arte? ¿Hubo algo en el estudio de la filosofía que con el tiempo te pareciera limitante y que la práctica artística te permitiera abordar de otra manera?

RF: Hacer arte puede ser increíblemente filosófico, pero la filosofía no necesariamente está relacionada con el proceso creativo detrás de una práctica artística. Esto no significa que la investigación filosófica no sea creativa ni que no requiera cierto grado de sensibilidad artística —se aprecia mucho cuando los filósofos son buenos escritores, diría yo—; lo que quiero decir es que ambas cosas activan procesos muy distintos en el cerebro. Al menos en el mío.

Estudiar filosofía moldeó mi forma de pensar sobre cualquier cosa. Durante la licenciatura tuve una profesora increíble que solía decir que estudiar filosofía podía ser útil para cualquiera, independientemente de lo que terminara haciendo en la vida, porque te permite sistematizar —o categorizar— cualquier nueva habilidad o conocimiento que necesites adquirir y, por tanto, hace que aprender algo nuevo sea más fácil. Entiendo a qué se refería; inevitablemente categorizo mis pensamientos, especialmente los relacionados con mi práctica. Pero, paradójicamente, creo que mis obras más logradas han surgido de una sensibilidad material más cruda, de la intuición y de una exploración libre, en lugar de una categorización conceptual, aunque siempre termino regresando a ella.

¿Qué temas o preguntas están informando actualmente tu práctica?

RF: Actualmente estoy pensando en la relación entre ocultar y revelar. De hecho, he estado pensando mucho en relaciones entre opuestos: lo interior y lo exterior, el amor y el odio, la contención y la entrega. Pero, en cuanto a los dos primeros, lo que me interesa es cómo se relacionan tanto con el cuerpo como con la pintura. Me parece interesante cómo ambos coinciden en términos formales y temáticos.

También me interesan mucho las preguntas en torno a la corporalidad y la subjetividad, especialmente cómo ambas se relacionan y se determinan mutuamente. En otras palabras: ¿hasta qué punto la propia subjetividad está determinada por cierto sentido de corporalidad —y viceversa—? ¿Cómo determina y afecta nuestro cuerpo a nuestro sentido del yo?

Has incorporado cada vez más materiales como medias, ropa interior, sábanas y cabello a tu obra. ¿Qué cambió cuando comenzaste a introducir estos objetos tan personales en tu pintura?

RF: Creo que el cambio se produjo a un nivel espiritual. Porque todos estos materiales son míos y han sido usados y erosionados por su uso. En el caso del cabello, se siente aún más íntimo, ya que mi cuerpo literalmente lo produjo. Cuando empecé a incorporarlos, tuve que pensar mucho más de lo que suelo hacerlo en las maneras en que podía introducirlos en las obras. Tuve que considerar de verdad las razones detrás de la inclusión de un material determinado en una obra específica y si esa inclusión valía la pena, porque también hay que tener en cuenta el factor de la escasez.

Solo existe una cantidad limitada de estos materiales —solo puedo tener y usar cierta cantidad de ropa interior, me temo—. Así que esa cautela, o más bien esa actitud tentativa, les otorgó aún más significado metafórico; ahora sentía como si físicamente cargaran historias consigo. A veces sentía que estaba poniendo un hechizo sobre las obras —o sobre mí misma—.

Resulta interesante tomar un objeto que normalmente pertenece a un espacio privado y colocarlo dentro del espacio público de una obra de arte. ¿Qué ocurre con la intimidad cuando se vuelve visible para otras personas?

RF: Lo que me interesa es la contradicción. De nuevo, cada vez me fascina más la relación entre el ocultamiento y la revelación. Cuando utilizas ropa interior en una obra, aquello que se supone que debe permanecer oculto, reservado únicamente a la mirada de la persona, queda completamente expuesto ante la mirada pública. Lo que permite esta contradicción es reflexionar sobre qué puede significar la intimidad: ¿tiene que ver con la desnudez? ¿O quizá con las acciones que la rodean? ¿Tiene que ver con la relación que tenemos con nuestro cuerpo y con cómo lo tratamos?

Al utilizar estos materiales, mi idea inicial era hacer que el espectador pensara en el cuerpo a través de su ausencia. Las ideas cambian a medida que las llevamos a la práctica y cuando observamos las reacciones del público. He recibido reacciones muy diversas ante algunas piezas que incluyen ropa interior; creo que pueden estar especialmente cargadas, ya que muchas personas las relacionan inmediatamente con algo sexual, incluso como una especie de insinuación o invitación. No me ofende en absoluto; disfruto que me recuerden que mis pensamientos y mi visión del mundo no son compartidos por todo el mundo.

El feminismo y la feminidad también parecen tener un papel importante dentro de tu práctica. ¿De dónde surge ese interés y cómo ha evolucionado tu relación con esas ideas a lo largo del tiempo?

RF: Creo que ser feminista se convirtió en una necesidad al crecer, especialmente en México, donde la violencia de género puede ser terrible. Así que el feminismo surgió desde un lugar distinto al del simple interés, y definitivamente surgió desde la rabia. Al reflexionar sobre ello, creo que el feminismo se convirtió en mi principal herramienta para lidiar con los cambios de mi cuerpo durante la pubertad. No llegaría a decir que fue traumático, pero definitivamente tuvo un impacto muy profundo en mí, algo que creo que resulta evidente, ya que uno de los temas recurrentes de mi obra es el cuerpo entendido como una entidad mutable.

Al contrario que Agnès Varda, creo que me he alejado —aunque solo un poco— de la rabia y he intentado convertirme en una feminista más alegre. Definitivamente sigo muy enfadada, pero creo que he permitido que otros sentimientos más alegres entren en la manera en que veo mi propio cuerpo, el mundo que lo rodea y, por tanto, el trabajo que puedo producir a partir de la relación entre ambos.

¿Hay artistas, escritores o pensadores concretos en los que encuentres inspiración?

RF: Me encanta la obra de Ana Mendieta desde que tengo memoria. Su exposición, actualmente en Tate Modern, me conmovió enormemente, especialmente por la frescura y la honestidad de su manera de crear. También admiro el valor y la franqueza con los que hablaba sobre su obra. Soy una gran admiradora del trabajo de Alina Szapocznikow y de su sensibilidad material. Eva Hesse también ha sido una enorme fuente de inspiración para mí desde muy joven. Asimismo, admiro la práctica de Hannah Wilke, el sentido de performatividad presente en su obra y lo que hace con él. El ingenio de Sophie Calle es incomparable; adoro su trabajo.

También encuentro mucha inspiración en la literatura y el cine. Clarice Lispector y la profundidad emocional de sus novelas también tuvieron un gran impacto en mí. La novela I Love Dick, de Chris Kraus, realmente me impactó en su momento y me hizo reflexionar sobre mi sentido del yo, algo que ella hace muy bien. News From Home, de Chantal Akerman, también me conmovió muchísimo, hasta el punto de querer hacer mi propia versión. Desistí de la idea, ¡porque ya tenemos la suya!

Al moverte entre México, Alemania y el Reino Unido, ¿formar parte de un entorno artístico internacional ha cambiado las referencias que entran en tu obra? ¿Vivir fuera de México ha cambiado la forma en que entiendes tu propio origen o la manera en que este aparece en tu práctica?

RF: Sí, soy como una esponja. Absorbo indiscriminadamente lo que hay a mi alrededor y luego dejo que el tiempo —y el ensayo y error— me ayuden a discernir qué sería realmente productivo incorporar —o no— al trabajo. Mi amiga Carolina Orlando, curadora y cofundadora de LATAMesa, vino al estudio en junio y señaló que las obras que hice durante el tiempo que viví en Berlín el año pasado eran muy alemanas. Tiene razón; algunas de las composiciones y materiales que empecé a utilizar mientras vivía allí estuvieron influenciados por haber estado expuesta a un ecosistema artístico diferente al que he encontrado en Londres.

Más importante aún, saber que solo estaría en Berlín durante tres meses me dio una gran libertad, lo que me permitió hacer un tipo de trabajo que probablemente no habría hecho en Londres.

Vivir fuera de México definitivamente ha alterado y transformado mi práctica, y también la forma en que pienso sobre mí misma cada vez que regreso. Es una sensación diferente cada vez; el sentimiento de extrañamiento se vuelve más agudo en cada ocasión. En el pasado, estas sensaciones se manifestaban como desplazamiento y nostalgia, temas que ya he tratado antes —la serie Azulejos, por ejemplo—. Ahora, con el paso del tiempo, me he encariñado más con la idea de la impermanencia como remedio para el extrañamiento. Encuentro mucho consuelo en la alegoría del río de Heráclito; me recuerda que no solo he cambiado yo, sino también el lugar desde la última vez que lo encontré. Supongo que, para responder correctamente a tu pregunta, mi origen y la forma en que lo entiendo cambian constantemente, y lo que siempre encuentro como algo a lo que puedo aferrarme —tanto en el trabajo como en la vida— son mis sentimientos respecto a ello en ese momento.

Cuando miras hacia tus primeras obras, ¿qué crees que ha cambiado más en tu manera de abordar la pintura?

RF: Sigo aprendiendo qué es lo que disfruto de la pintura; espero aprender cada vez más. Creo que ese ha sido el cambio más significativo: cada vez hago más el trabajo que realmente quiero hacer. Suena muy simple y un poco tonto, pero me ha llevado tiempo lograr hacerlo realmente cuando estoy en el estudio, y dejar de intentar hacer «buen trabajo» para hacer el trabajo que me apetece hacer, incluso si es malo. No tiene sentido pintar si no estoy pintando lo que quiero o algo que me produzca alegría, disfrute o algún tipo de sensación catártica.

En términos materiales, me he vuelto más paciente. Me permito dedicar mucho más tiempo a terminar una pintura, algo que antes nunca habría hecho. Ahora soy capaz de guardar una obra durante un período indefinido, mientras que antes intentaba terminar la pieza en la que estaba trabajando hasta conseguirlo o hasta sobrecargarla. ¿Hay materiales, formatos o ideas que te gustaría seguir explorando? ¿Qué te ilusiona hacer a continuación?

RF: Pinturas de mayor escala, creo. Llevo un tiempo trabajando en escalas más pequeñas y cada vez me interesa más una pintura que involucre todo mi cuerpo. Quiero capturar la acción de pintar dentro de la propia pintura —sé que suena casi redundante—. Quiero encapsular el aspecto performativo de la pintura, no como un acto en sí mismo, sino a través de las acciones necesarias para realizarla.

Me interesa hacer evidente mi huella en la obra, de modo que al espectador se le recuerde que fue un cuerpo quien la hizo. Algunas personas me dicen que, si estos son mis intereses, debería pasarme al arte de performance, pero no estoy de acuerdo. Primero, soy increíblemente tímida frente a un público en vivo. Segundo, lo que me interesa no es el acto en sí, sino las huellas que deja. Creo que por eso sigo volviendo a mirar la obra de Ana Mendieta y la manera en que su cuerpo se convirtió en su medio.

Susanna V. Temkin is the Interim Chief Curator at El Museo del Barrio in New York, an institution founded in 1969 and deeply rooted in Puerto Rican, Latine, Latin American, and Caribbean art and culture.

In this conversation, Temkin reflects on El Museo’s history, its evolving mission, and its relationship with the community of East Harlem. She also discusses the museum’s permanent collection and the fall exhibitions opening this week, including Octopus & Others: Acts of Collaboration & Poetics and Teddy Sandoval and the Butch Gardens School of Art.

El Museo del Barrio was founded within a Puerto Rican and New York context, but its scope has expanded over time. What has remained fundamental to the museum’s history and mission?

ST: When El Museo was founded by artist Raphael Montañez Ortiz, it was also the moment of the Civil Rights movement. Puerto Rico was very much at the heart of the museum, but even very early on, El Museo was inclusive of artists from different backgrounds, so there was always this broader interest in visibility of those who had been underrepresented.

What has remained fundamental are the two pillars the museum grew out of: artists and education. We’re an artist-founded institution, and education has been central from the beginning. Our mission also speaks explicitly about developing the next generation of museumgoers. El Museo is a place where you can see yourself reflected in the art on the walls, but it is also a place where the next generation of scholars, artists, and museum professionals can develop.

Today, El Museo works across Latin American, Latine, Caribbean, Puerto Rican, and diasporic histories. How do you approach those distinctions in your curatorial practice?

ST: I never want to impose an identity on someone; I’ll always follow however they want to self-describe. At the same time, I believe in the diaspora. There’s a tendency, as humans, to want to categorize and want easy answers, but that’s not how we work as individuals or societies, who mix and interact with one another.

When it comes to El Museo, many people think we have a geographic focus, but we really don’t. I think it’s interesting to work transnationally and cross-culturally, but also intergenerationally. It’s when different generations meet that some of those conversations around identity can emerge very strongly. Nuyoricans who were on the front lines of the Nuyorican moment in the 1970s may still very much want to be called Nuyoricans, whereas younger generations may want to call themselves Diasporican. That allows us to talk about the particularities not only of culture, but also of perspective and generation.

How does El Museo maintain its relationship with East Harlem while also speaking to national and international audiences?

ST: We’ve been in this building [The Heckscher Building at 1230 Fifth Avenue] since 1977. It’s an interesting junction: we’re on Fifth Avenue, which is the glamorous Museum Mile, and we’re also still here in East Harlem/El Barrio/Spanish Harlem. We have a cross section of people who visit and a lot of international audiences, but in a recent audience survey our biggest zip code demographic was still our immediate neighborhood.

That relationship with the community also extends beyond the museum itself. We organize festivals that take place literally in the streets, including our Día de los Reyes parade, where we bring actual camels into the streets of New York City in the middle of January. East Harlem is such a special neighborhood because people engage in many different ways. Sometimes they hear something happening, come outside, bring their chairs and drinks, and join in. Dancing is very central to our block party, Uptown Bounce, or Museum Mile. So maintaining that relationship is not always about people entering the museum; sometimes it’s about the museum becoming part of the life of the neighborhood.

What can El Museo contribute to conversations around Latin American and Latine art that larger institutions may not?

ST: Only recently are we seeing a greater presence of Latine and Latin American art in more mainstream institutions. That speaks not only to the artists who have always been active, but also to the fact that there are more Latine museum professionals. The pipeline is changing.

We can often be an artist’s first institutional platform and be there at an important early moment in their career. Sometimes we present an artist and later learn that a work from the exhibition has been acquired by another museum.

Because we are a smaller institution, we can also take risks and respond more quickly. I think that allows us to remain at the forefront of introducing artists and histories that may take longer to enter larger institutions. I’m very proud that El Museo can be such an important first step in an artist’s career.

Do you see El Museo’s permanent collection as a form of canon-building? What gaps is the museum trying to address?

ST: The collection really reflects the communities that have shaped El Museo. So many works have come as donations from artists or local collectors, and that has shaped our holdings. We have strong Nuyorican holdings, and over the years we’ve refined how we want to collect: what strengths we want to continue, such as Puerto Rican art and printmaking, and where we need to pay more attention, including Indigenous artists, Afro-diasporic artists, graffiti and urban culture, and queer artists.

We want the artists and art forms we represent, including craft traditions, to be recognized within the so-called canon. But we also realize what a Eurocentric concept a canon is. We’re interested in acknowledging that there are multiple histories or narratives and no singular definition of what a canon can be. So while the collection allows us to assert the importance of these artists and traditions, we try to think about how it also gives us a way to push against the idea of one fixed or singular art-historical narrative.

To what extent can exhibitions reshape art history, and what helps an artist’s institutional recognition last beyond a show?

ST: I’m an art historian, and something I’m really passionate about is not just the exhibition, but the publication. We love our exhibitions, but ultimately they’re ephemeral, and the books are what last. El Museo has been publishing since the 1970s. More recently, our Sophie Rivera: Double Exposures book, for example, was that photographer’s first monograph ever published. I think that’s a really important contribution.

Exhibitions also become places for dialogue with audiences, critics, future scholars, and professors working in the field. They can become a place for collections-building too. We showed Juan Francisco Elso’s Por América, and shortly thereafter that work was acquired by the MoMA. I think that is a testament to what an exhibition can do in terms of visualizing different artists and histories.

At a time when questions around immigration and belonging are especially present in the United States, how do you see El Museo’s role?

ST: We recently presented the first survey of Coco Fusco in the United States. At a particular moment, many people were asking, ‘Are you going to adapt the show to be safer politically?’ For us, the answer was a resounding no. At El Museo, we realized that if we changed what we did, who or what we show, we wouldn’t be able to be true to ourselves or to our mission. El Museo fundamentally has to be a place that takes a stand against some of what we’re witnessing.

I also believe in the power of art to create a safe haven, a place where you can have a break from everything taking place around you, even when the art is discussing very challenging issues. A museum as a sanctuary. Standing strong in presenting these works is a statement in itself.

The fall shows are coming up this week. One of them, Octopus & Others: Acts of Collaboration & Poetics, returns to Papo Colo’s 1982 project Octopus. Why is it important to revisit that history now?

ST: The starting point for this exhibition was a donation from artist Papo Colo. Octopus was a collaborative project from 1982 that brought together artists, poets, and other cultural figures working across New York. It is a project that has been discussed often, and the images in our archives are incredibly compelling, but much of its history had remained relatively unknown. Papo very generously donated some of the surviving panels from the project, which gave us an opportunity to return to it in a much more concrete way, and really learn more about some of the mythology around this work.

What makes Octopus especially interesting is the network it created, bringing figures from East Harlem’s Latino community, such as Pedro Pietri and Juan Sánchez, into dialogue with artists working across New York like David Hammons, Vito Acconci, Tehching Hsieh. Revisiting the project today allows us to make those connections visible again and to reactivate the collaborative spirit that placed El Museo within a broader avant-garde history. The curator of the show, Zuna Maza, has also connected this history to younger generations working today, including Mev Luna and Joey de Jesus.

El Museo is also presenting the traveling exhibition Teddy Sandoval and the Butch Gardens School of Art. What does bringing it to El Museo add to the conversation?

ST: We really wanted to bring this exhibition [which is traveling through Independent Curators International, and curated by C. Ondine Chavoya and David Evans Frantz] to El Museo because we’re interested in expanding our commitment to queer artists, which is an area where we feel we can still do more. And New York doesn’t very often get to see West Coast artists, so this felt like a really exciting opportunity to bring some of those histories here.

When we brought the show to El Museo, organizing curator Lee Sessions was also able to make some interventions by adding works from our permanent collection and bringing in a few local loans. That allowed us to expand the conversation beyond the original exhibition. Like Octopus, it’s also very much an intergenerational show, and I think that makes it possible to talk about different affinities and parallel histories taking place on the West Coast, the East Coast, and in other regions in between.

Looking ahead, what kinds of histories and conversations do you want El Museo to continue making space for?

ST: Artist-centric, always. That remains at the heart of what we do. We want to keep opening up broader conversations around artists and the histories they bring with them, while also thinking about how to bring more people into those conversations. We’re El Museo del Barrio, but all audiences are welcome, you don’t have to be Latine or Latin American to come in and enjoy and learn from the exhibitions.

We also want to make space for artists and histories that still haven’t received the recognition they deserve, especially across generations. Personally, I’m very committed to showing women artists and to thinking intergenerationally. Amalia Mesa-Bains is a perfect example. She has been working for decades and only received her retrospective now that she is in her 80s. The same can be said for our recent Candida Alvarez show, and even Coco Fusco. I think it’s really important to recognize artists while they’re still here to be part of that conversation.

Como somos una institución más pequeña, también podemos asumir riesgos y responder con mayor rapidez. Creo que eso nos permite mantenernos a la vanguardia en la presentación de artistas e historias que quizá tarden más en entrar en instituciones más grandes. Me siento muy orgullosa de que El Museo pueda ser un primer paso tan importante en la carrera de un artista.

¿Ves la colección permanente de El Museo como una forma de construcción de canon? ¿Qué vacíos está tratando de abordar el museo?

ST: La colección realmente refleja a las comunidades que han dado forma a El Museo. Creo que es realmente importante reconocer a los artistas mientras todavía están aquí para formar parte de esa conversación.

Founded by collectors Kate Lee and Clovis Lima Jr., 603 Arts grew from a shared collection shaped by their Filipino and Brazilian backgrounds and an interest in the cultural connections between Asia and Latin America. Based in New York, the foundation supports emerging artists, particularly those whose practices remain underrepresented within the city’s galleries and institutions.

You first entered the art world as a collector. What drew you to art, and how did it become such an important part of your life?

KL: I always had an interest and a deep love for art, but I don’t think I fully understood the context around it. I didn’t really know what resources were available to me or how to access the art world beyond going to museums.

That started to change when I met a friend, Anne Parke, who organized gallery walks and informal art salons, where gallerists would come and talk about their exhibitions. It was very educational, and I spent quite a bit of time learning before I ever bought my first piece.

Through that, I began to understand how much more there was behind an artwork: the artist’s story, their practice, the materials they use, and why those choices matter. That was the part that really felt like waking up. Suddenly, things started to click, and art became another way of experiencing the world.

That feeling has stayed with me. Now, whenever I visit an artist’s studio, I’m fascinated by how they think and how expansive their ideas can be. I’ve worked in tech and corporate environments for so long that my brain tends to work in a very particular way, so being around artists constantly opens up a different way of thinking.

What prompted the transition from collecting privately to starting 603 Arts?

KL: When I collected for myself, it was for my own home. But I always found myself talking to close friends or anyone who would listen, about what I was discovering. I was excited by what I was learning, and I wanted other people to be part of that experience too.

A lot of my friends still assumed that you had to be a millionaire to collect art or support artists, and I wanted to challenge that perception. So the shift was really from keeping these discoveries within my own collection to thinking about how we could bring more people into the conversation, while also supporting artists we believed in and giving their work greater visibility.

That was really the starting point for 603 Arts. Our supporters are people who are curious about what is new and what is happening now, and hopefully they also develop an interest and personal connection to what has been underrepresented or overlooked in the art world.

What is the central mission of 603 Arts?

KL: At its core, 603 Arts is about bridging cultures and bringing those perspectives into conversation with the broader art world, creating a more inclusive space.

There are a couple of pillars that help us get there. One is organizing our own exhibitions and creating opportunities for artists to show their work. Another is supporting institutional exhibitions that align with our mission. The first was MoMA PS1’s Greater New York, which brought together many Asian and Latin American artists living and working in the city, including artists with more experimental and emerging practices.

Looking ahead, we also want to partner with existing residency programs that already have the infrastructure in place. The idea would be to support an artist through a residency, then create an opportunity for that work to be exhibited through 603 Arts and documented in a catalogue.

Starting a foundation also means taking on a different role within the art ecosystem. What does patronage mean to you in this context?

KL: I think anyone who is an art patron fills a necessary role in the ecosystem. You have people buying historically overlooked artworks, people supporting museums at a high level, galleries, foundations. All of these different actors have to work together to create a strong and supportive environment for artists.

I see 603 Arts as trying to address a particular gap within that network. There are artists across Latin America and Asia producing compelling and important work, but for a gallery, particularly emerging ones, taking on an artist based overseas can involve considerable risk. We understand firsthand how complex and expensive it can be to bring work internationally; there are significant logistical and financial considerations long before a sale is ever made.

In that sense, taking on some of that risk is part of what we do. We want to connect artists with the New York art world and give their work the opportunity to reach new audiences. Ideally, that visibility can open the door to further opportunities. A gallery, curator, or collector might encounter an artist through one of our exhibitions and decide to continue that relationship. If we can help create that next step in an artist’s career, then I think we are doing something meaningful.

The inaugural exhibition of the foundation, The Cataclysm of Binary Star Systems, begins with science fiction but also explores migration and the experience of leaving home. How did that framework develop?

KL: I’ve always had a huge interest in science fiction and the kinds of questions they open up around displacement and survival. That made me draw parallels with immigration and with what my parents went through when they left home and started somewhere new. My partner and his family also immigrated, so that idea of going into the unknown felt very personal to both of us.

The show started to come together through the artists. César López and Leah Ying Lin were really catalysts for the idea. César’s work looks at the Mayan calendar, recordkeeping, and the end of times, while Leah makes kinetic sculptures based on alien forms and environments, and alternate realities. I saw their work and immediately felt that they needed to be in a show together.

I didn’t want it to be only about technology or to have a very stereotypically futuristic aesthetic. I was more interested in asking what leaving home means and what we would take with us if we had to start over: which personal or collective memories, histories and visual languages would feel essential to who we are as humans.

What did you discover by bringing artists from different regions and cultural contexts together?

KL: There were far more similarities than I initially thought between the artists. Across very different contexts, many of them are engaging with cultural, Indigenous or ancestral histories and thinking about how those histories can be carried forward.

For me, that really speaks to what 603 Arts is trying to do: collapse some of the distance between these places and show how much we actually share. I’ve experienced that personally too. My partner grew up in Brazil and I’m Filipino, but there are so many similarities in how we were raised and how our cultures function. I found that both surprising and really comforting, and I’d love for more people to experience that sense of connection.

Where would you like to see 603 Arts five years from now?

KL: I hope that in five years we’re continuing to support exhibitions that really care about cross-cultural exchange and that we’ve been able to create more opportunities for artists along the way.

I’d also love for us to have an artist residency in New York by then. But more than anything, I hope the community around 603 Arts continues to grow and that more people become interested in the artists and ideas we’re bringing together.

Entraste por primera vez al mundo del arte como coleccionista. ¿Qué te atrajo del arte y cómo llegó a convertirse en una parte tan importante de tu vida?

KL: Siempre tuve interés y un profundo amor por el arte, pero no creo que comprendía del todo el contexto que lo rodeaba. En realidad no sabía qué recursos tenía a mi disposición ni cómo acceder al mundo del arte más allá de visitar museos.

Eso empezó a cambiar cuando conocí a una amiga, Anne Parke, que organizaba recorridos por galerías y salones informales de arte, donde galeristas venían a hablar sobre sus exposiciones. Fue muy educativo, y pasé bastante tiempo aprendiendo antes de comprar mi primera obra.

A través de eso, empecé a entender cuánto más había detrás de una obra: la historia del artista, su práctica, los materiales que utiliza y por qué esas decisiones importan. Esa fue la parte que realmente se sintió como un despertar. De repente, las cosas empezaron a encajar, y el arte se convirtió en otra forma de experimentar el mundo.

Esa sensación se ha quedado conmigo. Ahora, cada vez que visito el estudio de un artista, me fascina cómo piensa y lo expansivas que pueden ser sus ideas. He trabajado durante tanto tiempo en entornos tecnológicos y corporativos que mi cerebro tiende a funcionar de una manera muy particular, así que estar rodeada de artistas constantemente me abre a otra forma de pensar.

¿Qué motivó la transición del coleccionismo privado a la creación de 603 Arts?

KL: Cuando coleccionaba para mí, era para mi propia casa. Pero siempre me encontraba hablando con amigos cercanos, o con cualquiera que quisiera escucharme, sobre lo que iba descubriendo. Me entusiasmaba lo que estaba aprendiendo y quería que otras personas también formaran parte de esa experiencia.

Muchos de mis amigos seguían pensando que había que ser millonario para coleccionar arte o apoyar a artistas, y yo quería cuestionar esa percepción. Así que el cambio realmente consistió en pasar de mantener esos descubrimientos dentro de mi propia colección a pensar en cómo podíamos involucrar a más personas en la conversación, al mismo tiempo que apoyábamos a artistas en los que creíamos y dábamos mayor visibilidad a su trabajo.

Ese fue realmente el punto de partida de 603 Arts. Nuestros colaboradores son personas curiosas por lo nuevo y por lo que está sucediendo ahora, y esperamos que también desarrollen un interés y una conexión personal con aquello que ha estado subrepresentado o pasado por alto en el mundo del arte.

¿Cuál es la misión central de 603 Arts?

KL: En esencia, 603 Arts trata de tender puentes entre culturas y poner esas perspectivas en diálogo con el mundo del arte en general, creando un espacio más inclusivo.

Hay un par de pilares que nos ayudan a llegar hasta ahí. Uno es organizar nuestras propias exposiciones y crear oportunidades para que los artistas muestren su trabajo. Otro es apoyar exposiciones institucionales que estén alineadas con nuestra misión. La primera fue Greater New York, de MoMA PS1, que reunió a muchos artistas asiáticos y latinoamericanos que viven y trabajan en la ciudad, incluidos artistas con prácticas más experimentales y emergentes.

De cara al futuro, también queremos colaborar con programas de residencias ya existentes que cuenten con la infraestructura necesaria. La idea sería apoyar a un artista a través de una residencia y, posteriormente, crear una oportunidad para que ese trabajo se exhiba a través de 603 Arts y quede documentado en un catálogo.

Crear una fundación también implica asumir un papel diferente dentro del ecosistema artístico. ¿Qué significa para ti el mecenazgo en este contexto?

KL: Creo que cualquiera que sea mecenas del arte cumple una función necesaria dentro del ecosistema. Hay personas que compran obras históricamente ignoradas, personas que apoyan a museos a gran escala, galerías, fundaciones. Todos estos distintos actores tienen que trabajar juntos para crear un entorno sólido y de apoyo para los artistas.

Veo a 603 Arts como un intento de abordar una brecha particular dentro de esa red. Hay artistas en toda América Latina y Asia produciendo obras relevantes y convincentes, pero para una galería, especialmente una emergente, representar a un artista radicado en el extranjero puede implicar un riesgo considerable. Sabemos de primera mano lo complejo y costoso que puede ser trasladar obras internacionalmente; existen importantes consideraciones logísticas y financieras mucho antes de que se produzca una venta.

En ese sentido, asumir parte de ese riesgo forma parte de lo que hacemos. Queremos conectar a los artistas con el mundo del arte de Nueva York y dar a su trabajo la oportunidad de llegar a nuevas audiencias. Idealmente, esa visibilidad puede abrir la puerta a nuevas oportunidades. Una galería, un curador o un coleccionista puede descubrir a un artista a través de una de nuestras exposiciones y decidir continuar esa relación. Si podemos ayudar a generar ese siguiente paso en la carrera de un artista, entonces creo que estamos haciendo algo significativo.

La exposición inaugural de la fundación, The Cataclysm of Binary Star Systems, parte de la ciencia ficción, pero también explora la migración y la experiencia de dejar el hogar. ¿Cómo se desarrolló ese marco conceptual?

KL: Siempre he tenido un enorme interés por la ciencia ficción y por el tipo de preguntas que plantea en torno al desplazamiento y la supervivencia. Eso me llevó a establecer paralelismos con la inmigración y con lo que vivieron mis padres cuando dejaron su hogar y comenzaron de nuevo en otro lugar. Mi pareja y su familia también emigraron, así que esa idea de adentrarse en lo desconocido resultaba muy personal para ambos.

La exposición empezó a tomar forma a través de los artistas. César López y Leah Ying Lin fueron realmente catalizadores de la idea. La obra de César explora el calendario maya, los sistemas de registro y el fin de los tiempos, mientras que Leah crea esculturas cinéticas basadas en formas y entornos alienígenas, así como en realidades alternativas. Vi sus trabajos e inmediatamente sentí que tenían que formar parte de una exposición juntos.

No quería que se tratara únicamente de tecnología ni que tuviera una estética futurista demasiado estereotipada. Me interesaba más preguntarme qué significa dejar el hogar y qué nos llevaríamos con nosotros si tuviéramos que empezar de nuevo: qué memorias personales o colectivas, historias y lenguajes visuales sentiríamos esenciales para quienes somos como seres humanos.

¿Qué descubriste al reunir a artistas de distintas regiones y contextos culturales?

KL: Había muchas más similitudes entre los artistas de las que imaginaba al principio. En contextos muy distintos, muchos de ellos trabajan con historias culturales, indígenas o ancestrales y reflexionan sobre cómo esas historias pueden trasladarse hacia el futuro.

Para mí, eso habla directamente de lo que 603 Arts intenta hacer: reducir parte de la distancia entre estos lugares y mostrar cuánto compartimos en realidad. Yo también lo he vivido personalmente. Mi pareja creció en Brasil y yo soy filipina, pero existen muchísimas similitudes en la forma en que nos criaron y en cómo funcionan nuestras culturas. Me pareció algo sorprendente y, al mismo tiempo, muy reconfortante, y me encantaría que más personas pudieran experimentar esa sensación de conexión.

¿Dónde te gustaría ver a 603 Arts dentro de cinco años?

KL: Espero que dentro de cinco años sigamos apoyando exposiciones que realmente se preocupen por el intercambio intercultural y que hayamos podido crear más oportunidades para artistas a lo largo del camino.

También me encantaría que para entonces tuviéramos una residencia de artistas en Nueva York. Pero, por encima de todo, espero que la comunidad en torno a 603 Arts siga creciendo y que cada vez más personas se interesen por los artistas y las ideas que estamos reuniendo.
