Founded by collectors Kate Lee and Clovis Lima Jr., 603 Arts grew from a shared collection shaped by their Filipino and Brazilian backgrounds and an interest in the cultural connections between Asia and Latin America. Based in New York, the foundation supports emerging artists, particularly those whose practices remain underrepresented within the city’s galleries and institutions.

In conversation with Art in Latin America, Lee discusses her transition from collecting to patronage, the idea behind 603 Arts and her ambitions for the foundation’s future.

You first entered the art world as a collector. What drew you to art, and how did it become such an important part of your life?

KL: I always had an interest and a deep love for art, but I don’t think I fully understood the context around it. I didn’t really know what resources were available to me or how to access the art world beyond going to museums.

That started to change when I met a friend, Anne Parke, who organized gallery walks and informal art salons, where gallerists would come and talk about their exhibitions. It was very educational, and I spent quite a bit of time learning before I ever bought my first piece.

Through that, I began to understand how much more there was behind an artwork: the artist’s story, their practice, the materials they use, and why those choices matter. That was the part that really felt like waking up. Suddenly, things started to click, and art became another way of experiencing the world.

That feeling has stayed with me. Now, whenever I visit an artist’s studio, I’m fascinated by how they think and how expansive their ideas can be. I’ve worked in tech and corporate environments for so long that my brain tends to work in a very particular way, so being around artists constantly opens up a different way of thinking.

What prompted the transition from collecting privately to starting 603 Arts?

KL: When I collected for myself, it was for my own home. But I always found myself talking to close friends or anyone who would listen, about what I was discovering. I was excited by what I was learning, and I wanted other people to be part of that experience too.

A lot of my friends still assumed that you had to be a millionaire to collect art or support artists, and I wanted to challenge that perception. So the shift was really from keeping these discoveries within my own collection to thinking about how we could bring more people into the conversation, while also supporting artists we believed in and giving their work greater visibility.

That was really the starting point for 603 Arts. Our supporters are people who are curious about what is new and what is happening now, and hopefully they also develop an interest and personal connection to what has been underrepresented or overlooked in the art world.

What is the central mission of 603 Arts?

KL: At its core, 603 Arts is about bridging cultures and bringing those perspectives into conversation with the broader art world, creating a more inclusive space.

There are a couple of pillars that help us get there. One is organizing our own exhibitions and creating opportunities for artists to show their work. Another is supporting institutional exhibitions that align with our mission. The first was MoMA PS1’s Greater New York, which brought together many Asian and Latin American artists living and working in the city, including artists with more experimental and emerging practices.

Looking ahead, we also want to partner with existing residency programs that already have the infrastructure in place. The idea would be to support an artist through a residency, then create an opportunity for that work to be exhibited through 603 Arts and documented in a catalogue.

Starting a foundation also means taking on a different role within the art ecosystem. What does patronage mean to you in this context?

KL: I think anyone who is an art patron fills a necessary role in the ecosystem. You have people buying historically overlooked artworks, people supporting museums at a high level, galleries, foundations. All of these different actors have to work together to create a strong and supportive environment for artists.

I see 603 Arts as trying to address a particular gap within that network. There are artists across Latin America and Asia producing compelling and important work, but for a gallery, particularly emerging ones, taking on an artist based overseas can involve considerable risk. We understand firsthand how complex and expensive it can be to bring work internationally; there are significant logistical and financial considerations long before a sale is ever made.

In that sense, taking on some of that risk is part of what we do. We want to connect artists with the New York art world and give their work the opportunity to reach new audiences. Ideally, that visibility can open the door to further opportunities. A gallery, curator, or collector might encounter an artist through one of our exhibitions and decide to continue that relationship. If we can help create that next step in an artist’s career, then I think we are doing something meaningful.

The inaugural exhibition of the foundation, The Cataclysm of Binary Star Systems, begins with science fiction but also explores migration and the experience of leaving home. How did that framework develop?

KL: I’ve always had a huge interest in science fiction and the kinds of questions they open up around displacement and survival. That made me draw parallels with immigration and with what my parents went through when they left home and started somewhere new. My partner and his family also immigrated, so that idea of going into the unknown felt very personal to both of us.

The show started to come together through the artists. César López and Leah Ying Lin were really catalysts for the idea. César’s work looks at the Mayan calendar, recordkeeping, and the end of times, while Leah makes kinetic sculptures based on alien forms and environments, and alternate realities. I saw their work and immediately felt that they needed to be in a show together.

I didn’t want it to be only about technology or to have a very stereotypically futuristic aesthetic. I was more interested in asking what leaving home means and what we would take with us if we had to start over: which personal or collective memories, histories and visual languages would feel essential to who we are as humans.

What did you discover by bringing artists from different regions and cultural contexts together?

KL: There were far more similarities than I initially thought between the artists. Across very different contexts, many of them are engaging with cultural, Indigenous or ancestral histories and thinking about how those histories can be carried forward.

For me, that really speaks to what 603 Arts is trying to do: collapse some of the distance between these places and show how much we actually share. I’ve experienced that personally too. My partner grew up in Brazil and I’m Filipino, but there are so many similarities in how we were raised and how our cultures function. I found that both surprising and really comforting, and I’d love for more people to experience that sense of connection.

Where would you like to see 603 Arts five years from now?

KL: I hope that in five years we’re continuing to support exhibitions that really care about cross-cultural exchange and that we’ve been able to create more opportunities for artists along the way.

I’d also love for us to have an artist residency in New York by then. But more than anything, I hope the community around 603 Arts continues to grow and that more people become interested in the artists and ideas we’re bringing together.

Entraste por primera vez al mundo del arte como coleccionista. ¿Qué te atrajo del arte y cómo llegó a convertirse en una parte tan importante de tu vida?

KL: Siempre tuve interés y un profundo amor por el arte, pero no creo que comprendía del todo el contexto que lo rodeaba. En realidad no sabía qué recursos tenía a mi disposición ni cómo acceder al mundo del arte más allá de visitar museos.

Eso empezó a cambiar cuando conocí a una amiga, Anne Parke, que organizaba recorridos por galerías y salones informales de arte, donde galeristas venían a hablar sobre sus exposiciones. Fue muy educativo, y pasé bastante tiempo aprendiendo antes de comprar mi primera obra.

A través de eso, empecé a entender cuánto más había detrás de una obra: la historia del artista, su práctica, los materiales que utiliza y por qué esas decisiones importan. Esa fue la parte que realmente se sintió como un despertar. De repente, las cosas empezaron a encajar, y el arte se convirtió en otra forma de experimentar el mundo.

Esa sensación se ha quedado conmigo. Ahora, cada vez que visito el estudio de un artista, me fascina cómo piensa y lo expansivas que pueden ser sus ideas. He trabajado durante tanto tiempo en entornos tecnológicos y corporativos que mi cerebro tiende a funcionar de una manera muy particular, así que estar rodeada de artistas constantemente me abre a otra forma de pensar.

¿Qué motivó la transición del coleccionismo privado a la creación de 603 Arts?

KL: Cuando coleccionaba para mí, era para mi propia casa. Pero siempre me encontraba hablando con amigos cercanos, o con cualquiera que quisiera escucharme, sobre lo que iba descubriendo. Me entusiasmaba lo que estaba aprendiendo y quería que otras personas también formaran parte de esa experiencia.

Muchos de mis amigos seguían pensando que había que ser millonario para coleccionar arte o apoyar a artistas, y yo quería cuestionar esa percepción. Así que el cambio realmente consistió en pasar de mantener esos descubrimientos dentro de mi propia colección a pensar en cómo podíamos involucrar a más personas en la conversación, al mismo tiempo que apoyábamos a artistas en los que creíamos y dábamos mayor visibilidad a su trabajo.

¿Cuál es la misión central de 603 Arts?

KL: En esencia, 603 Arts trata de tender puentes entre culturas y poner esas perspectivas en diálogo con el mundo del arte en general, creando un espacio más inclusivo.

Hay un par de pilares que nos ayudan a llegar hasta ahí. Uno es organizar nuestras propias exposiciones y crear oportunidades para que los artistas muestren su trabajo. Otro es apoyar exposiciones institucionales que estén alineadas con nuestra misión. La primera fue Greater New York, de MoMA PS1, que reunió a muchos artistas asiáticos y latinoamericanos que viven y trabajan en la ciudad, incluidos artistas con prácticas más experimentales y emergentes.

Crear una fundación también implica asumir un papel diferente dentro del ecosistema artístico. ¿Qué significa para ti el mecenazgo en este contexto?

KL: Creo que cualquiera que sea mecenas del arte cumple una función necesaria dentro del ecosistema. Hay personas que compran obras históricamente ignoradas, personas que apoyan a museos a gran escala, galerías, fundaciones. Todos estos distintos actores tienen que trabajar juntos para crear un entorno sólido y de apoyo para los artistas.

Veo a 603 Arts como un intento de abordar una brecha particular dentro de esa red. Hay artistas en toda América Latina y Asia produciendo obras relevantes y convincentes, pero para una galería, especialmente una emergente, representar a un artista radicado en el extranjero puede implicar un riesgo considerable. Sabemos de primera mano lo complejo y costoso que puede ser trasladar obras internacionalmente; existen importantes consideraciones logísticas y financieras mucho antes de que se produzca una venta.

En ese sentido, asumir parte de ese riesgo forma parte de lo que hacemos. Queremos conectar a los artistas con el mundo del arte de Nueva York y dar a su trabajo la oportunidad de llegar a nuevas audiencias. Idealmente, esa visibilidad puede abrir la puerta a nuevas oportunidades. Una galería, un curador o un coleccionista puede descubrir a un artista a través de una de nuestras exposiciones y decidir continuar esa relación. Si podemos ayudar a generar ese siguiente paso en la carrera de un artista, entonces creo que estamos haciendo algo significativo.

La exposición inaugural de la fundación, The Cataclysm of Binary Star Systems, parte de la ciencia ficción, pero también explora la migración y la experiencia de dejar el hogar. ¿Cómo se desarrolló ese marco conceptual?

KL: Siempre he tenido un enorme interés por la ciencia ficción y por el tipo de preguntas que plantea en torno al desplazamiento y la supervivencia. Eso me llevó a establecer paralelismos con la inmigración y con lo que vivieron mis padres cuando dejaron su hogar y comenzaron de nuevo en otro lugar. Mi pareja y su familia también emigraron, así que esa idea de adentrarse en lo desconocido resultaba muy personal para ambos.

La exposición empezó a tomar forma a través de los artistas. César López y Leah Ying Lin fueron realmente catalizadores de la idea. La obra de César explora el calendario maya, los sistemas de registro y el fin de los tiempos, mientras que Leah crea esculturas cinéticas basadas en formas y entornos alienígenas, así como en realidades alternativas. Vi sus trabajos e inmediatamente sentí que tenían que formar parte de una exposición juntos.

No quería que se tratara únicamente de tecnología ni que tuviera una estética futurista demasiado estereotipada. Me interesaba más preguntarme qué significa dejar el hogar y qué nos llevaríamos con nosotros si tuviéramos que empezar de nuevo: qué memorias personales o colectivas, historias y lenguajes visuales sentiríamos esenciales para quienes somos como seres humanos.

¿Qué descubriste al reunir a artistas de distintas regiones y contextos culturales?

KL: Había muchas más similitudes entre los artistas de las que imaginaba al principio. En contextos muy distintos, muchos de ellos trabajan con historias culturales, indígenas o ancestrales y reflexionan sobre cómo esas historias pueden trasladarse hacia el futuro.

Para mí, eso habla directamente de lo que 603 Arts intenta hacer: reducir parte de la distancia entre estos lugares y mostrar cuánto compartimos en realidad. Yo también lo he vivido personalmente. Mi pareja creció en Brasil y yo soy filipina, pero existen muchísimas similitudes en la forma en que nos criaron y en cómo funcionan nuestras culturas. Me pareció algo sorprendente y, al mismo tiempo, muy reconfortante, y me encantaría que más personas pudieran experimentar esa sensación de conexión.

¿Dónde te gustaría ver a 603 Arts dentro de cinco años?

KL: Espero que dentro de cinco años sigamos apoyando exposiciones que realmente se preocupen por el intercambio intercultural y que hayamos podido crear más oportunidades para artistas a lo largo del camino.

También me encantaría que para entonces tuviéramos una residencia de artistas en Nueva York. Pero, por encima de todo, espero que la comunidad en torno a 603 Arts siga creciendo y que cada vez más personas se interesen por los artistas y las ideas que estamos reuniendo.

Edgardo T. Larregui Rodríguez has been active as a Puerto Rican artist and cultural organizer for more than three decades.

Through artworks, installations, happenings, and community-based projects, he subverts public spaces, traditions, and issues such as geogentrification. His first solo exhibition in 15 years, “Respirando Cielo”, opened at Sabroso! on August 27, 2026, in Santurce, Puerto Rico. We visited his studio before the inauguration to discuss his career and artistic proposals.

Ana Hilda Figueroa is an independent curator, art historian, and critic based in San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, and New York. Her research focuses on contemporary art, memory, affect, and visual culture, including ecology and sports. She focuses on communities in the Caribbean, Latin America, and the United States. Her criticism has been published in ArtNexus, Revista Plástica, and CENTRO, among others. She has curated exhibitions at Galería La QuNa, The Latinx Project, and Taller Boricua. Her past collaborations include the University of Puerto Rico, the Baker Museum, the Guggenheim Museum, the Smithsonian Institution, and private collections, among others. She earned a master’s degree in Latin American and Caribbean Studies and an advanced certificate in Museum Studies from New York University (2025), as well as a bachelor’s degree in Art History from UPR-RP (2021).

Your studio is filled with sketches and documentation. Could you tell us about some of the works?

EL: Yes! There is an area dedicated to Coco D’ Oro (1998), a nonprofit organization focused on the importance of art in society through workshops and cultural activities. Dr. Recao (2003) was a project involving the collection of recao seeds, a medicinal and culinary plant in Puerto Rico, to send them to New York and plant them in community gardens and cracks in the streets. La Vía Histórica (2024) was a site-specific installation in which I replaced the light bulbs of a building to trace the railway lines. The building is located where the train cleaning and maintenance workshops operated until operations ceased in 1953. Within the context of industrialization, it is also a tribute to artists working with light, such as Félix González-Torres, Frank J. Malina, and Dan Flavin.

Grimanesa Amorós works with light as a medium to create immersive sculptural installations. Presented across a range of architectural contexts internationally, her works often respond directly to the environments they inhabit.

In this conversation, Amorós discusses how her Peruvian heritage has shaped her practice, her first encounters with light as a medium, and the ways architecture and place inform her installations. She also reflects on public art, audience interaction, and the different interpretations that emerge when people encounter her work.

You grew up in Peru and travelled extensively throughout the country from a young age. How has that early experience of moving through such different landscapes shaped you and how has it influenced your practice?

GA: Peru has always been a source of inspiration for me; its biodiversity fascinates me. From north to south and east to west, the country’s landscape changes. I have always seen nature as perfection; it is the basis of my practice and a major influence on my work. The ability to adapt is important because art shifts and changes and then becomes a work of art.

Before light became such a central part of your work, were you working with other mediums? How did you first begin experimenting with light, and what made you continue working with it?

GA: Before becoming a sculptor who uses light as a medium, I worked with video, paint, and paper, but always in a sculptural way. Light became my main focus due to a life-changing trip to Iceland in 2001. Initially, I went to study the birds, always amazed by migration patterns, but while I was there, I was lucky to experience the Northern Lights. I was amazed and thought, “If only I could share the light with others, wouldn’t it be amazing?” I didn’t take any photos; I just immersed myself in the moment, in awe of nature’s perfection.

Light is ephemeral, a phenomenon that everyone can understand, but it’s how you express light with others that changes its definition and purpose. It took me a long time to develop my visual language with light. My artwork aims to express light differently, and my favorite part is standing at one of my exhibitions or public works and hearing people discuss the art; what they confirm or perceive depends on their experience, and the beauty lies in light’s ability to create community and conversation.

You describe your works as sculptures rather than projections or light effects. What does it mean for you to treat light as a sculptural material, and what possibilities or limitations does it introduce into the work?

GA: The works are sculptures, and even in bright light, they don’t solely rely on darkness or light; the artwork and light are one.

Each work has a reason and has a purpose. I don’t do projections or light effects; they are not adornments. They are self-expression, a piece of me sharing with the world; I borrow light and play with it in my sculptures. I don’t believe in limitations, just a “constant romance with the unknown,” as I like to say.

Do colours carry fixed meanings for you, or does their significance change according to the architecture, location, and cultural context of each project?

GA: It is dependent on the project and environment. All my lighting sequences are created on-site, live; nothing is preset. The environment in which the pieces live is what inspires the color and energy of the work. For example, the sequence for AMPLEXUS was inspired by the strong sunsets of the Saudi desert. PASSAGE in Istanbul for Contemporary Istanbul’s 20th Anniversary and The Peninsula Hotel: the sequence was inspired by Türkiye’s flag and the hustle and bustle; the city’s energy inspired the sequence’s movement. For my piece RADIANCE with the LA PHIL, I used many moments of golden tones to represent Prometheus’s fire and Viracocha’s connection to light and creation.

Your works often enter spaces with very strong architectural identities. How does a site transform the work you initially imagine? Do you see architecture as a collaborator or as something the work has to challenge?

GA: I do not see challenges, just me “living in a constant romance with the unknown.” I see them as opportunities to remain curious and creative. Architecture, to me, plays an important role in creating site-specific work, as the piece becomes one with the architecture; it can inform the light sequence, how people move through the space, and how the artwork encapsulates it.

Do you ever arrive at a site with one idea and find that the architecture forces you to rethink or abandon it completely?

GA: Luckily, I am always prepared. The only time I changed my concept due to architectural limitations was for my work, THE MIRROR CONNECTION, at the CAFA Art Museum in Beijing. I had to change my visual concept completely after learning on-site that Arata Isozaki did not allow any drilling in the floors or walls. Still, we made it happen, and it turned out to be a wonderful piece and reminded me that nothing is impossible.

With Uros House, you brought a reference to Lake Titicaca and the traditional use of totora reeds into Times Square, one of the most technologically saturated spaces in the world. What interested you in creating a dialogue between those very different environments?

GA: New York is where I established myself as an artist. Times Square was a place of inspiration for me in the ’80s; it was one of the first places I stopped when I came to the city. To have a piece there was always a dream, and it came true. Bringing a reference from Peru into that space brought two parts of my life together: my Peruvian heritage and the importance of bringing awareness to the preservation of the Uros culture, and connecting with Times Square, which represented New York, the city where I evolved as an artist.

You have shared with us that you sometimes stand among visitors without telling them you are the artist so you can listen to their reactions. What have you learned about your own work by hearing people interpret it without knowing you are there?

GA: I learned that people are very imaginative, and some are curious, and many are both.

Everyone has a different interpretation of the work and interest in it. The engineers, for example, want to know how the art was made; others are more curious about the why; some go to read the statement, while others immerse themselves. It’s the beauty of living in a constant romance with the unknown; each time, it’s different.

Much of your work exists in public or semi-public spaces. What interests you about placing art in places where people can encounter it unexpectedly, outside the traditional museum or gallery setting?

GA: Art can be individual and communal; it is both. Public space is where light can be shared with others at its maximum, and that is what I have always wanted to do with my artwork: share with others and express what I have to say.

Art is fuel for the mind, and creativity exists in all fields. Public art allows someone who may never walk into a museum or gallery to experience art unexpectedly. Some people don’t feel comfortable in those environments, but making art public makes it approachable. Maybe they are going to work, or they are with their children; maybe they give me only two seconds of their time, and I get them to stop, think, feel inspired, and connect with the artwork. In public spaces, the younger generation can connect with the artwork, push their imagination, and feel inspired to have something to share and say with the world.

Antes de que la luz se convirtiera en una parte tan central de tu trabajo, ¿trabajabas con otros medios? ¿Cómo comenzaste a experimentar con la luz y qué te llevó a seguir trabajando con ella?

GA: Las obras son esculturas y, aun con mucha luz, no dependen únicamente de la oscuridad o de la luz; la obra y la luz son una sola cosa.

Cada obra tiene una razón y un propósito. No hago proyecciones ni efectos de luz; no son adornos. Son una forma de expresión, una parte de mí que comparto con el mundo. Tomo prestada la luz y juego con ella en mis esculturas. No creo en las limitaciones, solo en un “romance constante con lo desconocido”, como me gusta decir.

¿Los colores tienen significados fijos para ti o su significado cambia según la arquitectura, la ubicación y el contexto cultural de cada proyecto?

GA: Depende del proyecto y del entorno. Todas mis secuencias de iluminación se crean in situ, en vivo; nada está preestablecido. El entorno en el que viven las piezas es lo que inspira el color y la energía de la obra. Por ejemplo, la secuencia de AMPLEXUS estuvo inspirada en los intensos atardeceres del desierto saudí. En PASSAGE, en Estambul, para el 20.º aniversario de Contemporary Istanbul y The Peninsula Hotel, la secuencia estuvo inspirada en la bandera de Türkiye y en el bullicio; la energía de la ciudad inspiró el movimiento de la secuencia. Para mi pieza RADIANCE con LA PHIL, utilicé muchos momentos de tonos dorados para representar el fuego de Prometeo y la conexión de Viracocha con la luz y la creación.

Tus obras suelen ocupar espacios con identidades arquitectónicas muy marcadas. ¿Cómo transforma un lugar la obra que imaginas inicialmente? ¿Ves la arquitectura como una colaboradora o como algo que la obra tiene que desafiar?

GA: No veo desafíos, solo a mí misma “viviendo en un romance constante con lo desconocido”. Los veo como oportunidades para mantenerme curiosa y creativa. Para mí, la arquitectura desempeña un papel importante en la creación de obras específicas para un lugar, ya que la pieza se vuelve una con la arquitectura; puede influir en la secuencia de luz, en cómo las personas se mueven por el espacio y en cómo la obra lo encapsula.

¿Alguna vez llegas a un lugar con una idea y descubres que la arquitectura te obliga a replantearla o abandonarla por completo?

GA: Por suerte, siempre estoy preparada. La única vez que cambié mi concepto debido a limitaciones arquitectónicas fue para mi obra THE MIRROR CONNECTION, en el CAFA Art Museum de Pekín. Tuve que cambiar completamente mi concepto visual después de enterarme, ya estando en el lugar, de que Arata Isozaki no permitía perforar los suelos ni las paredes. Aun así, lo hicimos posible, terminó siendo una pieza maravillosa y me recordó que nada es imposible.

Con Uros House, llevaste una referencia al lago Titicaca y al uso tradicional de la totora a Times Square, uno de los espacios más saturados tecnológicamente del mundo. ¿Qué te interesaba de crear un diálogo entre esos entornos tan diferentes?

GA: Nueva York es donde me consolidé como artista. Times Square fue un lugar de inspiración para mí en los años 80; fue uno de los primeros lugares en los que me detuve cuando llegué a la ciudad. Tener una pieza allí siempre fue un sueño, y se hizo realidad. Llevar una referencia de Perú a ese espacio unió dos partes de mi vida: mi herencia peruana y la importancia de generar conciencia sobre la preservación de la cultura Uros, y conectarlas con Times Square, que representaba a Nueva York, la ciudad donde evolucioné como artista.

Nos has contado que a veces te sitúas entre los visitantes sin decirles que eres la artista para poder escuchar sus reacciones. ¿Qué has aprendido sobre tu propia obra al escuchar a las personas interpretarla sin saber que estás allí?

GA: Aprendí que las personas son muy imaginativas, algunas son curiosas y muchas son ambas cosas.

Todos tienen una interpretación diferente de la obra y un interés distinto en ella. Los ingenieros, por ejemplo, quieren saber cómo se hizo el arte; otros sienten más curiosidad por el porqué; algunos van a leer el texto, mientras que otros se sumergen en la experiencia. Es la belleza de vivir en un romance constante con lo desconocido; cada vez es diferente.

Gran parte de tu obra existe en espacios públicos o semipúblicos. ¿Qué te interesa de situar el arte en lugares donde las personas pueden encontrárselo inesperadamente, fuera del contexto tradicional del museo o la galería?

GA: El arte puede ser individual y colectivo; es ambas cosas. El espacio público es donde la luz puede compartirse con los demás al máximo, y eso es lo que siempre he querido hacer con mi obra: compartir con los demás y expresar lo que tengo que decir.

El arte es combustible para la mente, y la creatividad existe en todos los ámbitos. El arte público permite que alguien que quizá nunca entraría en un museo o una galería experimente el arte de manera inesperada. Algunas personas no se sienten cómodas en esos entornos, pero hacer que el arte sea público lo vuelve accesible. Tal vez van camino al trabajo o están con sus hijos; quizá solo me dan dos segundos de su tiempo, y consigo que se detengan, piensen, se sientan inspirados y conecten con la obra. En los espacios públicos, las generaciones más jóvenes pueden conectar con la obra, impulsar su imaginación y sentirse inspiradas a tener algo que compartir y decirle al mundo.

Jess Vieira’s practice moves between the psychic and the physical, exploring the body as a site of transformation and connection with the natural world.

In this conversation, we trace the beginnings of her relationship with painting and consider how her background in art therapy and literature has shaped her practice. She also reflects on the role of drawing, her approach to color and the ideas currently guiding her work, from metamorphosis to estuaries and states of transition.

When did painting first become part of your life and what drew you to it?

JV: I have always felt that art was my true way of expressing being alive, but painting specifically began for me as a tool for healing.

I started painting with watercolors to process my thoughts and emotions during periods of depression. The more I painted, the better I felt. Little by little, the practice expanded until it transformed from a coping mechanism into my profession and my purpose.

What tends to set a painting in motion now? Does it begin with an image, a memory, a sensation, or a color?

JV: It usually begins with an emotion that turns into a physical sensation or the activation of memories imprinted on the body. It feels like images slowly organizing themselves inside a specific part of me. Sometimes it comes through meditation, and when it happens, it is more about color.

Drawing and painting hold distinct places in my process. Sketches don’t have color until I begin painting; I love how drawing allows me to solve things, much like writing does. The pencil dances across the paper without commitment, yet at the same time, it leaves me feeling aligned and grounded. Canvas and oil paint are entirely different; I go deeper, and the layers become mysterious even to myself. Drawing helps me understand things, while painting liberates emotions. Even if a painting begins with a sketched image, my process remains completely intuitive and gesture-driven.

Your work explores the entanglement between the psychic world and living nature. What interests you about bringing those two spaces together?

JV: I am deeply interested in breaking the illusion that we are separate from nature. We are one.

Art is essential to integrating human psychic developments with the material world because it assumes different manifestations; it is vital to understand the influence of how everything works together. How we feel or what we believe directly shapes our attitudes, determining whether we integrate into an ecosystem or not. If we are at constant war within our inner world or body, everything external feels like a threat. When we are balanced within our inner worlds and communities, we begin collaborating to keep life safe; there is no separation.

I realized our bodies share a common matrix with the natural world; that is why the shapes seem so similar. Bringing these spaces together allows me to express our individual and collective connections, showing that our deepest feelings and basic needs exist in pure symbiosis with ecological elements. It is visual and spiritual.

Your recent paintings feel much more fluid than some of your earlier figurative work. The body is still present, but it seems to merge with the landscape around it. What led you towards that shift?

JV: This shift was very natural. As we change, the work changes, though an essential core always remains.

The body is still present, but its shape is undergoing metamorphosis. I see these as metamorphosing bodies that don’t carry the obligation of being rigidly identified. I want these bodies to transcend individuality without excluding it. Merging with the landscape is the organic evolution of that vision; it visually represents that we are not separate from our environment. But when I am working, none of these fusions between body and landscape are provoked; they just happen.

Colour feels very active in your paintings. How do you arrive at your palette? Is it intuitive, or do certain colours carry specific associations for you?

JV: My color choices are highly intuitive. I confess that sometimes I try to maintain a planned palette when I start, but it constantly shifts along the way, unless the entire idea stems directly from color itself.

For instance, in a painting called Rio Interior, the concept arrived when a friend mentioned that if we cover our ears, we can listen to the flow of our blood. I painted mine using only blue and red. While these choices reflect a resonance between absence and saturation, I believe these rational thoughts only come after the work is finished; thinking too much during the process feels like pollution.

You trained in art therapy and studied Literature, later specialising in Brazilian Studies. How have these different fields informed your practice as a painter?

JV: Art therapy gives me the opportunity to contribute to the lives of others, mainly other women. Today, I dedicate part of my time to leading sessions for individuals and groups. Sharing art, listening, and witnessing the psychic process unfold in others feels like a true blessing, and it endlessly broadens my vision of other universes. Naturally, this feeds into my work. Recently, I led a workshop I developed called Corpos Botânicos at a high school in Itaparica, an island in Bahia. It was deeply meaningful to work with teenagers at a stage of life that holds so much emotion and requires such tender attention.

My other academic pursuits stem from an innate curiosity that will always be a part of me. I even find myself wanting to study biology next, and perhaps one day I will! I believe we have many ways of feeding our creativity and sharing it. At the moment, I’ve published texts with Mandala Lunar in Spain, France, Austria, Germany, Japan, and here in Brazil. I’m proud and having a great time with something new that I never expected when I studied Literature.

You have recently become interested in estuaries. What is it about that threshold that resonates with you?

JV: Estuaries are fascinating because they are ultimate zones of transition, a spiritual place: the encounter of waters and spiritual mothers and what they bring with them, where fresh water meets the ocean, and where different ecosystems and forces merge.

This threshold resonates perfectly with my interest in metamorphosing bodies and symbiosis. An estuary is a place of constant transformation and fluidity, much like how I treat the canvas: liquefying paint, balancing densities, and exploring the exact meeting point between the internal psychic world and external living nature. It is a crossroads where water renews and transforms everything.

What are you working through at the moment? Are there particular ideas or questions occupying you right now?

JV: Right now, I am thinking less and doing more through my paintings and my body. To me, it feels like an ancestral blessing to be grounded enough internally to experiment with healing things I don’t have names for yet, and perhaps never will. I initially started painting to heal myself and keep myself alive, but when I became a professional artist, I temporarily forgot that and began worrying about fleeting, external things that don’t truly matter to my inner world. Now, I can see the work as something far larger than those anxieties, allowing it to simply be what it needs to be.

This mindset allows me to reclaim my investigations into the biological body’s structures across macro and microscopic dimensions, interweaving connected ecosystems. I am experimenting with tensions between the scarcity of matter and accumulated density, balancing saturation and desaturation, painting with fabrics instead of brushes, and contrasting liquefied oil with thick accumulations that form centers of attraction for bodies in metamorphosis. I am doing what I need to do.

En esta conversación, repasamos los inicios de su relación con la pintura y analizamos cómo su formación en arteterapia y literatura ha marcado su práctica. Además, reflexiona sobre el papel del dibujo, su enfoque del color y las ideas que actualmente guían su obra, desde la metamorfosis hasta los estuarios y los estados de transición.

¿Cuándo empezó la pintura a formar parte de tu vida y qué fue lo que te atrajo de ella?

JV: Siempre he sentido que el arte era mi verdadera forma de expresar el hecho de estar viva, pero la pintura, en particular, comenzó para mí como una herramienta de sanación.

Empecé a pintar con acuarelas para procesar mis pensamientos y emociones durante periodos de depresión. Cuanto más pintaba, mejor me sentía. Poco a poco, la práctica fue creciendo hasta transformarse de un mecanismo para sobrellevar esos momentos en mi profesión y mi propósito.

¿Qué suele poner en marcha una pintura para ti ahora? ¿Empieza con una imagen, un recuerdo, una sensación o un color?

JV: Suele comenzar con una emoción que se transforma en una sensación física o en la activación de recuerdos impresos en el cuerpo. Es como si las imágenes fueran organizándose lentamente dentro de una parte específica de mí. A veces surge a través de la meditación y, cuando sucede, tiene más que ver con el color.

El dibujo y la pintura ocupan lugares distintos dentro de mi proceso. Los bocetos no tienen color hasta que empiezo a pintar; me encanta cómo el dibujo me permite resolver cosas, de una manera muy parecida a la escritura. El lápiz danza sobre el papel sin compromiso y, al mismo tiempo, me hace sentir alineada y con los pies en la tierra. El lienzo y la pintura al óleo son completamente distintos; ahí voy más profundo y las capas se vuelven misteriosas incluso para mí. El dibujo me ayuda a comprender las cosas, mientras que la pintura libera emociones. Aunque una pintura comience con una imagen esbozada, mi proceso sigue siendo completamente intuitivo y guiado por el gesto.

Tu obra explora el entrelazamiento entre el mundo psíquico y la naturaleza viva. ¿Qué te interesa de reunir esos dos espacios?

JV: Me interesa profundamente romper con la ilusión de que estamos separados de la naturaleza. Somos uno.

El arte es esencial para integrar los procesos psíquicos humanos con el mundo material, porque asume distintas manifestaciones; es vital comprender la influencia de cómo todo funciona en conjunto. Cómo nos sentimos o aquello en lo que creemos moldea directamente nuestras actitudes y determina si nos integramos o no en un ecosistema. Si estamos en guerra constante con nuestro mundo interior o con nuestro cuerpo, todo lo externo se percibe como una amenaza. Cuando encontramos equilibrio dentro de nuestros mundos interiores y nuestras comunidades, empezamos a colaborar para preservar la vida; no hay separación.

Me di cuenta de que nuestros cuerpos comparten una matriz común con el mundo natural; por eso las formas parecen tan similares. Reunir estos espacios me permite expresar nuestras conexiones individuales y colectivas, mostrando que nuestros sentimientos más profundos y nuestras necesidades básicas existen en pura simbiosis con elementos ecológicos. Es algo visual y espiritual.

Tus pinturas recientes se sienten mucho más fluidas que algunas de tus primeras obras figurativas. El cuerpo sigue estando presente, pero parece fundirse con el paisaje que lo rodea. ¿Qué te llevó hacia ese cambio?

JV: Este cambio fue muy natural. A medida que cambiamos nosotros, cambia la obra, aunque siempre permanece un núcleo esencial.

El cuerpo sigue estando presente, pero su forma atraviesa una metamorfosis. Veo estos cuerpos como cuerpos en transformación que no cargan con la obligación de estar rígidamente identificados. Quiero que trasciendan la individualidad sin excluirla. Fundirse con el paisaje es la evolución orgánica de esa visión; representa visualmente que no estamos separados de nuestro entorno. Pero cuando estoy trabajando, ninguna de estas fusiones entre cuerpo y paisaje es provocada; simplemente suceden.

El color se siente muy activo en tus pinturas. ¿Cómo llegas a tu paleta? ¿Es algo intuitivo o hay ciertos colores que tienen asociaciones específicas para ti?

JV: Mis elecciones de color son profundamente intuitivas. Confieso que a veces intento mantener una paleta planificada al comienzo, pero cambia constantemente durante el proceso, salvo que toda la idea surja directamente del propio color. Por ejemplo, en una pintura llamada Rio Interior, el concepto apareció cuando una amiga mencionó que, si nos tapamos los oídos, podemos escuchar el flujo de nuestra sangre. Pinté la mía utilizando únicamente azul y rojo. Aunque estas decisiones reflejan una resonancia entre ausencia y saturación, creo que esos pensamientos racionales solo aparecen una vez terminada la obra; pensar demasiado durante el proceso se siente como una forma de contaminación.

Te formaste en arteterapia y estudiaste Literatura, y más tarde te especializaste en Estudios Brasileños. ¿Cómo han influido estos distintos campos en tu práctica?

JV: La arteterapia me da la oportunidad de contribuir a la vida de otras personas, principalmente de otras mujeres. Hoy dedico parte de mi tiempo a dirigir sesiones individuales y grupales. Compartir el arte, escuchar y ser testigo de cómo se despliega el proceso psíquico en otras personas se siente como una verdadera bendición, y amplía constantemente mi visión de otros universos. Naturalmente, esto alimenta mi trabajo. Recientemente dirigí un taller que desarrollé, llamado Corpos Botânicos, en una escuela secundaria de Itaparica, una isla de Bahía. Fue profundamente significativo trabajar con adolescentes en una etapa de la vida que contiene tantas emociones y requiere una atención tan delicada.

Mis otros intereses académicos nacen de una curiosidad innata que siempre formará parte de mí. Incluso me encuentro pensando que quisiera estudiar biología a continuación, ¡y quizá algún día lo haga! Creo que existen muchas maneras de alimentar nuestra creatividad y compartirla. Actualmente he publicado textos con Mandala Lunar en España, Francia, Austria, Alemania, Japón y aquí, en Brasil. Estoy orgullosa y disfrutando muchísimo de algo nuevo que nunca imaginé cuando estudiaba Literatura.

Recientemente te has interesado por los estuarios. ¿Qué hay en ese umbral que resuena contigo?

JV: Los estuarios me fascinan porque son zonas de transición por excelencia, un lugar espiritual: el encuentro de las aguas y de las madres espirituales y de aquello que traen consigo, donde el agua dulce se encuentra con el océano y donde distintos ecosistemas y fuerzas convergen.

Este umbral resuena perfectamente con mi interés por los cuerpos en metamorfosis y la simbiosis. Un estuario es un espacio de transformación y fluidez constantes, muy parecido a la manera en que trato el lienzo: licuando la pintura, equilibrando densidades y explorando el punto exacto de encuentro entre el mundo psíquico interior y la naturaleza viva exterior. Es una encrucijada donde el agua renueva y transforma todo.

¿Qué estás explorando en este momento? ¿Hay ideas o preguntas particulares que estén ocupando tu atención?

JV: Ahora mismo estoy pensando menos y haciendo más a través de mis pinturas y de mi cuerpo. Para mí, se siente como una bendición ancestral estar lo suficientemente arraigada interiormente como para experimentar con la sanación de cosas para las que todavía no tengo nombres, y quizá nunca los tenga. Al principio empecé a pintar para sanarme y mantenerme viva, pero cuando me convertí en artista profesional, lo olvidé temporalmente y comencé a preocuparme por cosas externas y pasajeras que en realidad no importan a mi mundo interior. Ahora puedo ver la obra como algo mucho más grande que esas ansiedades, permitiéndole simplemente ser lo que necesita ser.

Esta forma de pensar me permite retomar mis investigaciones sobre las estructuras del cuerpo biológico a través de dimensiones macro y microscópicas, entretejiendo ecosistemas conectados. Estoy experimentando con tensiones entre la escasez de materia y la densidad acumulada, equilibrando saturación y desaturación, pintando con telas en lugar de pinceles y contrastando óleo licuado con acumulaciones espesas que forman centros de atracción para cuerpos en metamorfosis. Estoy haciendo lo que necesito hacer.

Compañerx (2021-2024), is a multidisciplinary artistic initiative, by photographer and visual artist Camila Falquez, anchored to the creation of the Ley Integral Tras, Ya!, a trailblazing proposed legislation, presented to the Colombian congress on July 31st 2024, that aims to materialize the rights, needs, and dreams of trans and non-binary people in Colombia. However, amid the country’s complex political and social landscape, the future of the bill remains uncertain.

There are four posters available, starting at $50, with 100% of the proceeds donated directly to support trans communities in Colombia’s Pacific region that have been among those most affected by the earthquake and with whom the project has a close relationship.

Juan Arango Palacios and Manuela Garcia: Poster Sale

Colombian artists Juan Arango Palacios and Manuela Garcia are each offering a poster featuring their work, starting at $20, with 100% of the proceeds from the sales going toward earthquake relief efforts in Colombia.

AGAC (Colombian Association of Art Galleries): Arte por Colombia

Fifteen Colombian galleries and more than ninety artists have come together for an online benefit sale supporting communities affected by the earthquake.

100% percent of the proceeds from each work sold will be donated and transferred directly to the Colombian Red Cross, Presentes Corporación, or Manos Visibles in Chocó to support emergency response and humanitarian relief efforts.

Originally organized by artists Catalina Pardo and Cristobal Ochoa to support earthquake relief efforts in Venezuela, the initiative has now been extended to Colombia. Participating artists donate works for sale, with a catalogue available on Instagram featuring pieces priced under $1,500.

Each work is offered at a discount of 30% or more from its usual price, and 100% of the proceeds from every sale will be donated to support those affected by the earthquake.

Camila Falquez en colaboración con Delicia Studio y Liga de Salud Trans: Venta de pósters Compañerx

Compañerx (2021–2024) es una iniciativa artística multidisciplinaria de la fotógrafa y artista visual Camila Falquez, vinculada a la creación de la Ley Integral Trans, ¡Ya!, una propuesta legislativa pionera presentada ante el Congreso de Colombia el 31 de julio de 2024, cuyo objetivo es materializar los derechos, necesidades y aspiraciones de las personas trans y no binarias en Colombia. Daniel Rey is a Venezuelan artist whose practice moves across objects, installations, and performance. Trained first as an architect in Caracas, Milan, and London, his work translates questions of space and belonging into intimate investigations of masculinity and collective experience.

In this conversation, Daniel speaks about leaving architecture to pursue art and the personal experiences that led him toward performance. He also reflects on returning to Venezuela after years abroad, the feeling of being between places, and how collaboration has become central to the way he builds his work.

“On 24 June 2026, the ground shook violently across Venezuela, a country already facing a severe social and economic crisis. This conversation had taken place only a few days earlier.

The human and material losses are still being assessed. I have been following events from London, over the phone. Seeing the scale of the destruction in La Guaira, a place I often visited as a child, has been heartbreaking. At the same time, this has also been a moment of hope. It has been remarkable to see people across the country come together and find countless ways to help, each contributing however they can.

The emergency is far from over, and rebuilding will take years. Please consider donating. Several verified organisations are working on the ground, including Healing Venezuela, Cáritas Venezuela and World Central Kitchen, among many others.”

You studied architecture in Venezuela before dedicating yourself to the visual arts. What was that transition between both disciplines like?

DR: I studied architecture in Caracas, did a year-long exchange at the Polytechnic University of Milan, and then started working as an architect and designer. I spent five years in Italy, then moved to London and worked in offices such as Foster + Partners and SOM. But I was always making art, even though I had never pursued it full-time.

In 2020, I left my career as an architect, and it wasn’t a comfortable decision. I was on a safe path, in some of the biggest offices in the world, and I left it to start again from zero. I realized I wasn’t pursuing what I felt was my mission: to be an artist. So I went back to study and did a master’s in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins.

But the truth is that I never completely left architecture behind. I changed the object: instead of buildings, I began working with the body, emotions, the space between people. Architecture is still my way of thinking and building, only now I build something else. It gave me a solid foundation to make things happen, and planning before each work has become almost a spiritual practice.

When you started the master’s, what were the questions guiding your practice? How did you move into exploring performance?

DR: At the beginning, the main thing was my identity as a Venezuelan and as a migrant. It was about understanding what it means to be part of that diaspora, how my family and my friends have left Venezuela, and how that forms part of my story. Also understanding and recovering traditions and things that make me Venezuelan. I started working with the body as the place where all of that is stored: memory, ritual, belonging.

In reality, performance scared me, until I mentioned it to my tutor, Amy Clark, and she told me: if you’re afraid, you have to do it. I wanted to explore the ambivalence between masculinity and vulnerability, something very present in machismo in Venezuela and in Latin America. That’s how Collective Cuddles was born, my first performance. We documented it, I applied with it to New Contemporaries, and it was selected. Afterwards, it was presented at Camden Art Centre, Grundy Art Gallery, and Manchester Art Gallery.

Another performance I made was Why Do Swimmers Suddenly Appear? During school, swimming became a refuge when I was dealing with my identity within a super macho and competitive environment. When I entered the water, I could forget all the noise around me.

In the performance, I wanted to work with that contrast: the swimmers entered with me to very revitalizing music, as if they were going to compete. They climbed onto the podium, I said “on your marks, get set, go,” making the audience understand that they were going to jump. But at that moment the music changes. Instead of diving in, they begin to swim vertically, as if you had the camera underwater, and it ended in an embrace. It is a short performance, but it works with that contrast between competition, masculinity, and vulnerability.

How do you think art can open up broader ways of talking about masculinity in Latin American contexts?

DR: I think one can begin from one’s own experience: how you grew up, what things you had to perform depending on your gender. And that doesn’t only apply to men; it also applies to women, who are expected to behave in a very particular way. One of the things about machismo is that you can’t show vulnerability or weakness; you always have to be strong, not show emotions. So I’m interested in exploring how we connect through touch, how we connect emotionally. What interests me about art is that it can go straight to what makes us uncomfortable and stay there, without necessarily resolving it.

In Collective Cuddles, I don’t want to propose an ideal world. I want to put in front of people exactly what machismo forbids: Latino men touching each other with tenderness, without shame, without asking permission. For many people, that is uncomfortable to see, and that is the point. There is no fixed choreography: they can move, sleep, talk to each other. They are always Latino men, part of my community.

For the viewer, I’m not interested in giving an answer, but rather in posing a question: what could it be if this group of people shows affection to each other in a very tender way? What is the line between sexual tension and something that does not quite cross it? Why would something so intimate have to be hidden if it is not necessarily sexual? I’m interested in that slightly uncomfortable moment, in which you wonder whether you are seeing another possible world.

Many of your works, such as Collective Cuddles or Why Do Swimmers Suddenly Appear?, have a collective dimension. What attracts you to working with other people?

DR: I think that comes a lot from architecture. I’m used to work existing in relation to others. In my performances there are almost always between three and five people, and I also collaborate with friends like René Lazovy, who documents the work, or Charles, who composes music for the Nyiha performances.

I’m interested in it not being only me. The idea carries the force, and then there is a group of people who are very good at what they do. There is great satisfaction in building something with many hands. I enjoy being alone in the studio, but that collective energy makes a lot of sense to me.

How has your move to Europe transformed your relationship with your Venezuelan identity?

DR: I think it’s a process that takes years and that I’m still exploring. In fact, I have a series that deals with that subject. Irredeemably Foreign uses old postcards from Venezuela that I have been collecting for many years. They all come loaded with stories on the back from the people who sent them. That object already had a life, and I am rescuing it. The image can be very beautiful, very local, but the text leaves you thinking: there are sad things, things you can identify with, things that are hard to read.

The postcards are combined with phrases from a book about someone who returns to Lebanon after twenty years in Paris, trying to reconcile himself with the idea that he does not feel at home in either place. That idea resonated with me deeply; I felt that the book helped me express ideas I had, but in a very poetic way.

I returned to Venezuela in 2025 after five years without going. Before, I used to go every year, but by then most of my family had left. When I return, I feel alien, a bit like a foreigner; I feel that Venezuela has changed so much and that I have changed too. But when I’m in London, I feel like the most Venezuelan of all. I don’t completely belong to either side, and before that weighed on me; now it is the material.

If someone has never seen your work, how would you describe your practice?

DR: I would describe it as a practice that generates objects, installations, and performances centered on the body, specifically on how the body carries, at the same time, the memory of Venezuela and the physical experience of built space. I’m interested in the tension between two ways of inhabiting architecture: one that comes from Venezuela, where the body lives outwardly, permeable, in contact with others, and another that comes from London, more sealed, more individual. From there, the body becomes a vehicle to explore masculinity and vulnerability through the ritual; how men gather, touch each other, and create community.

What conversations would you like your work to generate in the people who encounter it?

DR: I would be interested in people understanding that we are always changing, that there is no specific place we have to reach. We are always collecting experiences, memories, recollections, and it is in that accumulation that we become sensorially richer.

For me, the idea of connecting more with each other is super important. I think we have been losing community. Religion, for example, gave a lot of that idea of community: establishing connections with strangers who were under the same structure. One of my fears is that, through social media and now artificial intelligence, we are becoming more and more isolated. Everyone is inside their own bubble.

In my art, I’m interested in thinking about how we can meet again, how to establish moments of gathering, of exchange. That is why performance is so important to me: there is nothing more valuable than having a person in front of you, giving you their energy, their sweat, their strength. There is something very powerful in that.

“El 24 de junio de 2026, la tierra se movió con violencia en Venezuela, un país que ya venía atravesando una grave crisis social y económica. Esta conversación tuvo lugar unos días antes.

Las pérdidas humanas y materiales aún se siguen contabilizando. He seguido la situación desde Londres, por teléfono. Ver el nivel de destrucción en La Guaira, adonde iba de niño, es desgarrador. También ha sido un tiempo de esperanza. Ver a todo un país organizarse para ayudar de mil maneras, cada quien desde donde puede, ha sido impresionante.

Si estás leyendo esto, no olvides que la emergencia continúa y que la reconstrucción tomará años. Por favor, dona. Hay organizaciones verificadas trabajando sobre el terreno, como Healing Venezuela, Cáritas Venezuela y World Central Kitchen, entre muchas otras.”

Estudiaste arquitectura en Venezuela antes de dedicarte a las artes visuales. ¿Cómo fue ese tránsito entre ambas disciplinas?

DR: Yo estudié arquitectura en Caracas, hice un año de intercambio en el Politécnico de Milán, y después empecé a trabajar como arquitecto y diseñador. Estuve cinco años en Italia, luego me mudé a Londres y trabajé en oficinas como Foster + Partners y SOM. Pero siempre estaba haciendo arte, aunque nunca lo había perseguido a tiempo completo.

En 2020, dejé mi carrera como arquitecto, y no fue una decisión cómoda. Estaba en un camino seguro, en algunas de las oficinas más grandes del mundo, y lo dejé para empezar otra vez desde cero. Me di cuenta de que no estaba persiguiendo lo que sentía como mi misión: ser artista. Entonces volví a estudiar e hice una maestría en Fine Art en Central Saint Martins.

Pero la verdad es que nunca dejé la arquitectura del todo. Cambié el objeto: en vez de edificios, empecé a trabajar con el cuerpo, las emociones, el espacio entre las personas. La arquitectura sigue siendo mi manera de pensar y de construir, solo que ahora construyo otra cosa. Me dio una base sólida para hacer que las cosas pasen, y planear antes de cada obra se ha vuelto casi una práctica espiritual.

Cuando empezaste la maestría, ¿cuáles eran las preguntas que guiaban tu práctica? ¿Cómo pasaste a explorar la performance?

DR: Al principio lo principal era mi identidad como venezolano y como migrante. Era entender qué significa ser parte de esa diáspora, cómo mi familia y mis amigos han dejado Venezuela, y cómo eso forma parte de mi historia. También entender y recuperar tradiciones y cosas que me hacen venezolano. Empecé a trabajar con el cuerpo como el lugar donde todo eso se guarda: la memoria, el ritual, la pertenencia.

En realidad, la performance me asustaba, hasta que se lo comenté a mi tutora, Amy Clark, y ella me dijo: si tienes miedo, tienes que hacerlo. Yo quería explorar la ambivalencia entre masculinidad y vulnerabilidad, algo muy presente en el machismo en Venezuela y en Latinoamérica. Así nació Collective Cuddles, mi primera performance. La documentamos, apliqué con ella a New Contemporaries y la seleccionaron. Después se presentó en Camden Art Centre, Grundy Art Gallery y Manchester Art Gallery.

Otra performance que realicé fue Why Do Swimmers Suddenly Appear? Durante la escuela, nadar se convirtió en un refugio cuando estaba lidiando con mi identidad dentro de un ambiente súper machista y competitivo. Cuando entraba al agua podía olvidarme de todo el ruido alrededor.

En la performance quería trabajar ese contraste: los nadadores entraban conmigo con una música muy revitalizante, como si fueran a competir. Se subían al podio, yo decía “en sus marcas, listos, fuera”, dándole a entender a la audiencia que iban a saltar. Pero en ese momento cambia la música. En vez de lanzarse, empiezan a nadar verticalmente, como si tuvieras la cámara debajo del agua, y terminaba en un abrazo. Es una performance corta, pero trabaja ese contraste entre competencia, masculinidad y vulnerabilidad.

¿Cómo crees que el arte puede abrir formas más amplias de hablar sobre la masculinidad en contextos latinoamericanos?

DR: Creo que uno puede empezar desde la propia experiencia: cómo creciste, qué cosas tuviste que performar dependiendo de tu género. Y eso no aplica solo a los hombres; también aplica a las mujeres, a quienes se les exige comportarse de una forma muy particular. Una de las cosas del machismo es que no puedes mostrar vulnerabilidad ni debilidad; siempre tienes que ser fuerte, no mostrar emociones. Entonces me interesa explorar cómo conectamos con el tacto, cómo conectamos emocionalmente. Lo que me interesa del arte es que puede ir directo a lo que nos incomoda y quedarse ahí, sin resolverlo necesariamente.

En Collective Cuddles, no quiero proponer un mundo ideal. Quiero poner enfrente de la gente exactamente lo que el machismo prohíbe: hombres latinos tocándose con ternura, sin vergüenza, sin pedir permiso. Para mucha gente eso es incómodo de ver, y ese es el punto. No hay una coreografía fija: se pueden mover, dormir, hablar entre ellos. Siempre son hombres latinos, parte de mi comunidad.

Para el espectador, no me interesa dar una respuesta, sino plantear una pregunta: ¿qué podría ser si este grupo de personas se hace cariño de una manera muy tierna? ¿Cuál es la línea entre la tensión sexual y algo que no llega a cruzarla? ¿Por qué algo tan íntimo tendría que esconderse si no necesariamente es sexual? Me interesa ese momento un poco incómodo, en el que te preguntas si estás viendo otro mundo posible.

Muchas de tus obras, como Collective Cuddles o Why Do Swimmers Suddenly Appear?, tienen una dimensión colectiva. ¿Qué te atrae de trabajar con otras personas?

DR: Creo que eso viene mucho de la arquitectura. Estoy acostumbrado a que el trabajo exista en relación con otros. En mis performances casi siempre hay entre tres y cinco personas, y también colaboro con amigos como René Lazovy, que documenta el trabajo, o Charles, que compone música para las performances Nyiha.

Me interesa que no sea solamente yo. La idea lleva la fuerza y después hay un grupo de personas que hacen muy bien lo que hacen. Hay una satisfacción muy grande en construir algo entre muchas manos. Disfruto estar solo en el estudio, pero esa energía colectiva tiene mucho sentido para mí.

¿Cómo ha transformado tu mudanza a Europa tu relación con tu identidad venezolana?

DR: Creo que es un proceso que lleva años y que sigo explorando. De hecho, tengo una serie que trata ese tema. Irredeemably Foreign usa postales antiguas de Venezuela que colecciono desde hace muchos años. Todas vienen cargadas de historias en la parte posterior de quienes las enviaron. Ese objeto ya tenía una vida y yo lo estoy rescatando. La imagen puede ser muy bella, muy local, pero el texto te deja pensando: hay cosas tristes, cosas con las que te puedes identificar, cosas fuertes de leer.

Las postales se combinan con frases de un libro sobre alguien que regresa al Líbano después de veinte años en París, tratando de reconciliarse con la idea de que no se siente en casa en ninguno de los dos lugares. Esa idea resonó muchísimo conmigo, sentí que el libro me ayudaba a expresar ideas que yo tenía, pero de una manera muy poética.

Yo regresé a Venezuela en 2025 después de cinco años sin ir. Antes iba todos los años, pero ya la mayor parte de mi familia se fue. Cuando regreso me siento ajeno, un poco como un extranjero; siento que Venezuela cambió muchísimo y que yo también cambié. Pero cuando estoy en Londres me siento el más venezolano de todos. No pertenezco completamente a ninguno de los dos lados, y eso antes me pesaba, ahora es el material.

Para quienes nunca han visto tu obra, ¿cómo describirías tu práctica?

DR: Yo la describiría como una práctica que genera objetos, instalaciones y performances centradas en el cuerpo, específicamente en cómo el cuerpo carga al mismo tiempo la memoria de Venezuela y la experiencia física del espacio construido. Me interesa la tensión entre dos formas de habitar la arquitectura: una que viene de Venezuela, donde el cuerpo vive hacia afuera, permeable, en contacto con los otros, y otra que viene de Londres, más sellada, más individual. Desde ahí el cuerpo se convierte en un vehículo para explorar la masculinidad y la vulnerabilidad a través de lo ritual; cómo los hombres se reúnen, se tocan, y hacen comunidad.

¿Qué conversaciones te gustaría que tu obra generara en las personas que la encuentran?

DR: Me interesaría que se entienda que siempre estamos cambiando, que no hay un sitio específico al que tenemos que llegar. Siempre estamos recolectando experiencias, memorias, recuerdos, y es en esa acumulación donde nos volvemos más ricos sensorialmente.

Para mí, la idea de conectar más entre nosotros es súper importante. Creo que hemos ido perdiendo comunidad. La religión, por ejemplo, daba mucho esa idea de comunidad: establecer conexiones con extraños que estaban bajo una misma estructura. Uno de mis miedos es que, a través de las redes sociales y ahora de la inteligencia artificial, nos estamos volviendo cada vez más aislados. Cada quien está dentro de su propia burbuja.

En mi arte me interesa pensar cómo podemos volver a encontrarnos, cómo establecer momentos de reunión, de intercambio. Por eso la performance es tan importante para mí: no hay nada más valioso que tener a una persona enfrente de ti, dándote su energía, su sudor, su fuerza. Hay algo muy poderoso en eso.

This collaboration brings together Espace Brownstone’s more than two decades of experience as a leading space for art from Latin America and the Caribbean in Paris with Art in Latin America’s mission to amplify and strengthen artistic practices from the region.

The residency offers one artist the opportunity to develop their practice, explore new connections, and build collaborations with fellow artists, communities, and institutions within the Parisian art ecosystem. The selected artist will benefit from dedicated time for research and production, a private studio, accommodation, and curatorial support throughout the residency.

Jaime Gili is a Venezuelan artist based in London whose abstract practice draws on the visual culture and urban landscapes of Venezuela. Working across painting, public art, and design, his work explores color, movement, architecture, and the relationship between abstraction and everyday life.

In this interview, Gili reflects on his artistic education in Caracas, Barcelona, and London, the influence of Venezuelan abstraction, his relationship with Caracas, and the ideas behind recent projects including Conuco and his forthcoming book.

“I took part in this interview a few days before the earthquakes. My optimistic tone would not be the same if the interview were taking place now, when I am still struggling to comprehend the tremendous injustice and the pain over so many deaths and losses continues to grow.

Today, I believe this terrible tragedy is the worst of a succession of cycles of hope and unity, followed by brutal blows of despair and loneliness, that we have experienced in Venezuela for several decades. These cycles continue because of my compatriots’ instinctive determination to keep moving forward with a brave face, sustained by faith and optimism, always and despite everything.”

From a very young age, you were constantly drawing. How do you remember those first connections with art?

JG: Without a doubt, from a very young age, making art was what I enjoyed most and, fortunately, my family always supported me. My father, an industrial designer, had a drawing table at home and a beautiful library of art and philosophy; and my mother, who is a seamstress and always had a very active workshop in the houses where we lived, still sews today, at over eighty years old. So I grew up between those two things: straight lines and technical drawing and, on the other hand, the soft curves of pattern-making paper and the colors of fabrics. I grew up drawing and watching people draw and create.

In Caracas, you began by studying design and eventually moved towards painting. What was that journey like, especially in a context where there was no formal school of painting?

JG: It was somewhat circumstantial. In Caracas, there was no formal school of painting at university level, but there was a great school of design: the Instituto de Diseño Fundación Neumann, a kind of tropical Bauhaus with an incredible atmosphere, where architects, historians, and artists taught classes. It was supposed to be a design school, but, in reality, they were training us for a country that did not yet exist: a country that would one day produce furniture, textiles, objects, visual culture. I think that idea of preparing oneself for something that does not yet exist is still very present in Venezuela.

Then I went to Barcelona. There, the education consisted solely of the studio. There was not much contact with the outside world or much hope of changing anything, but that gave me a very serious discipline. That was where I understood that design was not my thing, because in design they generally give you the rules and you have to solve the problem in the most interesting way possible. I wanted to set my own rules and then break them; perhaps that is why I gradually moved towards painting.

When I arrived in London, it was the complete opposite: it was not about the closed studio, but about how you present the work to the outside world, how you make an exhibition, how you explain what you do to the world. In the end, I think everything balanced out very well: on the one hand, the hope and the dream in Venezuela; on the other, the constant work in Barcelona, without expecting external reward; and, finally, London, situating us and presenting us in relation to the world.

Your work has always been connected to abstraction. Where does that relationship come from?

JG: I think the influence comes greatly from my father and his stubborn modernity; then, from the IDD in Caracas, from the professors there, who were very connected to that Venezuelan abstract tradition of the second half of the twentieth century: Alejandro Otero, Gego, Gerd Leufert, Nedo, Soto, Cruz-Diez, Juvenal Ravelo, and many other artists who always cultivated a relationship with design, architecture, and public space.

But my work contains a tension. On the one hand, that period was experiencing the official discourse, which greatly favored kinetic artists for major public commissions. On the other hand, there was a more punk branch, more connected to the street, less interested in a fine, polished finish.

I was always interested in the mixture of those two things. I have always said that those traditions come together in the semi-anonymous paintings on Caracas buses: geometry, the street, color, the popular, and that this is what nourishes me; not one extreme or the other, but the place where they meet.

What visual memories of Caracas continue to appear in your work?

JG: The street is very important. I think there is a way in which we are Caribbean that is different from that of the coastal Caribbean.

That produces something particular: an urban Caribbean within a metropolis like Caracas. It is an intuitive matter; I think there is a way of being Caribbean in an urban context.

In your recent works, there is a very clear relationship with functionality. How are you thinking about that connection?

JG: With that legacy of the tropical Bauhaus I was talking about, I am very interested in art being able to have a function beyond aesthetics: a utility. My latest project has been a screen-printed blind for The Showroom. I realized that, with summers becoming increasingly hot in London, they were going to need to block the sunlight from entering their office spaces, which have an enormous glass roof, and I proposed the blind to them. For the title of the work, I connected the idea to Alexander Calder’s work at the Central University of Venezuela, known as the Nubes de Calder, which has an acoustic function within the hall.

The piece is called Nubes for The Showroom. I am interested in maintaining a thread with that history of integration between art, architecture, and practical use. The forms that appear there come from a series I made in 2010 about the artificial lakes of Parque del Este, in Caracas, designed by a team led by Roberto Burle Marx. It is a park that I enjoyed greatly as a child and continue to enjoy as an adult. It has lakes with very amoeboid forms, and perhaps the curvier part of my work emerged from there, coexisting with the geometric and rectilinear part.

Your recent exhibition, “Conuco,” at Somers Gallery, also opens up a relationship between abstraction and literature. How did that series begin?

JG: In Conuco, a more literary reference appears. One of the series comes from La vorágine, by José Eustasio Rivera. It is a book with very elaborate, very baroque prose, but, when it describes the jungle, you feel that this is the perfect prose for speaking about an aggressive, excessive landscape that forces you to look closely, without distance. Everything is made up of complex and nearby details; you shift your gaze slightly and another universe appears, equally complex and equally close, lying in wait. I wanted to make a painting that resembled that prose. Then there is also the subject of the conuco and a certain formal investigation into the way things grow in the tropics.

That exhibition, in fact, began with a trip to Caracas, visiting a friend’s vegetable garden, the conuco. It was not only the idea of planting and being self-sufficient, although that also has to do with necessity and with recovering ancestral practices. What interested me most was how everything grows in the tropics, that excessive fertility, that abundance, in a space like my friend’s, with a very particular topography. But, although it began there, the subject is global: people who grow what they eat, working the land they have nearby. Everyone has to have some kind of relationship with the earth.

Is there an exhibition that you consider especially important in your career?

JG: I think an important exhibition for me, although little known, was Loop, at Cecilia Brunson Projects, in London. I would not say it was a conclusion, but it was a moment in which I was able to become aware of that legacy and of the thread that my father’s generation constructed and wove. They tried to cut that thread for us, and several incredibly valuable people and private institutions in Venezuela have continued, almost in secret, trying to ensure that it did not break.

That exhibition had to do with the year 1967, which for me was like a peak of our modernity, and the year in which my father arrived in Venezuela. Perhaps the problem began from that point onwards, because of the excess of optimism and the influx of dollars without much control. Venezuela has always had that dream: that oil should not be what is necessary for survival, but rather something extra, something that provides a bonus after a society is already functioning well, as in Norway. But, well, that is a dream.

You have developed an abstract practice from a Latin American context, while living in London. How do you think about that position?

JG: When I was studying at the Royal College of Art, we abstract painters were very few, 3 out of 20, in a group where a more traditional, very English form of figuration predominated, connected to landscape and portraiture. At that moment, it was important to become aware of where I came from and to continue it.

Nostalgia is often discussed from a place of sadness, as though it implied wanting to be somewhere else and being unable to do so. But I have thought a great deal about that idea, and I believe that in London we have built an important Latin American community. We are united by language, but also by the possibility of exchanging references, readings, literature, visual arts. Although we are abroad, we continue learning from one another.

That said, I think it is very important to keep returning and to keep working in our countries. If we do not, nothing makes sense. In Venezuela, all of us who have maintained that thread have the obligation, now more than ever, to keep returning and to do things there alongside the people who stayed, who endured all these years and continued weaving.

What has remained constant in your work, and what has changed over time?

JG: The interest in color has remained constant, although the palette keeps shifting. Perhaps someone studying my work could say that I always use a palette of seven or eight colors, but it would become clear that they are not always the same ones.

There is still a very strong intuitive element, but, after thirty years of work, something accumulates. Experience has to bring some benefit! Intuition begins to move along a path and you arrive at solutions more quickly. You trust that it will lead you to a good place. At the same time, that forces you to remain alert and avoid formulas. The most difficult thing is to break away each time something new appears, not to repeat oneself.

What would you like new generations to understand about the Venezuelan artistic tradition?

JG: I would be satisfied simply if they knew it! Now, everyone is being fed by immediate and short-lived information, not by what happened decades ago. For many children of Latin Americans living abroad, a broader knowledge would help them understand that the contemporary also has roots, in art as much as in history itself.

To conclude, you are working on a new book. What can you tell us about that project?

JG: I am making a book that will be launched in September. It will have two sides: one more connected to the urban and to movement, perhaps more rectilinear, and another more botanical, with the lakes, the conuco, the watercolors, etc. Working with editors has been a very stimulating process. It will include an interview with Pablo León de la Barra, a text by Ramón del Castillo, and another by Torrivilla. The editor is Natalia Valencia Arango.

The publication will be released in Madrid with This Side Up. In September, we will have launches in London; in December, in Caracas; and afterwards we will present it in Madrid and Barcelona. Next year, the project will travel to Buenos Aires, Miami, and other cities.

Jaime Gili es un artista venezolano radicado en Londres cuya práctica abstracta se nutre de la cultura visual y los paisajes urbanos de Venezuela. A través de la pintura, el arte público y el diseño, su obra explora el color, el movimiento, la arquitectura y la relación entre la abstracción y la vida cotidiana.

En esta entrevista, Gili reflexiona sobre su formación artística en Caracas, Barcelona y Londres, la influencia de la abstracción venezolana, su relación con Caracas y las ideas detrás de proyectos recientes, entre ellos Conuco y su próximo libro.

“Realicé esta entrevista pocos días antes de los terremotos, mi tono optimista no sería el mismo si la hubiera hecho ahora, cuando todavía me resulta difícil asimilar la tremenda injusticia y sigue creciendo el dolor por tantas muertes y pérdidas.

Hoy pienso que esta terrible desgracia es la peor dentro de una seguidilla de ciclos de esperanza y unión, seguidos de machetazos de desesperanza y soledad, que vivimos en Venezuela desde hace varias décadas. Ciclos que se encadenan por el empecinamiento natural de mis compatriotas en seguir adelante con buena cara, con fe y optimismo, siempre y a pesar de todo.”

Desde muy pequeño dibujabas constantemente. ¿Cómo recuerdas esos primeros vínculos con el arte?

JG: Sin duda, desde muy pequeño, hacer arte era lo que más me gustaba y, por suerte, mi familia siempre me apoyó. Mi papá, diseñador industrial, tenía una mesa de dibujo en la casa y una linda biblioteca de arte y filosofía; y mi madre, que es costurera y siempre tuvo su taller muy activo en las casas donde vivimos, todavía hoy, con más de ochenta años, sigue cosiendo. Entonces crecí entre esas dos cosas: líneas rectas y dibujo técnico y, por otro lado, las curvas suaves de los papeles de patronaje y los colores de las telas. Crecí dibujando y viendo dibujar y crear.

En Caracas empezaste estudiando diseño y finalmente te moviste hacia la pintura. ¿Cómo fue ese recorrido, especialmente en un contexto donde no había una escuela formal de pintura?

JG: Fue un poco circunstancial. En Caracas no había una escuela formal de pintura con un nivel universitario, pero había una gran escuela de diseño: el Instituto de Diseño Fundación Neumann, una especie de Bauhaus tropical con un ambiente increíble, donde arquitectos, historiadores y artistas daban clases. Se suponía que era una escuela de diseño, pero, en realidad, nos estaban formando para un país que todavía no existía: un país que algún día iba a producir muebles, textiles, objetos, cultura visual. Esa idea de prepararse para algo que todavía no existe creo que sigue muy presente en Venezuela.

Después fui a Barcelona. Allí la educación era solamente el taller. No había mucho contacto con el exterior ni esperanzas de cambiar nada, pero eso me dio una disciplina muy seria. Ahí entendí que lo mío no era el diseño, porque en diseño generalmente te ponen las reglas y tú tienes que resolver el problema de la manera más interesante posible. Yo quería ponerme mis propias reglas para luego romperlas; quizá por eso me acerqué paulatinamente a la pintura.

Al llegar a Londres fue todo lo contrario: no era el taller cerrado, sino cómo vas a presentar el trabajo hacia afuera, cómo haces una exposición, cómo explicas lo que haces al mundo. Al final, creo que todo se balanceó muy bien: por un lado, la ilusión y el sueño en Venezuela; por otro, el trabajo constante en Barcelona, sin esperar recompensa externa; y, finalmente, Londres, ubicándonos y presentándonos en relación con el mundo.

Tu trabajo siempre ha estado vinculado a la abstracción. ¿De dónde viene esa relación?

JG: Creo que la influencia viene mucho de mi padre y su empecinada modernidad; luego, del IDD en Caracas, de los profesores allí, muy conectados con esa tradición abstracta venezolana de la segunda mitad del siglo XX: Alejandro Otero, Gego, Gerd Leufert, Nedo, Soto, Cruz-Diez, Juvenal Ravelo y muchos otros artistas que siempre cultivaron una relación con el diseño, la arquitectura y el espacio público.

Pero mi obra contiene una tensión. Por un lado, esa época estaba experimentando el discurso oficial, que favorecía mucho a los artistas cinéticos para grandes encargos públicos. Por otro lado, había una rama más punk, más vinculada a la calle, menos interesada en el acabado fino y brillante. A mí siempre me interesó la mezcla de esas dos cosas. Siempre he dicho que en las pinturas semianónimas de los autobuses de Caracas se juntan esas tradiciones: la geometría, la calle, el color, lo popular, y que de ahí es que me nutro: no de un extremo ni del otro, sino del lugar donde se encuentran.

¿Qué recuerdos visuales de Caracas siguen apareciendo en tu obra?

JG: La calle es muy importante. Creo que hay una manera nuestra de ser Caribe que es distinta a la del Caribe de costa.

Eso produce algo particular: un Caribe urbano dentro de una metrópoli como Caracas. Es una cuestión intuitiva; creo que hay una manera de ser Caribe en lo urbano.

En tus trabajos recientes aparece una relación muy clara con la utilidad. ¿Cómo estás pensando esa conexión?

JG: Con esa herencia de la Bauhaus tropical de la que hablaba, me interesa mucho que el arte pueda tener una función más allá de la estética: una utilidad. Mi último proyecto ha sido una persiana serigrafiada para The Showroom. Me di cuenta de que, con los veranos cada vez más calurosos en Londres, iban a necesitar tapar la entrada de sol en sus espacios de oficina, que tienen un techo de vidrio enorme, y les propuse la persiana. Para el título de la obra, conecté la idea con la obra de Alexander Calder en la Universidad Central de Venezuela, conocida como las Nubes de Calder, que tiene una función acústica dentro de la sala.

La pieza se llama Nubes for The Showroom. Me interesa mantener un hilo con esa historia de integración entre arte, arquitectura y uso práctico. Las formas que aparecen ahí vienen de una serie que hice en 2010 sobre los lagos artificiales del Parque del Este, en Caracas, diseñado por un equipo liderado por Roberto Burle Marx. Es un parque que disfruté mucho de niño y sigo disfrutando de adulto. Tiene unos lagos con formas muy ameboidales y de ahí salió quizá la parte más curva de mi trabajo, que convive con la parte geométrica y rectilínea.

Tu exposición reciente, “Conuco”, en Somers Gallery, también abre una relación entre abstracción y literatura. ¿Cómo empezó esa serie?

JG: En Conuco aparece una referencia más literaria. Una de las series viene de La vorágine, de José Eustasio Rivera. Es un libro con una prosa muy recargada, muy barroca, pero, cuando describe la selva, sientes que esa es la prosa perfecta para hablar de un paisaje agresivo, excesivo, que te obliga a mirar de cerca, sin distancia. Todo son detalles complejos y cercanos; mueves un poco la mirada y aparece otro universo igual de complejo e igual de cercano, al acecho. Yo quería hacer una pintura que se pareciera a esa prosa. Luego también está el tema del conuco y cierta investigación formal sobre la manera como crecen las cosas en el trópico.

Esa exposición, de hecho, empezó a partir de un viaje a Caracas, visitando el huerto —conuco— de un amigo. No era solo la idea de plantar y ser autosuficiente, aunque eso también tiene que ver con la necesidad y con recuperar prácticas ancestrales. Lo que más me interesaba era cómo crece todo en el trópico, esa fertilidad excesiva, esa abundancia, en un espacio como el de mi amigo, con una orografía muy especial. Pero, aunque empezara ahí, el tema es global: la gente que siembra lo que come, trabajando la tierra que tiene cerca. Todo el mundo tiene que tener alguna relación con la tierra.

¿Hay alguna exposición que consideres especialmente importante en tu trayectoria?

JG: Creo que una exposición importante para mí, aunque poco conocida, fue Loop, en Cecilia Brunson Projects, en Londres. No diría que fue un cierre, pero sí un momento en el que pude darme cuenta de esa herencia y del hilo que la generación de mi padre construyó y tejió. A nosotros nos intentaron cortar ese hilo, y varias personas valiosísimas e instituciones privadas en Venezuela han seguido, casi a escondidas, tratando de que no se rompiera.

Esa exposición tenía que ver con el año 1967, que para mí fue como un pico de nuestra modernidad, y el año en que mi padre llegó a Venezuela. Quizás, a partir de ahí, empezó el problema, por el exceso de optimismo y por la entrada de dólares sin demasiado control. Venezuela siempre ha tenido ese sueño: que el petróleo no sea lo necesario para sobrevivir, sino algo extra, algo que dé un plus después de que una sociedad ya funciona bien, como en Noruega. Pero, bueno, eso es un sueño.

Has desarrollado una práctica abstracta desde un contexto latinoamericano, pero viviendo en Londres. ¿Cómo piensas esa posición?

JG: Cuando estudiaba en el Royal College, éramos muy pocos, 3 de 20, los pintores abstractos en un grupo donde predominaba una figuración más tradicional, muy inglesa, ligada al paisaje y al retrato. En ese momento fue importante darme cuenta de dónde venía y continuarlo.

Muchas veces se habla de la nostalgia desde un lugar triste, como si implicara querer estar en otro sitio y no poder hacerlo. Pero yo le he dado muchas vueltas a esa idea y creo que en Londres hemos construido una comunidad latinoamericana importante. Nos une el idioma, pero también la posibilidad de intercambiar referencias, lecturas, literatura, artes visuales. Aunque estemos fuera, seguimos aprendiendo unos de otros.

Dicho eso, creo que es muy importante seguir volviendo y seguir trabajando en nuestros países. Si no lo hacemos, nada tiene sentido. En Venezuela, todos los que hemos mantenido ese hilo tenemos la obligación, más que nunca, de seguir volviendo y hacer cosas allá junto con la gente que se quedó, que aguantó todos estos años y siguió tejiendo.

¿Qué ha permanecido constante en tu trabajo y qué ha ido cambiando?

JG: El interés por el color ha sido constante, aunque la paleta se va moviendo. A lo mejor, alguien que estudie mi trabajo podría decir que siempre uso una paleta de siete u ocho colores, pero se verá que no son siempre los mismos.

Sigue habiendo una parte intuitiva muy fuerte, pero, después de treinta años de trabajo, algo se acumula. ¡Algún beneficio tiene que traer la experiencia! La intuición empieza a ir por un camino y llegas más rápido a las soluciones. Confías en que te va a llevar a un buen lugar. Al mismo tiempo, eso te obliga a estar alerta y evitar fórmulas. Lo más difícil es romper cada vez que aparece algo nuevo, no repetirse.

¿Qué te gustaría que las nuevas generaciones entendieran sobre la tradición artística venezolana?

JG: ¡Con que la conozcan tengo suficiente! Ahora, todos están siendo alimentados por información inmediata y de corta duración, no por lo que pasó décadas atrás. Para muchos hijos de latinos que viven afuera, un conocimiento más extenso ayudaría a entender que lo contemporáneo también tiene raíces, así en el arte como en la historia misma.

Para cerrar, estás trabajando en un nuevo libro. ¿Qué puedes contar sobre ese proyecto?

JG: Estoy preparando un libro que se lanzará en septiembre. Tendrá dos caras: una más vinculada a lo urbano y al movimiento, quizá más rectilínea, y otra más botánica, con los lagos, el conuco, las acuarelas, etc. Trabajar con los editores ha sido un proceso muy estimulante. Incluirá una entrevista con Pablo León de la Barra, un texto de Ramón del Castillo y otro de Torrivilla. La editora es Natalia Valencia Arango.

La publicación se lanzará en Madrid con This Side Up. En septiembre tendremos presentaciones en Londres; en diciembre, en Caracas; y posteriormente lo presentaremos en Madrid y Barcelona. El próximo año, el proyecto viajará a Buenos Aires, Miami y otras ciudades.

Untold Forms will bring together artists, writers, curators, and creatives from Latin America and its diaspora whose practices give shape to stories, materials, and perspectives that often fall outside dominant narratives and stereotypes of the region.

We seek to engage with what has been overlooked, inherited, dreamed, displaced, or preserved. The call is open for works moving through archives, migration and belonging, intimate histories, ecological memory, unconventional materials, identity politics, and forms of making rooted in specific territories. In doing so, they should expand beyond Latin America as a geographical territory or an identity marker.

Untold Forms proposes a space for practices that resist easy categorization. The publication will be not organized around a single national identity or medium, but around the many ways artists, curators, writers, and cultural workers make visible what has not been fully told, and give form to what dominant systems of art and history have not yet seen.

We particularly encourage submissions from participants without institutional support, and emerging creative and cultural workers.

Sixteen years ago, Javier Calderón founded Somers Gallery with the intention of opening spaces of visibility for Latin American art in London.

Today, as the founder of Paraíso, a new Latin American art fair taking place during London Frieze Week 2026, he expands that commitment into a platform that brings together galleries, artists, institutions, and audiences, while imagining new dialogues between Latin America and regions that have historically remained outside its usual circuits.

In this conversation, Javier tells us how Paraíso came into being and how the fair seeks to operate beyond the commercial space. He also speaks about Mexico as the guest country for this first edition, the importance of including galleries and projects of different scales, and his desire to imagine connections between Latin America and regions such as India and the Middle East.

At what point did you feel it was necessary to create a fair dedicated to Latin American art in London?

JC: From the beginning, 16 years ago, I always wanted to promote Latin American art wherever I was. At first, I focused a lot on Mexican art, and then I thought I was limiting myself, so I expanded into Latin American art.

I think these needs have existed for many years, but there comes a moment when an opportunity appears. For me, that moment is now. I now have enough experience from running Somers Gallery for more than ten years and from having organized festivals that have attracted up to 12,000 people, such as the Day of the Dead festival, in collaboration with the British Library, the Embassy of Mexico, Camden, and local schools.

After the pandemic, everything accelerated and changed. I think we are at a moment in which regions are having new conversations, and this is an opportunity to begin another dialogue between the United Kingdom and Latin America. London is recovering from Brexit and can function as a platform for something bigger.

After so many years working with Somers Gallery, how do you understand London’s artistic ecosystem?

JC: The United Kingdom’s ecosystem is one of the most developed. It is very complex: academic institutions, associations, foundations, grassroots spaces, independent galleries, commercial galleries, auction houses.

It is an incredible ecosystem. It has taken me time to understand it, first through my experience in different institutions in London and later through Somers Gallery. That familiarity with the scene is what now gives me the confidence to create Paraíso.

The word Paraíso has many resonances. Why did you choose that name for a Latin American art fair?

JC: Names are always difficult to choose. For me, Paraíso reflects a little of what is expected of Latin America: that paradisiacal landscape, a place where there is sea, warmth, flowers, plants. But Latin America is not only that, and not all countries correspond to that fantasy. Paraíso plays with that expectation and with its contradictions.

Beyond being a fair, you speak about Paraíso as a platform and as a cultural project. How do you define it?

JC: Paraíso is an art fair, but also a platform for creating new dialogues around Latin American art. We do not want to be a version of something that already exists, but rather to build our own identity: to present artists who deserve to be better known, to recover histories, and to propose new things. In this first edition, for example, we include artists such as Felipe Ehrenberg, who deserves much more recognition, and Pola Weiss, a very important figure in Mexican video art.

It is also important to say that Paraíso was not born from a group with major investors or capital behind it. It is a project that exists from the ground up and functions through alliances. I like to think of it as a party: a space where we welcome different participants and galleries, supporting them when possible and understanding that each project has different needs.

That flexibility is key for us. Paraíso brings together established galleries, young projects, artists trained in prestigious institutions, and other spaces that do not necessarily operate as galleries but have a serious proposal and care about the quality of the art. What we are trying to do is open up more opportunities without losing sight of the merit and quality of what is being presented.

What kinds of galleries and projects come together in this first edition? What criteria guided the selection?

JC: The criterion has been to try to give voice to different voices. We have projects such as Salón Silicón, from Mexico, a young project with a very strong focus on women and queer communities. We also have Kiosko, from Bolivia, which makes me very happy because we wanted to include proposals from more peripheral countries, with scenes that often circulate less and about which it is not always easy to find information from the outside.

On the other hand, we have a gallery like Cecilia Brunson Projects, from London, a very well-positioned and powerful gallery, which participates in Frieze London and Frieze Masters, and also with us. We are also working with Juan Canela, the chief curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Panama, who is making a video selection from Central American galleries. Imagining that a small gallery from Honduras, El Salvador, or Panama could come all the way to London and take that risk is not easy at all. Being able to include those voices excites me a lot.

Mexico will be the guest country of this first edition. Why did you decide to start there?

JC: I decided to start with Mexico for obvious reasons: I am Mexican and I know much more about Mexico than about any other country in Latin America. But, in addition, Mexico is one of the most complex and rich countries in Latin America. Together with the area of Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia, it forms part of one of the great original civilizations. It is an incredibly rich culture, where the ancient, the modern, and the contemporary coexist all the time.

Mexico has a very influential tradition in the twentieth century, with Mexican modernism, and a dynamic history from the sixties and seventies onward. That is why we speak about Felipe Ehrenberg, Pola Weiss, and what happens in the eighties and nineties. When you bring all that history together, there is no other country like Mexico in Latin America. Brazil has had great strength, especially in the twentieth century, but Mexico has a different historical depth. We would not even have time to make a complete introduction, but it is important that this is understood.

Beyond the booths, Paraíso will include installations, publications, performances, and a public program. How do you imagine the experience of walking through the fair?

JC: Paraíso will be an intimate fair. There will be a section where the public program takes place: a playful space that can function for an academic or historical presentation and then transform itself for a performance.

Then the public will be able to walk through the space, encounter the galleries, and move toward a more open section with artists and projects that one would expect to see at a satellite fair: young artists, recent graduates from local universities. Then there will be a food section, where there is noise, where there is flavor, and also an area for publications and editions.

Where do you imagine Paraíso in five years?

JC: I do not necessarily imagine it much bigger than what we are doing now, but I do imagine it playing an important role in the institutional, educational, and cultural relationship between Latin America and other regions.

I would love for Paraíso, in five years, to have a couple of editions in other countries where encounter is needed: Paraíso Seoul, Paraíso Delhi, Paraíso Dubai, Paraíso Shanghai. We need to create new dialogues between Latin America and other regions that have been denied.

We have always functioned through a centralized network: to get from Latin America to another region, you have to pass through the United States or Europe. What we are seeking is to create new encounters. It is time to discover China, India, the Middle East, and other regions, and also for those regions to discover Latin America.

Art is not something superficial. For me, art is close to ancient philosophy, religion, mythology, symbolism, ceremony, ritual. If we are truly concerned about the world and about society, art can create new connections and opportunities.

To close, what call would you like to make from Paraíso?

JC: We need to believe in it, and we need to make things happen. I invite more people to join us and become part of a decentralized, open, and non-hierarchical network.

One can collaborate in a small way or in a larger way, through a very strong participation or through something lighter. Paraíso is for everyone.

Hace 16 años, Javier Calderón fundó Somers Gallery con la intención de abrir espacios de visibilidad para el arte latinoamericano en Londres.

Hoy, como fundador de Paraíso, una nueva feria de arte latinoamericano durante London Frieze Week 2026, amplía ese compromiso hacia una plataforma que reúne galerías, artistas, instituciones y públicos, mientras imagina nuevos diálogos entre América Latina y regiones que históricamente han quedado fuera de sus circuitos habituales.

En esta conversación, Javier nos cuenta cómo nace Paraíso y cómo la feria busca funcionar más allá del espacio comercial. También habla sobre México como país invitado en esta primera edición, la importancia de incluir galerías y proyectos de distintas escalas, y su deseo de imaginar conexiones entre América Latina y regiones como India y Medio Oriente.

¿En qué momento sentiste que era necesario crear una feria dedicada al arte latinoamericano en Londres?

JC: Desde el principio, hace 16 años, siempre quise promover arte latinoamericano en el lugar donde estuviera. Primero me enfoqué mucho en arte mexicano, y después pensé que me estaba limitando y me expandí al arte latinoamericano.

Creo que estas necesidades han existido desde hace muchos años, pero llega un momento en el que aparece una oportunidad. Para mí, ese momento es ahora. Ya tengo suficiente experiencia de llevar Somers Gallery por más de diez años y de haber hecho festivales que han atraído hasta 12.000 personas, como el festival de Día de Muertos, en colaboración con la British Library, la Embajada de México, Camden y escuelas de la zona.

Después de la pandemia, todo se aceleró y cambió. Creo que estamos en un momento en el que las regiones están teniendo nuevas conversaciones, y es una oportunidad para iniciar otro diálogo entre el Reino Unido y América Latina. Londres se está recuperando del Brexit y puede funcionar como una plataforma para algo más grande.

Después de tantos años trabajando con Somers Gallery, ¿cómo entiendes el ecosistema artístico de Londres?

JC: El ecosistema del Reino Unido es uno de los más desarrollados. Es muy complejo: instituciones académicas, asociaciones, fundaciones, espacios grassroots, galerías independientes, galerías comerciales, casas de subasta.

Es un ecosistema increíble. Me ha tomado tiempo entenderlo, primero desde mi experiencia en distintas instituciones en Londres y luego a través de Somers Gallery. Esa familiaridad con la escena es lo que hoy me da la confianza para crear Paraíso.

La palabra Paraíso tiene muchas resonancias. ¿Por qué elegiste ese nombre para una feria de arte latinoamericano?

JC: Los nombres siempre son difíciles de escoger. Para mí, Paraíso refleja un poco lo que se espera de América Latina: ese paisaje paradisíaco, un lugar donde hay mar, calor, flores, plantas. Pero Latinoamérica no es solo eso, ni todos los países responden a esa fantasía. Paraíso juega con esa expectativa y con sus contradicciones.

Además de una feria, hablas de Paraíso como una plataforma y como un proyecto cultural. ¿Cómo lo defines?

JC: Paraíso es una feria de arte, pero también una plataforma para crear nuevos diálogos alrededor del arte latinoamericano. No queremos ser una versión de algo que ya existe, sino construir una identidad propia: presentar artistas que merecen ser mejor conocidos, rescatar historias y proponer cosas nuevas. En esta primera edición, por ejemplo, incluimos a artistas como Felipe Ehrenberg, que merece mucho más reconocimiento, y Pola Weiss, una figura muy importante del videoarte mexicano.

También es importante decir que Paraíso no nace de un grupo con grandes inversionistas o capital detrás. Es un proyecto que existe desde abajo y que funciona a partir de alianzas. Me gusta pensarlo como una fiesta: un espacio donde damos la bienvenida a participantes y galerías distintas, apoyándolas cuando sea posible y entendiendo que cada proyecto tiene necesidades diferentes.

Esa flexibilidad es clave para nosotros. Paraíso reúne galerías consolidadas, proyectos jóvenes, artistas formados en instituciones prestigiosas y otros espacios que no necesariamente funcionan como galerías, pero que tienen una propuesta seria y cuidan la calidad del arte. Lo que intentamos es abrir más oportunidades sin perder de vista el mérito y la calidad de lo que se presenta.

¿Qué tipo de galerías y proyectos se reúnen en esta primera edición? ¿Qué criterios guiaron la selección?

JC: El criterio ha sido tratar de dar voz a distintas voces. Tenemos proyectos como Salón Silicón, de México, un proyecto joven con un enfoque muy fuerte en mujeres y comunidades queer. También tenemos Kiosko, de Bolivia, que me da mucha alegría porque queríamos incluir propuestas de países más periféricos, con escenas que muchas veces circulan menos y sobre las que no siempre es fácil tener información desde afuera.

Del otro lado, tenemos una galería como Cecilia Brunson Projects, de Londres, una galería muy posicionada y con gran fuerza, que se presenta en Frieze London y Frieze Masters, y también con nosotros. También estamos trabajando con Juan Canela, el curador jefe del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Panamá, que está haciendo una selección de video de galerías de Centroamérica. Imaginar que una galería pequeña de Honduras, El Salvador o Panamá pueda venir hasta Londres y arriesgarse no es nada fácil. Poder incluir esas voces me entusiasma mucho.

México será el país invitado de esta primera edición. ¿Por qué decidiste empezar por ahí?

JC: Decidí empezar con México por razones obvias: soy mexicano y conozco mucho más de México que de cualquier otro país de América Latina. Pero, además, México es uno de los países más complejos y ricos de América Latina. Junto con el área de Perú, Ecuador y Bolivia, forma parte de una de las grandes civilizaciones originarias. Es una cultura increíblemente rica, donde lo antiguo, lo moderno y lo contemporáneo conviven todo el tiempo.

México tiene una tradición muy influyente en el siglo XX, con el modernismo mexicano, y una historia dinámica desde los años sesenta y setenta. Por eso hablamos de Felipe Ehrenberg, de Pola Weiss, de lo que pasa en los ochenta y los noventa. Cuando juntas toda esa historia, no hay otro país como México en América Latina. Brasil ha tenido una gran fuerza, sobre todo en el siglo XX, pero México tiene una profundidad histórica distinta. No nos daría tiempo ni siquiera de hacer una introducción completa, pero es importante que se entienda.

Más allá de los stands, Paraíso incluirá instalaciones, publicaciones, performances y un programa público. ¿Cómo imaginas la experiencia de recorrer la feria?

JC: Paraíso será una feria íntima. Habrá una sección donde sucede el programa público: un espacio lúdico que puede funcionar para una presentación académica o histórica, y después transformarse para un performance.

Luego el público podrá caminar por el espacio, encontrarse con las galerías, moverse hacia una sección más abierta con artistas y proyectos que uno esperaría ver en una feria satélite: artistas jóvenes, recién graduados de universidades locales. Después habrá una sección de comida, donde se escuche ruido, donde haya sabor, y también una zona de publicaciones y ediciones.

¿Dónde imaginas a Paraíso en cinco años?

JC: No me lo imagino necesariamente mucho más grande que lo que estamos haciendo ahora, pero sí con un papel importante en la relación institucional, educativa y cultural entre América Latina y otras regiones.

Me encantaría que en cinco años Paraíso tuviera un par de ediciones en otros países donde nos hace falta el encuentro: Paraíso Seúl, Paraíso Delhi, Paraíso Dubái, Paraíso Shanghái. Necesitamos crear nuevos diálogos entre América Latina y otras regiones que han sido negadas.

Siempre hemos funcionado con una red centralizada: para llegar de América Latina a otra región tienes que pasar por Estados Unidos o por Europa. Lo que buscamos es crear nuevos encuentros. Es momento de descubrir China, India, Medio Oriente y otras regiones, y también de que esas regiones descubran América Latina.

El arte no es algo superficial. Para mí, el arte está cerca de la filosofía antigua, la religión, la mitología, el simbolismo, la ceremonia, el ritual. Si realmente estamos preocupados por el mundo y por la sociedad, el arte puede crear nuevas conexiones y oportunidades.

Para cerrar, ¿qué llamado te gustaría hacer desde Paraíso?

JC: Hay que confiar y hay que hacer. Yo hago un llamado a que más personas se unan, a que sean parte de una red descentralizada, abierta y no jerárquica.

Se puede colaborar de una forma pequeña o de una forma mayor, desde una participación muy fuerte o desde algo más ligero. Paraíso es para todos.

This past week, Venezuela was struck by two devastating earthquakes, with magnitudes reported at approximately 7.2 and 7.5. We decided to pause our regular programming because, right now, what matters most is helping in any way we can.

The situation is still unfolding, and each day brings more heartbreaking news. More than 2,000 people have lost their lives, and that number continues to rise. Thousands more have been injured, displaced, separated from loved ones, or left waiting anxiously for news, while others remain trapped beneath the rubble, still waiting to be rescued.

Many people in our community are Venezuelan, and today our thoughts are with each one of you: with those living through this tragedy directly, with those waiting for updates from family and friends, with those mourning unimaginable loss, with those trying to reach loved ones, and with those carrying the pain of being far away.

Among the countless proposals to discover and enjoy during the days of Basel, both the fairs and the satellite projects formed a complex and inseparable fabric that invites us to rethink artistic practices shaped by globalization, capitalism, consumption, territorialization, technology, and many other issues that define the contemporary world. Against this backdrop, we invited curator and Art in Latin America’s Paris advisor, Dayneris Brito, to share her highlights from the fair.

Every two years, the art world returns to Venice for what remains, more than a century later, its most important event.

This year’s edition arrived under a shadow. The 61st International Art Exhibition, titled In Minor Keys, was conceived by Koyo Kouoh, the first African woman to lead the Biennale’s central exhibition, who died unexpectedly in May 2025, a year before it opened. It was also marked by tensions that were hard to ignore: the resignation of the international jury, the closure of the Russian pavilion to the general public, and a series of artist-led strikes against Israel’s participation on the eve of the opening.

Amid all of this, our own focus in Venice was on the voices coming from Latin America. What follows is a walk through some of those pavilions: Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Ecuador, and El Salvador. Together, they showed a region thinking through its histories while insisting on its place in the present.

Brazil: Comigo ninguém pode

The Brazilian pavilion in the Giardini was one of our first stops, and one of the most anticipated. This year, the country was represented by Adriana Varejão and Rosana Paulino, two major figures of the Brazilian contemporary art scene who, despite belonging to the same generation, had never collaborated before.

Jun Martínez is a Puerto Rican painter whose practice encompasses a decade of immersive contemplation in natural environments, translating his perceptions and memories into a language of painterly materiality. Through dense and atmospheric compositions, his work approaches landscape as a space of memory and belonging, where the natural environment becomes inseparable from lived experience.

In this conversation, Jun reflects on his early encounters with drawing and painting, his training in Puerto Rico, and the ways in which the island continues to inform his visual language. He also speaks about how living in London has transformed his relationship with landscape, and about his first presentation with Cecilia Brunson Projects during London Gallery Weekend.

Jun, how did your relationship with painting begin?

JM: My relationship with art was present from a very early age, although not necessarily as an idea of a profession or a future. There were no visual artists in my family, not even as a hobby. My parents came more from the world of music: my father worked in radio, my paternal grandfather did too, and my mother was a publicist for musicians. But when I was little, I liked to draw little figures and cartoons. My family noticed that interest and, without really knowing what they were planting, enrolled me in art courses, summer camps, and spaces where that could develop.

There was a teacher, in one of those courses, who saw what I was doing and told my family: “This child needs to be placed in a specialized school.” She was the first person to tell them that there was something there that deserved extra attention. So, at the age of twelve, they enrolled me in the Escuela Central de Artes Visuales in Puerto Rico, and that changed my life.

Even so, as a child, I never thought I would become an artist. In fact, I wanted to be a scientist, because my grandmother was a chemistry teacher and I loved going to the laboratory. Perhaps there is something of that which translates into my studio today: the ingredients, the color mixtures, the oils, the thinners. Something of that enchantment with the laboratory eventually carried over into painting.

How do you remember your first steps in the art world, at the Escuela Central de Artes Visuales?

JM: It was not the art world as I understand it now; it was the world through art, life lived through art. It was a magical place.

At seventeen, I began putting together creative research proposals, mounting exhibitions, and learning how to transform a space and hang work. Curiously, without knowing it, I was already working with themes of Puerto Rican identity and the relationship between identity and land. I did not realize this until I arrived in London at the age of thirty-two and looked back. Since adolescence, I had been looking to the land in order to process those reflections, before having any thematic notion that identity was a question art could explore.

When the time came to pursue my bachelor’s degree, I was already convinced that this was what I wanted to do. That is how I came to study Fine Arts at the University of Puerto Rico.

You began your artistic training in Puerto Rico. What did that context give you that you feel you could not have found elsewhere?

JM: Completing my bachelor’s degree in Puerto Rico was one of the most important decisions of my life. It allowed me to complete my formation as an artist from the place with which I identify, from the history that feels like my own, from the examples of craft and nation-building that Puerto Rican artists have offered through their work.

University life is very close to the country’s social problems and struggles, and all of that became embedded in my work. In Puerto Rico, I understood that a commitment to art is also a commitment to the reality that surrounds you.

And now that you live in London, how would you describe the language your work is taking on today?

JM: Today, I would say that my work is born from a conversation with the natural environments that formed me and those I continue to encounter. What emerges from there are expressions of a language that I have been learning through those conversations.

I just installed an exhibition here and, when I looked at it, I thought: what I am seeing is me speaking as I am able to speak, from where I am, in the moment I am in. These are the paintings that Jun Martínez can make in London in 2026, three years after living here, with the relationship I still maintain with Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. My painting is very much about processing through action, through being in the studio painting. I am the kind of artist who sees things afterward: the language of color and medium always moves ahead of words. Words catch up later.

There is an intensity in the color palette you use that immediately draws attention. Where does that relationship with color come from?

JM: It begins with light. My initial relationship with color is a relationship with the light of Puerto Rico. When I have been in other places — a residency in Vermont, for example — I have painted with the light of that place: winter light over white snow. What is happening to me now in London is interesting: I am painting references to the Puerto Rican landscape with my English light. So yes, they are intense colors, but the palette is very different from the one I used when painting in Puerto Rico, where the response to light was very direct, almost automatic.

At first glance, my paintings can be read as colorful and vibrant, but I think that anyone who allows themselves more time with the work sees the darkness, the violence upon the landscape. Because, although there is always a celebration of the land, there is also a solidarity with it. When one is aware of the world’s imbalances, of how power is distributed, of injustices, one understands that people suffer as the land suffers.

I had a very strong reaction the first times I saw Anselm Kiefer’s paintings in Germany, and that violence inscribed in his landscapes. But, as a Puerto Rican, from my experience of how we process grief, I could not make work about the mourning of my land without life also being present. Where I come from, even in moments of suffering, life moves through us. We have very sad songs with very danceable rhythms. We can be protesting with great anger and, at the same time, with great revelry. They are apparent contradictions, but they are equally valid expressions of grief and rage. My painting tries to approach that.

Your work is always in constant dialogue with the land of Puerto Rico. What happens to that dialogue when you have it from a distance?

JM: It is still being reconfigured. For almost a decade, my work has had to do with the land and with how landscape takes shape in the imagination. For a long time, I held those reflections from within, and they were very special for that very reason. But, by moving away, I think they have acquired a less direct dimension. They have become contaminated, in a good sense.

I often say that I resist nostalgia, but nostalgia is there, whether I choose it or not. And the more I resisted it, the more nostalgic my paintings ended up becoming. So, I am increasingly allowing myself to paint as I am and as I go, and to have patience. I had a reflection recently: if it is true that I am a painter of Puerto Rico, a painter of the land of Puerto Rico, then I am also a painter of where I am. So, when someone sees my current work and sees tropical plants, rivers, and earth, that is the language. But the content is my experience of being here. The two things come together.

What kinds of conversations would you like to open up about Puerto Rico?

JM: Puerto Rico is very present on global platforms today, and that makes me very happy. But I worry that the narratives reduce the complexity of the Puerto Rican experience. There is so much poetic and historical richness that cannot fit into a single narrative.

More than the conversations I would like to open up, what matters to me is the tone in which we have them: not to edify Puerto Rico’s suffering or resistance so that they can be consumed, but rather to continue contributing to respect for an experience that is deeply flesh and blood.

You are about to open an exhibition at Cecilia Brunson Projects. What can you tell us in advance?

JM: There are ten paintings in very varied formats, from small pieces of around twenty centimeters to works over two meters.

The installation was conceived to create an immersive sensation, which is something very important to me. During the first years of my practice, I painted only outdoors. My work was born directly from being inside the landscape. It was only in 2017, with Hurricane Maria, that I learned to paint inside a studio out of necessity. Today, being in London, I project photographs that I take myself in Puerto Rico onto the walls of the studio. So, if I cannot physically be in the landscape, I enter the photograph of the landscape.

I think the exhibition is an extension of that: I want the viewer to enter and feel that they are entering the landscape as well. If there is any mission in what I do, it is for painting to return both myself and the viewer to the land. It is not about remaining inside the painting, it is about leaving it and reconnecting with nature.

The paintings I am presenting come from the place I inhabit today. In concrete terms: I live in London, but I miss my climate, the sounds of the river, the coquí, the flamboyant trees, the yellow oaks, the blue of the sky. What the works are giving me is something like a third place: not there, not here, but the integration of the two through color, textures, and that immersive perspective.

Jun Martínez es un pintor puertorriqueño cuya práctica abarca una década de contemplación inmersiva en entornos naturales, traduciendo sus percepciones y memorias en un lenguaje de materialidad pictórica. A través de composiciones densas y atmosféricas, su obra aborda el paisaje como un espacio de memoria y pertenencia, donde el entorno natural se vuelve inseparable de la experiencia vivida.

En esta conversación, Jun reflexiona sobre sus primeros acercamientos al dibujo y la pintura, su formación en Puerto Rico y las formas en que la isla continúa informando su lenguaje visual. También habla sobre cómo vivir en Londres ha transformado su relación con el paisaje y sobre su primera presentación con Cecilia Brunson Projects durante London Gallery Weekend.

Jun, ¿cómo empieza tu relación con la pintura?

JM: Mi relación con el arte estuvo presente desde muy temprano, aunque no necesariamente como una idea de profesión o de futuro. En mi familia no había artistas visuales, ni siquiera de hobby. Mis padres venían más bien del mundo de la música: mi papá trabajaba en la radio, mi abuelo paterno también, y mi mamá era relacionista pública de músicos. Pero cuando era pequeño me gustaba dibujar figuritas y caricaturas. Mi familia notó ese interés y, sin saber muy bien lo que estaban sembrando, me pusieron en cursos de arte, campamentos de verano y espacios donde eso pudiera desarrollarse.

Hubo una maestra, en uno de esos cursos, que vio lo que yo hacía y le dijo a mi familia: “A este niño hay que ponerlo en una escuela especializada”. Fue la primera persona que les dijo que ahí había algo que merecía atención extra. Entonces, a los doce años, me matricularon en la Escuela Central de Artes Visuales en Puerto Rico, y eso me cambió la vida.

Aun así, de pequeño nunca pensé que sería artista. De hecho, yo quería ser científico, porque mi abuela era maestra de química y a mí me encantaba ir al laboratorio. Quizás hay algo de eso que hoy se traduce en mi taller: los ingredientes, las mezclas de colores, los aceites, los diluyentes. Algo de ese encanto del laboratorio terminó trasladándose, eventualmente, a la pintura.

¿Cómo recuerdas tus primeros pasos en el mundo del arte, en la Escuela Central de Artes Visuales?

JM: No era el mundo del arte como lo entiendo ahora; era el mundo a través del arte, la vida vivida desde el arte. Era un lugar mágico.

A los diecisiete años, empecé a armar propuestas de investigación creativa, montaba exhibiciones y aprendí a transformar un espacio y colgar obra. Curiosamente, sin saberlo, ya estaba trabajando con temas de identidad puertorriqueña y la relación entre identidad y tierra. No me di cuenta de eso hasta que llegué a Londres a los treinta y dos años y miré hacia atrás. Llevaba desde la adolescencia mirando a la tierra para procesar esas reflexiones, antes de tener cualquier noción temática de que la identidad era una pregunta que el arte exploraba.

Cuando llegó el momento de hacer el bachillerato, ya estaba convencido de que esto era lo que quería hacer. Así llegué a estudiar Bellas Artes en la Universidad de Puerto Rico.

Iniciaste tu formación artística en Puerto Rico. ¿Qué te dio ese contexto que sientes que no podrías haber encontrado en otro lugar?

JM: Hacer el bachillerato en Puerto Rico fue una de las decisiones más importantes de mi vida. Me permitió terminar mi formación como artista desde el lugar con el cual me identifico, desde la historia que me resulta propia, desde los ejemplos de oficio y de construcción de país que los artistas puertorriqueños han ofrecido a través de sus obras.

La vida universitaria está muy cercana a los problemas y luchas sociales del país, y todo eso se impregnó en mi obra. En Puerto Rico entendí que el compromiso con el arte es también un compromiso con la realidad que te rodea.

Y ahora que vives en Londres, ¿cómo describirías el lenguaje que está tomando tu obra hoy?

JM: Hoy diría que mi obra nace de una conversación con los entornos naturales que me formaron y los que sigo conociendo. Lo que sale de ahí son expresiones de un lenguaje que he ido aprendiendo en esas conversaciones.

Acabo de montar una exhibición aquí y, cuando la miré, pensé: lo que estoy viendo soy yo hablando como puedo hablar, desde donde estoy, en el momento en el que estoy. Son las pinturas que Jun Martínez puede hacer en Londres en el 2026, a tres años de vivir aquí, con la relación que todavía conservo con Puerto Rico y el Caribe. Mi pintura es mucho de procesar a través de la acción, de estar en el taller pintando. Soy el tipo de artista que ve las cosas después: el lenguaje del color y del medio siempre va más adelante que las palabras. Las palabras las alcanzan después.

Hay una intensidad en la paleta de colores que usas que llama la atención de inmediato. ¿De dónde viene esa relación con el color?

JM: Empieza con la luz. Mi relación inicial con el color es una relación con la luz de Puerto Rico. Cuando he estado en otros lugares —una residencia en Vermont, por ejemplo—, he pintado con la luz de ese lugar: la luz de invierno sobre la nieve blanca. Lo que me está pasando ahora en Londres es interesante: estoy pintando referencias del paisaje puertorriqueño con mi luz inglesa. Entonces sí, son colores intensos, pero la paleta es muy distinta a la que usaba pintando en Puerto Rico, donde la respuesta a la luz era muy directa, casi automática.

A primera vista, mis pinturas pueden leerse como coloridas y vibrantes, pero creo que quien se permite más tiempo con la obra ve la oscuridad, la violencia sobre el paisaje. Porque, aunque siempre hay una celebración de la tierra, hay también una solidaridad con ella. Cuando uno es consciente de los desbalances del mundo, de cómo se distribuyen los poderes, de las injusticias, uno entiende que la gente sufre como sufre la tierra.

Tuve una reacción muy fuerte las primeras veces que vi las pinturas de Anselm Kiefer en Alemania y con esa violencia inscrita en sus paisajes. Pero, como puertorriqueño, desde mi experiencia con cómo procesamos el duelo, yo no podía hacer obra sobre el luto de mi tierra sin que estuviera también presente la vida. De donde vengo, aun en los momentos de sufrimiento, la vida nos atraviesa. Tenemos canciones muy tristes con ritmos muy bailables. Podemos estar protestando con mucha ira y, a la vez, con mucho jolgorio. Son aparentes contradicciones, pero son expresiones igualmente válidas de duelo y de rabia. Mi pintura trata de acercarse a eso.

Tu obra siempre está en constante diálogo con la tierra de Puerto Rico. ¿Qué le pasa a ese diálogo cuando lo tienes desde la distancia?

JM: Todavía se está reconfigurando. Por casi una década, mi trabajo ha tenido que ver con la tierra y con cómo el paisaje toma forma en la imaginación. Por mucho tiempo, esas reflexiones las tuve desde adentro, y eran muy especiales por eso mismo. Pero, al alejarme, creo que han adquirido una dimensión menos directa. Se han contaminado, en el buen sentido.

Digo mucho que me resisto a la nostalgia, pero la nostalgia está ahí, la escoja yo o no. Y mientras más la resistía, mis pinturas terminaban siendo más nostálgicas. Entonces, cada vez me estoy permitiendo más pintar como estoy y como voy, y tener paciencia. Tuve una reflexión hace poco: si es verdad que soy un pintor de Puerto Rico, un pintor de la tierra de Puerto Rico, también soy un pintor de donde estoy. Entonces, cuando alguien ve mi obra actual y ve plantas tropicales, ríos y tierra, ese es el lenguaje. Pero el contenido es mi experiencia de estar acá. Las dos cosas se juntan.

¿Qué tipo de conversaciones te gustaría abrir sobre Puerto Rico?

JM: Puerto Rico está muy presente en plataformas globales hoy, y me alegra mucho. Pero me preocupa que las narrativas reduzcan la complejidad de la experiencia puertorriqueña. Hay mucha riqueza poética e histórica que no cabe en una sola narrativa.

Más que conversaciones que me gustaría abrir, me importa el tono en el que las tenemos: no edificar los sufrimientos ni las resistencias de Puerto Rico para que se consuman, sino seguir abonando al respeto por una experiencia que es muy de carne y hueso.

Estás a punto de inaugurar una exposición en Cecilia Brunson Projects. ¿Qué nos puedes adelantar?

JM: Son diez pinturas en formatos muy variados, desde piezas pequeñas de unos veinte centímetros hasta obras de más de dos metros.

La instalación se pensó para crear una sensación inmersiva, que es algo muy importante para mí. Durante mis primeros años de práctica, pintaba solamente al aire libre. Mi obra nacía directamente de estar dentro del paisaje. Fue solo en 2017, con el huracán María, que aprendí a pintar dentro de un taller por necesidad. Hoy, estando en Londres, proyecto fotografías que yo mismo tomo de Puerto Rico sobre las paredes del estudio. Así, si no puedo estar físicamente en el paisaje, me meto en la foto del paisaje.

Creo que la exhibición es una extensión de eso: quiero que el espectador entre y sienta que se está metiendo en el paisaje también. Si hay alguna misión en lo que hago, es que la pintura me devuelva a la tierra, a mí y al que la mira. No es quedarse dentro de la pintura, es salir de ella y volver a tener esa relación con la naturaleza.

Las pinturas que estoy presentando vienen del lugar en el que habito hoy. En términos concretos: vivo en Londres, pero extraño mi clima, los sonidos del río, el coquí, los flamboyanes, los robles amarillos, el azul del cielo. Lo que las obras me están dando es algo así como un tercer lugar: no allá, no acá, sino la integración de los dos a través del color, las texturas y esa perspectiva inmersiva.

It is true that artistic production has taken shape in a different way, given that the relationship between Latin American cultural migrations and Paris has a long history: that of artists who moved to the city through residencies and study grants and who later helped trace part of local art history. However, the relationship between Paris and Latin American curating — or curators explicitly focused on the region and based in the city — is much more recent.

As a Cuban curator in the midst of discovering the inner workings of the system, finding a Latin American colleague in 2021 meant, for me, encountering a professional reference point and opening myself up to the notion of a possible professional “community” — if such a thing existed — something that had been so scarce since my arrival. My first point of reference, and someone who continues to be one to this day, was the Uruguayan curator Noelia Portela.

Based in Paris for the past decade, following work experiences in New Zealand, London, Venice, and New York, Noelia Portela synthesizes and asserts through her practice one of the conditions that defines both myself and many young art professionals in our community: that of being an independent curator, with an established and consistent practice — and therefore one considered her main source of income — while also being a migrant.

I sit down with Noelia to discuss the challenges that define Latin American curating in the city, the professional paths available to a curator who constructs herself from displacement and the margins, and, more specifically, Persona Curada, the platform through which she has spent nearly a decade making visible and promoting the work of Latin American artists in the diaspora, against the financial instability this may entail.

DB: Noelia, before settling in Paris, your practice intersected with other fields, such as work in art spaces, galleries, and commercial fairs — including Peter McLeavey Gallery in New Zealand; your collaboration with Galería AFA in Chile for the Ch.ACO fair; Venice Design; and, more recently, 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair and Mira Art Fair. Was curating something that came to you later, in a more spontaneous way, or was it always the central axis of your work?

NP: I could say that it has always been the central axis of my practice, or at least the direction toward which everything tended, although my entry into curating was not direct. I began by studying set design, and it was through an art history class that something shifted. In that context, I began to be less interested in how exhibitions looked and more in what they said, in the discourses they constructed and the relationships they activated. That opened up a field of reflection that marked the beginning of my interest in curating.

From then on, I knew I wanted to be a curator, in the sense that there was a clear professional horizon. However, over time I came to understand that “being a curator” is not learned solely through the formal frameworks that proliferate today — programs, master’s degrees, or specialized training — but is, above all, a practice built through doing. It is a process woven through networks, community, shared experiences, and sustained work over time. The figure of the independent curator, as we understand it today, is relatively recent and continues to transform.

At the same time, this practice is deeply shaped by a material reality that is not neutral. Not everyone has the same conditions to access or sustain an independent curatorial career. The structural precarity of the sector, the lack of fair remuneration, and the dependence on informal networks mean that this practice remains, in many cases, a space of privilege. Recognizing this is fundamental: being able to work as an independent curator and, even more so, being able to live from it, implies occupying a position that is not equally available to everyone.

This is also why sustaining a curatorial practice means actively participating in different levels of the art ecosystem — production, coordination, writing, mediation, teaching — not only as an economic necessity, but as a way of critically inhabiting that system. It is precisely within this multiplicity of experiences that the relationships that later sustain projects are developed. Because, ultimately, curatorial work is not limited to the conception of exhibitions, but is grounded in the ability to generate bonds, activate contexts, and collectively build spaces for thought and encounter.

DB: Upon your arrival in Paris in 2019, did you feel the support or, at least, the existence of a Latin American migrant community that, to some extent, contributed to your insertion into the city? In that sense, how did your affections and personal needs for integration coexist with your professional practice as a curator?

NP: I settled in Paris in 2019, although between 2017 and 2018 I was already traveling frequently to the city, alongside various freelance jobs. At that moment, Paris seemed to me a particularly stimulating context: a more concentrated scene and, in some respects, a more accessible one than cities such as Berlin or London, where I had previously lived and worked.

To answer your question directly, my arrival was not accompanied by a migrant community that facilitated my professional insertion. I did not have a pre-existing network to help me navigate the local ecosystem. In addition, shortly after I settled there, the pandemic arrived, which made everything even more chaotic and, in many ways, deeply lonely. The possibilities for encounter, circulation, and insertion were abruptly limited.

In that context, the process was necessarily self-directed. What truly opened up a space of possibility was Persona Curada. The project functioned not only as a curatorial platform, but as a tool to build the conditions I did not find already in place. Through Persona Curada, I began weaving a community that, at least from my experience, did not visibly exist at that time: a network of artists, art workers, friends, and collaborators inhabiting the local scene, who made the development of the projects possible. The artists who agreed to collaborate were fundamental, as were the spaces and institutions that trusted the project and opened their doors to me. It was within that web of relationships that my practice — and, progressively, my place within the French scene — began to take shape.

More than a linear insertion, it has been a process of collective construction, where community was not a starting point, but something that had to be imagined, activated, and accompanied in its development.

DB: In 2017, almost a decade ago now, you created Persona Curada, your professional “child” and the project that has most consolidated your curatorial identity. Persona Curada has functioned as a nonprofit platform, unprecedented in its style for being a pioneer in Paris in the representation of artists from the Latin American diaspora. Its functions are divided between the production of exhibitions and the accompaniment of artists, whether through grants, residencies, or applications, as was the case with its recent participation in Les Rencontres d’Arles 2025, with the work of Daniel Mebarek. Today, we could almost say, it has become an institution within the Paris art scene. Tell me about the main challenges of creating a project of this scale and, even more importantly, of sustaining it over time.

NP: For those who do not know Persona Curada, your introduction is very accurate, although I am interested in situating the project within the context in which it operates: a scene like Paris, which remains, in many ways, opaque and difficult to penetrate.

Persona Curada did not emerge as a representational gesture around a fixed identity — such as the Latin American diaspora — but as a situated response to concrete experiences. It is built from the people who activate it: artists and collaborators who inhabit and work within the local French scene. That is where the project is articulated from. Not as an “outside” seeking to enter, but as a practice that is already implicated in that fabric. This position has been key, because it shifts the idea of representation toward a logic of relation, insertion, and friction.

In that sense, the real challenge for Persona Curada is not so much to emerge, but, as you say, to sustain itself. To maintain a relevance that does not depend solely on the urgency of the moment, but on consistency over time. And that consistency is not programmatic; it is ethical. The question of coherence — between what is said and what is done — is central. But so is the way in which relationships are built. When we speak of radical care, feminisms, or intersectionality, it is not a matter of language or discursive positioning, but of concrete practices. Of how one works, how one cares, how one sustains those who are part of the process.

There is no possibility of building lasting structures without that dimension. There is no community without an ethics that sustains it. Persona Curada was born from that place: not as a platform of representation, but as a space to rehearse other ways of making institution. Or, perhaps, to imagine others that do not yet exist.

DB: Your work extends far beyond Persona Curada, something we have seen especially in recent years through your role as head of public programming for an art fair during its first two editions. You are also a teacher and have been invited to serve on juries for artist prizes, such as the Prix AWARE in 2024, awarded to Laura Huertas Millán following your nomination. In 2025, you received a grant from Fluxus Art Projects to travel to London, and this year you have been invited as a jury member at Beaux-Arts de Paris, at L’École nationale supérieure d’arts de Paris-Cergy, and as a specialist for one of the few existing institutional residencies in Île-de-France, with La Galerie, Centre d’Art Contemporain de Noisy-le-Sec. We are speaking here of true spaces of legitimation for curating and artistic management more broadly. Looking back at your trajectory, how has it been for Noelia Portela to make her way in a city that tends to privilege professional individualism and where curatorial practice is threatened by legal and salary precarity? What place do you give to the notion of community?

NP: In my personal experience, founding Persona Curada has been key to the development of my career in parallel. Thanks to the networks and collaborations that have been built over time, I have been able to integrate into and become an active part of the local French scene, which is, in reality, a profoundly international scene in its dynamics and actors.

From the beginning, the platform has been conceived as an open space, capable of welcoming and accompanying other practices. My working methodology has consisted of generating the conditions for other people to develop their own projects within this structure — whether through ongoing accompaniment or through specific participations, as you mention in the case of Daniel Mebarek at the Arles Festival. Accompanying artistic processes or building projects from A to Z produces forms of relationship that are both professional and affective, and that ultimately define a way of inhabiting the field.

At the same time, this experience has allowed me to closely observe the conditions under which curatorial work is carried out today. Faced with contexts that are often precarious, curators increasingly tend to organize themselves, affiliate, and generate networks that allow them not only to sustain their practices, but also to make visible those aspects of the work that often remain hidden.

Because, indeed, behind the glamorous and more visible dimension of the art world, problematic dynamics persist: poorly managed projects, lack of clarity around responsibilities, disproportionate promises in relation to the real conditions of collaboration, symbolic or even nonexistent remuneration. Naming these conditions is not anecdotal. It forms part of a broader need to reconfigure the field, to make it more transparent, fairer, and, ultimately, more viable for those who inhabit it.

DB: What themes and artistic sensibilities do you tend to prioritize in your work when selecting the artists you collaborate with?

NP: That is difficult to answer, because I do not start from a theme or a pre-existing concept when choosing whom to work with.

First there is a more intuitive and visual gesture: something in the form, in the presence of a work, that arrests the gaze. And then comes the second level, more discursive, which has to do with narrative and with the human; with how that work situates itself and what relationships it proposes, what position it assumes, what relationship it establishes with the world.

For me, it is in that crossing between the aesthetic and the human that a collaboration is defined.

DB: Noelia, in light of the recent emergence of Latin American artistic initiatives in Paris — the creation of platforms, blogs, and the appearance of new curators, content creators, and even pseudo-collectors — which have begun to insert Latin American art into a kind of boom of “now everyone wants to be Latino,” to use Bad Bunny’s phrase, what future do you foresee for the representation of Latin art in Paris?

NP: It gives me a lot of hope that initiatives are multiplying, but I also think it is fundamental that these projects manage to articulate themselves, generate alliances with existing projects, and, to some extent, institutionalize themselves in order to have a real impact.

It is crucial to problematize the very notion of “Latino identity,” which is not a neutral or homogeneous category, but rather a construction shaped by different colonial histories, racial hierarchies, and power relations that continue to operate today in extremely violent contemporary contexts. To think of Latino identity as a heteroclite block implies erasing fundamental differences of class, race, territory, and language, and in many cases reproduces a simplified gaze that responds more to an external logic than to the situated realities of Latin America.

From a decolonial perspective, the challenge is precisely to dismantle that category as a fixed label and to question from where it is enunciated and who represents it. This is especially relevant in Europe, where many of these discussions have still not been fully incorporated at all, while in Latin America they form part of more advanced critical and academic debates. Therefore, the projects that emerge in Europe are called not to replicate, but to profoundly rethink their frames of reference. Many times, they find themselves conditioned — even unconsciously — to reproduce white and Western positions within the scene.

For this reason, the challenge is not only to create spaces of “visibility,” but to build platforms capable of interrogating their own conditions of existence, avoiding the reproduction of inherited structures and opening, instead, other forms of thought and practice.

En el año 2021, cuando me asenté en París después de mis estudios de Curaduría en la Universidad de Navarra (Pamplona), el escenario artístico latinoamericano se mostraba como un panorama aislado y disperso, atrayente para un cierto número de investigadores y doctorandos, así como para algunos con intereses culturales de diversa índole en América Latina, ya fuesen musicales, plásticos o literarios, sin ir más allá de una verdadera sistematización de la presencia de agentes culturales. Cierto es que la producción artística se ha configurado de otra manera, dado que la relación de las migraciones culturales latinoamericanas en París es una historia antigua: la de artistas que emigraron a la ciudad con residencias y becas de estudio y que, posteriormente, trazaron parte de la historia del arte local. Sin embargo, la relación entre París y la curaduría latinoamericana -o de curadores explícitamente enfocados en la región y asentados en la ciudad- es mucho más reciente.

Como curadora cubana en pleno descubrimiento de los entresijos del sistema, encontrar en 2021 a una colega latinoamericana significó para mí dar con un referente profesional y abrirme a la noción de una posible “comunidad” profesional -si es que existía-, algo que tanto escaseaba desde mi llegada. Mi primer referente, y alguien que continúa siéndolo hasta hoy, fue la curadora uruguaya Noelia Portela.

Radicada en París desde una década tras sus experiencias de trabajo en Nueva Zelanda, Londres, Venecia, y Nueva York, Noelia Portela sintetiza y reivindica con su práctica una de las condiciones que me atraviesan a mí y a buena parte de los jóvenes profesionales del arte de nuestra comunidad: la de ser curadora independiente, con una práctica establecida y constante -y, por tanto, considerada su principal fuente de ingresos-, y ser, al mismo tiempo, migrante.

Con Noelia me siento a conversar sobre los retos que definen la curaduría latinoamericana en la ciudad, las salidas profesionales para un curador que se construye desde el desplazamiento y el margen y, más puntualmente, sobre Persona Curada, su plataforma con la que lleva casi una década visibilizando y promoviendo el trabajo de artistas latinoamericanos en la diáspora, a contracorriente de la inestabilidad financiera que esto puede implicar.

DB: Noelia, antes de establecerte en París, tu práctica rozó otros ámbitos, como el trabajo en espacios de arte, galerías y ferias comerciales -como Peter McLeavy Gallery en Nueva Zelanda, colaboraste con la galería AFA en Chile para la feria Ch.ACO, Venice Design y, en años más recientementes, con 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair y Mira Art fair-. ¿Fue la curaduría para ti una elección que llegó posteriormente, de un modo más espontáneo, o siempre fue el eje central de tu trabajo?

NP: Podría decir que siempre ha sido el eje central de mi práctica, o al menos la dirección hacia la que todo tendía, aunque mi entrada a la curaduría no fue directa. Comencé estudiando diseño de escenografías y fue a partir de una clase de historia del arte que algo se desplazó. En ese contexto empecé a interesarme menos por cómo se veían las exposiciones y más por lo que decían, por los discursos que construían y las relaciones que activaban. Ahí se abrió un campo de reflexión que marcó el inicio de mi interés por la curaduría.

Desde entonces, supe que quería ser curadora, en el sentido de que existía un horizonte profesional claro. Sin embargo, con el tiempo entendí que el “ser curadora o curador” no se aprende únicamente a través de los marcos formales que hoy proliferan (programas, másteres o formaciones especializadas) sino que es, sobre todo, una práctica que se construye en el hacer. Es un proceso que se teje a partir de redes, de comunidad, de experiencias compartidas y de trabajo sostenido en el tiempo. La figura del curador independiente, tal como la entendemos hoy, es relativamente reciente y continúa en transformación.

Al mismo tiempo, esta práctica está profundamente atravesada por una realidad material que no es neutral. No todas las personas tienen las mismas condiciones para acceder o sostener una carrera curatorial independiente. La precariedad estructural del sector, la falta de remuneraciones justas y la dependencia de redes informales hacen que esta práctica siga siendo, en muchos casos, un espacio de privilegio. Reconocer esto es fundamental: poder trabajar como curadora independiente y, aún más, poder vivir de ello, implica una posición que no está igualmente disponible para todxs.

También por eso, sostener una práctica curatorial implica participar activamente en distintos niveles del ecosistema del arte —producción, coordinación, escritura, mediación, docencia— no solo como una necesidad económica, sino como una forma de habitar críticamente ese sistema. Es precisamente en esa multiplicidad de experiencias donde se desarrollan las relaciones que luego sostienen los proyectos. Porque, en última instancia, el trabajo curatorial no se limita a la concepción de exposiciones, sino que se funda en la capacidad de generar vínculos, de activar contextos y de construir, colectivamente, espacios de pensamiento y de encuentro.

DB: A tu llegada a París en el 2019, ¿sentiste el apoyo o, al menos, la existencia de una comunidad migratoria latinoamericana que, en cierta medida, contribuyera a tu inserción en la ciudad? En ese sentido, ¿cómo convivieron tus afectos y tus necesidades personales de integración con tu práctica profesional como curadora?

NP: Me instalé en París en 2019, aunque entre 2017 y 2018 ya viajaba con frecuencia a la ciudad, en paralelo a distintos trabajos freelance. En ese momento, París me parecía un contexto particularmente estimulante: una escena más concentrada y, en ciertos aspectos, más accesible que ciudades como Berlín o Londres, donde había vivido y trabajado anteriormente.

Para contestar directamente a tu pregunta, mi llegada no estuvo acompañada por una comunidad migrante que facilitara mi inserción profesional. No contaba con una red previa que me ayudara a navegar el ecosistema local. Además, poco tiempo después de instalarme, llegó la pandemia, lo que volvió todo aún más caótico y, en muchos sentidos, profundamente solitario. Las posibilidades de encuentro, de circulación y de inserción se vieron abruptamente limitadas.

En ese contexto, el proceso fue necesariamente autodirigido. Lo que realmente abrió un espacio de posibilidad fue Persona Curada. El proyecto funcionó no solo como una plataforma curatorial, sino como una herramienta para construir las condiciones que no encontraba dadas. A través de Persona Curada, fui tejiendo una comunidad que, al menos desde mi experiencia, no existía de manera visible en ese momento: una red de artistas, trabajadores del arte, amigxs y colaboradores que habitan la escena local y que hicieron posible el desarrollo de los proyectos. Fueron fundamentales lxs artistas que aceptaron colaborar, así como los espacios e instituciones que confiaron en el proyecto y me abrieron sus puertas. Es en ese entramado de relaciones se fue configurando mi práctica y, progresivamente, mi lugar dentro de la escena francesa.

Más que una inserción lineal, ha sido un proceso de construcción colectiva, donde la comunidad no era un punto de partida, sino algo que hubo que imaginar, activar y acompañar en su desarrollo.

DB: En 2017, hace ya casi una década, creas Persona Curada, tu “hijo” profesional y el proyecto que más ha consolidado tu marca curatorial. Persona Curada ha funcionado como una plataforma non profit, inédita en su estilo por ser pionera en París en la representación de artistas de la diáspora latinoamericana. Divide sus funciones entre la producción de exposiciones y el acompañamiento de artistas, ya sea en becas, residencias o candidaturas, como fue el caso de su reciente participación en Les Rencontres d’Arles 2025, con la obra de Daniel Mebarek. Hoy, convertida casi en una institución dentro del arte en París, podríamos decir. Cuéntame sobre los principales retos de crear un proyecto de esta envergadura y, más importante aún, de sostenerlo en el tiempo.

NP: Para quienes no conocen Persona Curada, tu introducción es muy acertada, aunque me interesa situar el proyecto dentro del contexto en el que opera: una escena como la parisina, que sigue siendo, en muchos sentidos, opaca y difícil de penetrar.

Persona Curada no surge como un gesto representacional en torno a una identidad fija —como podría ser la diáspora latinoamericana— sino como una respuesta situada a experiencias concretas. Se construye desde las personas que la activan: artistas y colaboradores que habitan y trabajan dentro de la escena local francesa. Es desde ahí que el proyecto se articula. No como un “afuera” que busca entrar, sino como una práctica que ya está implicada en ese tejido. Esa posición ha sido clave. Porque desplaza la idea de representación hacia una lógica de relación, de inserción y de fricción.

En ese sentido, el verdadero reto para Persona Curada no es tanto emerger, sino como dices, sostenerse. Mantener una relevancia que no dependa únicamente de la urgencia del momento, sino de una consistencia en el tiempo. Y esa consistencia no es programática, es ética. La cuestión de la coherencia —entre lo que se dice y lo que se hace— es central. Pero también lo es la manera en que se construyen los vínculos. Cuando hablamos de radical care, de feminismos o de interseccionalidad, no se trata de un lenguaje ni de una posición discursiva, sino de prácticas concretas. De cómo se trabaja, de cómo se cuida, de cómo se sostiene a quienes forman parte del proceso.

No hay posibilidad de construir estructuras duraderas sin esa dimensión. No hay comunidad sin una ética que la sostenga. Persona Curada nace desde ese lugar: no como una plataforma de representación, sino como un espacio para ensayar otras formas de hacer institución. O, quizás, para imaginar otras que aún no existen.

DB: Tu trabajo se extiende mucho más allá de Persona Curada, algo que hemos visto especialmente en los últimos años con tu participación como responsable de la programación pública de una feria de arte, durante sus dos primeras ediciones. Eres además docente, y has sido invitada a formar parte de jurados de premios para artistas, como el Prix AWARE en el 2024, otorgado a Laura Huertas Millán a partir de tu nominación. Fuiste galardonada en el 2025 con una beca de Fluxus Art Projects para ir a Londres, y este año estás invitada como jurado en el Beaux Arts de Paris, en L’École nationale supérieure d’arts de Paris-Cergy, y como especialista para una de las pocas residencias institucionales existentes en Ile-de-France con La Galerie Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Noisy-Le-Sec. Hablamos aquí de verdaderos espacios de legitimación para la curaduría y la gestión artística en general. Viendo tu trayectoria en perspectiva, ¿cómo ha sido para Noelia Portela abrirse paso en una ciudad que tiende a ponderar el individualismo profesional y donde la práctica curatorial se ve amenazada por la precariedad legal y salarial? ¿Qué lugar le otorgas a la noción de comunidad?

NP: En mi experiencia personal, haber fundado Persona Curada ha sido clave para el desarrollo de mi carrera en paralelo. Gracias a las redes y colaboraciones que se han ido construyendo a lo largo del tiempo, he podido integrarme y formar parte activa de la escena local francesa, la cual es, en realidad, una escena profundamente internacional en sus dinámicas y actores.

Desde el inicio, la plataforma se ha concebido como un espacio abierto, capaz de acoger y acompañar otras prácticas. Mi metodología de trabajo ha consistido en generar condiciones para que otras personas puedan desarrollar sus propios proyectos dentro de esta estructura —ya sea desde un acompañamiento continuo o a través de participaciones puntuales, como mencionas la participacion de Daniel Mebarek en el Festival de Arles. Acompañar procesos artísticos o construir proyectos de A a Z produce formas de relación que son a la vez profesionales y afectivas, y que terminan por definir una manera de habitar el campo.

Al mismo tiempo, esta experiencia me ha permitido observar de cerca las condiciones en las que se ejerce el trabajo curatorial hoy. Frente a contextos muchas veces precarios, los curadores tienden cada vez más a organizarse, a afiliarse y a generar redes que permitan no solo sostener sus prácticas, sino también visibilizar aquellos aspectos del trabajo que suelen permanecer ocultos.

Porque, en efecto, detrás de la dimensión glamorosa y más visible del mundo del arte, persisten dinámicas problemáticas: proyectos mal gestionados, falta de claridad en las misiones, promesas desproporcionadas respecto a las condiciones reales de colaboración, remuneraciones simbólicas o incluso inexistentes. Nombrar estas condiciones no es anecdótico. Forma parte de una necesidad más amplia de reconfigurar el campo, de hacerlo más transparente, más justo y, en última instancia, más viable para quienes lo habitan.

DB: ¿Qué temas y sensibilidades artísticas sueles priorizar en tu trabajo a la hora de seleccionar a los artistas con los que colaboras?

NP: Qué difícil responder eso, porque no parto de un tema o un concepto previo al elegir con quién trabajo.

Primero hay un gesto más intuitivo y visual: algo en la forma, en la presencia de un trabajo, que detiene la mirada. Y después viene el segundo nivel, más discursivo, que tiene que ver con la narrativa y con lo humano, con cómo ese trabajo se sitúa y qué relaciones propone, qué posicionamiento, qué relación con el mundo.

Para mí, es en ese cruce entre lo estético y lo humano donde se define una colaboración.

DB: Noelia, ante la reciente emergencia de iniciativas artísticas latinoamericanas en París -la creación de plataformas, blogs y la aparición de nuevos curadores, creadores de contenido e incluso seudocoleccionistas- que han comenzado a insertar el arte latinoamericano en una suerte de boom del “ahora todos quieren ser latinos”, para usar la rúbrica de Bad Bunny, ¿qué destino pronosticas para la representación del arte latino en París?

NP: Me da mucha esperanza que se multipliquen las iniciativas, pero también me parece fundamental que estos proyectos logren articularse y generar alianzas con proyectos existentes y, en cierta medida, institucionalizarse para poder tener un impacto real.

Es crucial problematizar la noción misma de “identidad latina” que no se trata de una categoría neutra ni homogénea, sino de una construcción atravesada por diferentes historias coloniales, jerarquías raciales y relaciones de poder que siguen operando hoy en contextos actuales extermadamente violentos. Pensar la identidad latina como un bloque hiteroclita implica borrar diferencias fundamentales de clase, raza, territorio, lengua, y en muchos casos reproduce una mirada simplificada que responde más a una lógica externa que a las realidades situadas de América Latina.

Desde una perspectiva decolonial, el desafío es precisamente desarticular esa categoría como etiqueta fija y cuestionar desde dónde se enuncia, quienes la representan. Esto es especialmente relevante en Europa, donde muchas de estas discusiones aún no han sido para nada plenamente incorporadas, mientras que en América Latina forman parte de debates críticos y académicos más avanzados. Por lo tanto los proyectos que emergen en Europa están llamados a no a replicar, sino a repensar profundamente sus marcos de referencia y muchas veces se ven condicionados —incluso de manera inconsciente— a reproducir posicionamientos blancos y occidentales dentro de la escena.

Por eso, el reto no es solo crear espacios de ‘visibilidad’, sino construir plataformas capaces de interrogar sus propias condiciones de existencia, evitando reproducir estructuras heredadas y abriendo, en cambio, otras formas de pensamiento y de práctica.

Kay Zevallos Villegas is a performance artist whose practice extends into sculpture and installation, rooted in the body as a living territory shaped by ancestral knowledge, memory, and environment. Drawing on her Andean-Quechua heritage and upbringing in the Peruvian Amazon, her work emerges from ritual and collective forms of knowing.

In this conversation, Kay reflects on inherited knowledge, extractivist histories, migration, and collaboration with women and migrant communities, while also discussing her upcoming performance at the Thyssen Museum, where she engages critically with colonial art histories through a dialogue with Paul Gauguin’s work.

Your work moves between performance, sculpture, and installation, although performance seems to occupy a central place. How did your interest in that language begin? Was it your starting point as an artist, or did you arrive at it through other media?

KZ: For me, the body is a territory that is constructed through the memories and knowledge of our ancestors, the environment, and lived experience. In my practice, performance does not appear as a medium in itself, but as a dialogue with that living territory.

My approach does not come from an academic tradition of contemporary art, but from my Andean-Quechua heritage and, above all, from having grown up in the Peruvian Amazon, where gesture, myth, transformation, and the relationship with that which lies beyond the visible are part of everyday life. I began dancing as a child, with the traditional dances of my region, but over time I understood that these movements were not only choreographic, but also carriers of memory and transmission.

Performance becomes a threshold where the body is not seen as an individual entity, but as collective, ancestral, and capable of imagining other forms of life. Sculpture, image, and installation emerge as traces or extensions of that event, as part of a ritual that does not end in its execution, but continues to dialogue with matter, which in turn becomes body.

You grew up in Iquitos, in the urban Peruvian Amazon. In what ways has that environment shaped your practice? How does your work engage with the knowledge, memories, and ways of relating to the world that you inherited?

KZ: I was born in Lima, but that is, in a way, an administrative matter: I arrived in Iquitos very young. It was there that I learned to relate to the world, where my consciousness was formed, and where everything began.

I am the granddaughter and daughter of Quechua women, and my grandparents also come from the highlands of Peru. That Andean heritage was always present in my family environment, although my immediate world was the Amazonian lowlands. The Andean and the Amazonian coexisted organically at home: in gestures, in practices, and in the way of understanding life.

This inherited knowledge is the foundation of my work: knowledge of plants, my grandmother’s reading of coca leaves, natural dyes, collective and domestic rituals, Andean spirituality, and its cosmovisions. To this is added a memory built in direct relation to the territory where I grew up and, above all, with women: women from my city and from the Indigenous communities of my territory.

In this intersection of inheritances, displacements, and shared experiences, my practice takes shape. My work does not seek to represent that origin, but to activate it, to tension it, and to bring it into dialogue with my own lived experiences, which over time I understood are not individual, but deeply collective and ancestral.

In your practice you work with organic materials, collected elements, and often collaborative processes. What do you seek to activate through these materials and working dynamics? What does it mean for you to collaborate with other women and with migrant communities?

KZ: As a child, I grew up knowing that a tree is not only wood, leaves, and fruit; that fish are not only food; and that the river is not merely water. For me, the organic is not only matter, but also spirit and memory. What for some are waste, for us are lives.

Iquitos is marked by cycles of extractivism that have torn from the land forms of knowledge, practices, and ways of relating to the world. This process has affected not only living beings, but also their meanings, stripping materials of their collective and ritual dimension.

When I left my territory, I understood that materials such as rubber, coca leaves, or fish scales circulate within colonial logics that have fragmented the histories from which they come. My work seeks for these materials to speak again from their origins, recovering their living, symbolic, and political dimension.

Inviting women and migrant communities into my performances is a way of recognizing that these stories are not mine alone. It is an insistence that knowledge is collective. Working with industrial latex, for example, implies confronting the extractive history of rubber; working with scales means restoring value to what has been discarded and reactivating its transformative potential.

How does the work transform when it is no longer only your body that embodies it?

KZ: No body embodies itself alone. My body is an accumulation of other bodies, of genealogies that inhabit it; of inherited fears and guilt, but also of knowledge and resistance. The body absorbs, transforms, and mimics, but it never ceases to be a space where the collective persists.

That is why I think of my work as something that does not belong solely to my body, but as a body traversed by many others that expand it. My body is a point of passage, not a limit.

When other bodies enter the work, they do not complete it: they displace it. It is in that intersection that it gains real strength, where the gesture ceases to be seen as one’s own and becomes shared, and where the experience multiplies and is re-signified.

The figure of the grandmother and mother appears as an important axis in your work. What kind of knowledge or force do you find in that feminine genealogy?

KZ: My maternal grandmother, a Quechua speaker, was a reader of coca leaves in her community and a food vendor in the market. My paternal grandmother, also Andean, migrated to the capital and worked in domestic service, carrying her son in her womb—my father.

My mother embodies endless stories in which the market as a workspace, internal migration as an imposed condition, and everyday ritual spirituality form an essential part of her life, of my memories with her, and of my own existence. These women are my seeds. I have been formed in the compost of their memories.

In my body I carry not only their trajectories and struggles, but also their questions, their silences, and their ways of sustaining life. To speak of myself is to speak of them. What begins as an intimate and familial story expands toward the feminine. My work emerges from that living genealogy where the feminine is not only a theme, but a structural force, a form of knowledge, and of resistance.

Your migratory experience runs deeply through your practice. How has it influenced your way of thinking about the body, identity, and displacement?

KZ: The migratory experience runs through my practice in multiple layers: from the migrations of my ancestors, often forced by violence and inequality, to the one I myself have embodied, also shaped by a context that restricted my ways of inhabiting and existing. Migration implies constant reconfiguration, like a body shedding its skin; each context leaves marks that remain in tension within the body.

In my work, migration is not only a theme, but a structural condition. It appears as trace and fracture, but also as potential. I am interested in thinking about the migrant body not only from uprootedness, but as a body that carries memories, translates territories, and generates new forms of relation and meaning. My practice is situated in that in-between: between what is left behind, what is carried, and what is transformed.

Your performances often activate the sensory (sound, touch, smell) as a fundamental part of the experience. How do you think about the relationship with the viewer from that perspective? Are you interested in provoking a specific reaction or opening a more sensory and intuitive space?

KZ: When I carried out my first actions in my territory, I did not understand them as performance within contemporary art; they emerged from rituals I shared with my mother, where the body, gesture, sound, and environment were deeply intertwined. Although I now engage with more formalized languages of contemporary art, the root of my practice remains sensory, ritual, and relational.

I do not seek to provoke a specific reaction or to direct a closed reading, but to open a space where each body, human or not, enters into relation with the experience. When people speak of “spectators,” I do not refer only to people, but also to the earth, plants, rivers, and elements that perceive and transform the action. Therefore, they cease to be mere observers of the action and become part of it. The work is completed within that network of sensitive relations where everything present participates.

In May you will present a performance at the Thyssen Museum, in dialogue with a painting by Gauguin. How did this project come about, and what are you interested in bringing into play in this encounter between your practice and that work?

KZ: Pri-mitiva: como planta a la tierra arises from the need to reclaim the word “primitive,” not from its colonial charge, but from its primary and vital meaning. I am interested in thinking of the primitive as that which sustains life: the seed, the compost, the root. Because before the root there is the seed, and before the seed, the matter that nourishes it.

The work enters into dialogue with Gauguin through friction. For me, Gauguin is not the center; to some extent, that role belongs to Flora Tristán, his grandmother. Starting from Mata Mua, I imagine the invisible genealogies behind those images: women represented through a colonial, exoticized, and violent gaze. The performance proposes to displace that gaze, to speak from those women and not about them; from the grandmother and not from the painter. And in displacing him, I also confront him.

This action has been developed as a weaving of memories. The scales that accompany the masks were pishtadas—the action of removing scales from the skin of the fish—with women from my territory, and were worked on together with the LGBTQ+ community of my city, with whom I actively participate as a drag queen. Later, these pieces will be worn by the migrant drag community in Madrid—drags of Peruvian and Bolivian origin—who will incorporate their own stories in dialogue with these materials and with the memories that the Atlantic has carried.

The work opens a chain of the feminine that crosses territories, times, and bodies, and it erupts into a museum space like the Thyssen, where works have historically been exhibited through colonial logics and where these bodies have been more objects of representation than presences.

Primitiva como planta en la tierra is an eruption. I do not recognize any center. Everything is transit, transformation, and collective construction. In that becoming, every body is multiple, every body is drag.

In the new performance that I will present at the Thyssen this May 13, the river enters the museum through its skins. The scales, worked by women’s hands, condense memory, labor, and relationship with the territory. Cumbia erupts into a space historically associated with silent contemplation. Drag appears as a form of transformation, resistance, and community.

Kay Zevallos Villegas es una artista de performance cuya práctica se extiende hacia la escultura y la instalación, arraigada en el cuerpo como un territorio vivo moldeado por saberes ancestrales, la memoria y el entorno. A partir de su herencia andina-quechua y de su crianza en la Amazonía peruana, su trabajo surge desde lo ritual y formas colectivas de conocimiento.

Tu trabajo se mueve entre performance, escultura e instalación, aunque la performance parece ocupar un lugar central. ¿Cómo empezó tu interés por ese lenguaje? ¿Fue tu punto de partida como artista o llegaste a él desde otros medios?

KZ: Para mí, el cuerpo es un territorio que se construye con las memorias y saberes de nuestrxs ancestrxs, del entorno y de las propias vivencias. En mi práctica, la performance no aparece como un medio en sí mismo, sino como un diálogo con ese territorio vivo.

Mi acercamiento no proviene de una tradición académica del arte contemporáneo, sino de mi herencia andina-quechua y, sobre todo, de haber crecido en la Amazonía peruana, donde el gesto, el mito, la transformación y la relación con aquello que está más allá de lo visible forman parte de la vida cotidiana. Comencé con el baile desde niña, con las danzas tradicionales de mi región, pero con el tiempo entendí que esos movimientos no eran solo coreográficos, sino también portadores de memoria y transmisión.

La performance se convierte en un umbral donde el cuerpo no es visto como ente individual, sino colectivo, ancestral y capaz de imaginar otras formas de vida. La escultura, la imagen y la instalación emergen como huellas o extensiones de ese acontecimiento, como parte de un ritual que no termina en su ejecución, sino que continúa dialogando con la materia, que a su vez se vuelve cuerpo.

Creciste en Iquitos, en la Amazonía urbana peruana. ¿De qué manera ese entorno ha marcado tu práctica? ¿Cómo dialoga tu obra con los saberes, memorias y formas de relación con el mundo que heredaste?

KZ: Nací en Lima, pero eso es, en cierto modo, una cuestión administrativa: llegué a Iquitos muy pequeña. Fue allí donde aprendí a relacionarme con el mundo, donde se formó mi conciencia y donde comenzó todo.

Soy nieta e hija de mujeres quechuas, y mis abuelos provienen también de la sierra del Perú. Esa herencia andina estuvo siempre presente en mi entorno familiar, aunque mi mundo inmediato era la llanura amazónica. Lo andino y amazónico convivían de manera orgánica en casa: en los gestos, en las prácticas y en la forma de entender la vida.

Esos saberes heredados son la base de mi trabajo: el conocimiento de las plantas, la lectura de hojas de coca de mi abuela, los tintes naturales, los rituales colectivos y domésticos, la espiritualidad andina y sus cosmovisiones. A esto se suma una memoria construida en relación directa con el territorio que me vio crecer y, sobre todo, con las mujeres: mujeres de mi ciudad y de los pueblos originarios de mi territorio.

En ese cruce de herencias, desplazamientos y experiencias compartidas se configura mi práctica. Mi obra no busca representar ese origen, sino activarlo, tensionarlo y hacerlo dialogar con mis propias vivencias, que con el tiempo entendí que no son individuales, sino profundamente colectivas y ancestrales.

En tu práctica trabajas con materiales orgánicos, elementos recolectados y procesos muchas veces colaborativos. ¿Qué buscas activar a través de esos materiales y esas dinámicas de trabajo? ¿Qué significa para ti colaborar con otras mujeres y con comunidades migrantes?

KZ: De niña crecí sabiendo que un árbol no es solo madera, hojas y frutos; que los peces no son solo alimento, y que el río no es únicamente agua. Lo orgánico, para mí, no es solo materia, sino también espíritu y memoria. Lo que para algunxs son desechos, para nosotres son vidas.

Iquitos está atravesada por ciclos de extractivismo que han arrancado de la tierra saberes, prácticas y formas de relación con el mundo. Ese proceso ha afectado no solo a lo vivo, sino también a sus significados, despojando a las materias de su dimensión colectiva y ritual.

Al salir de mi territorio entendí que materias como el caucho, la hoja de coca o las escamas circulan dentro de lógicas coloniales que han fragmentado las historias de donde provienen. Mi trabajo busca que esas materias vuelvan a hablar desde sus orígenes, recuperando su dimensión viva, simbólica y política.

Invitar a mujeres y comunidades migrantes en mis performances es reconocer que estas historias no son solo mías. Es insistir en que el conocimiento es colectivo. Trabajar con látex industrial, por ejemplo, implica confrontar la historia extractiva del caucho; trabajar con escamas, devolver valor a aquello que ha sido descartado y reactivar su potencia transformadora.

¿Cómo se transforma la obra cuando ya no es solo tu cuerpo el que la encarna?

KZ: Ningún cuerpo se encarna solo. Mi cuerpo es un cúmulo de otros cuerpos, de genealogías que habitan en él; de miedos y culpas heredadas, pero también de saberes y resistencias. El cuerpo absorbe, se transforma, se mimetiza, pero nunca deja de ser un espacio donde lo colectivo insiste.

Por eso, pienso mi obra como algo que no pertenece únicamente a mi cuerpo, sino como un cuerpo atravesado por muchos otros que lo expanden. Mi cuerpo es un punto de tránsito, no un límite.

Cuando otros cuerpos entran en la obra, no la completan: la desplazan. Es en ese cruce donde cobra verdadera fuerza, donde el gesto deja de ser visto como propio para volverse compartido, y donde la experiencia se multiplica y se resignifica.

La figura de la abuela y mamá aparecen como un eje importante en tu trabajo. ¿Qué tipo de conocimiento, memoria o fuerza encuentras en esa genealogía femenina?

KZ: Mi abuela materna, quechua-hablante, era lectora de hojas de coca en su comunidad y vendedora de comida en el mercado. Mi abuela paterna, también andina, migró a la capital y se empleó en el servicio doméstico, llevando consigo a su hijo en el vientre, mi padre.

Mi madre encarna historias interminables donde el mercado como espacio de trabajo, la migración interna como condición impuesta y la espiritualidad ritual cotidiana forman parte esencial de su vida, de mis recuerdos con ella y de mi propia existencia. Estas mujeres son mis semillas. Me he formado en el abono de sus memorias.

En mi cuerpo cargo no solo sus trayectorias y luchas, sino también sus preguntas, sus silencios y sus formas de sostener la vida. Hablar de mí es hablar de ellas. Lo que comienza como una historia íntima y familiar se expande hacia lo femenino. Mi trabajo parte desde esa genealogía viva donde lo femenino no es solo un tema, sino una fuerza estructural, una forma de conocimiento y de resistencia.

Tu experiencia migratoria atraviesa tu práctica de manera muy profunda. ¿Cómo ha influido en tu manera de pensar el cuerpo, la identidad y el desplazamiento?

KZ: La experiencia migratoria atraviesa mi práctica desde múltiples capas: desde las migraciones de mis ancestrxs, muchas veces forzadas por violencia y desigualdad, hasta la que yo misma he encarnado, también condicionada por un contexto que restringía mis formas de habitar y existir. Migrar implica reconfigurarse constantemente, como un cuerpo que muda de piel; cada contexto deja marcas que permanecen en tensión dentro del cuerpo.

En mi trabajo, la migración no es solo un tema, sino una condición estructural. Aparece como huella y fractura, pero también como potencia. Me interesa pensar el cuerpo migrante no solo desde el desarraigo, sino como un cuerpo que porta memorias, traduce territorios y genera nuevas formas de relación y sentido. Mi práctica se sitúa en ese entre: entre lo que se deja, lo que se carga y lo que se transforma.

Tus performances suelen activar lo sensorial (el sonido, el tacto, el olor) como parte fundamental de la experiencia. ¿Cómo piensas la relación con el espectador desde ahí? ¿Te interesa provocar una reacción específica o abrir un espacio más sensorial e intuitivo?

KZ: Cuando realicé mis primeras acciones en mi territorio no las entendía como performance dentro del arte contemporáneo; surgían de los rituales que compartía con mi madre, donde el cuerpo, el gesto, el sonido y el entorno estaban profundamente entrelazados. Aunque hoy dialogue con lenguajes más formalizados del arte contemporáneo, la raíz de mi práctica sigue siendo sensorial, ritual y relacional.

No busco provocar una reacción específica ni dirigir una lectura cerrada, sino abrir un espacio donde cada cuerpo, humano o no, entre en relación con la experiencia. Cuando se habla de “espectadores”, yo no me refiero solo a personas, sino también a la tierra, las plantas, los ríos y los elementos que perciben y transforman la acción. Por lo tanto, dejan de ser solo observadores de la acción, sino parte de ella. La obra se completa en esa red de relaciones sensibles donde todo lo presente participa.

En mayo presentarás una performance en el Museo Thyssen, en diálogo con una pintura de Gauguin. ¿Cómo surgió este proyecto y qué te interesa poner en juego en ese cruce entre tu práctica y esa obra?

KZ: Pri-mitiva: como planta a la tierra parte de la necesidad de reapropiarme de la palabra “primitivo”, no desde su carga colonial, sino desde su sentido primario y vital. Me interesa pensar lo primitivo como aquello que sostiene la vida: la semilla, el abono, la raíz. Porque antes de la raíz está la semilla, y antes de la semilla, la materia que la nutre.

La obra dialoga con Gauguin desde la fricción. Para mí, Gauguin no es el centro; en cierta medida, lo es Flora Tristán, su abuela. A partir de Mata Mua, imagino las genealogías invisibles detrás de esas imágenes: las mujeres representadas desde una mirada colonial, exotizada y violenta. La performance propone desplazar esa mirada, hablar desde esas mujeres y no sobre ellas; desde la abuela y no desde el pintor. Y, al desplazarlo, también lo confronto.

Esta acción se ha gestado como un tejido de memorias. Las escamas que acompañan las máscaras las pishtamos — acción de sacar las escamas de la piel del pescado — con mujeres de mi territorio y fueron trabajadas junto con la comunidad LGBTQ+ de mi ciudad, con la que participo activamente como drag queen. Luego, estas piezas serán portadas por la comunidad drag migrante en Madrid, drags de origen peruano y boliviano, quienes incorporarán sus propias historias en diálogo con esas materias y con las memorias que el Atlántico ha transportado.

La obra abre una cadena de lo femenino que atraviesa territorios, tiempos y cuerpos, e irrumpe en un espacio museal como el Thyssen, donde históricamente se han expuesto obras desde lógicas coloniales y donde estos cuerpos han sido más objeto de representación que presencia.

Primitiva como planta en la tierra es una irrupción. Yo no reconozco ningún centro. Todo es tránsito, transformación y construcción colectiva. En ese devenir, todo cuerpo es múltiple, todo cuerpo es drag.

En la performance inédita que presentaré en el Thyssen este 13 de mayo, el río entra al museo a través de sus pieles. Las escamas, trabajadas por manos de mujeres, condensan memoria, trabajo y relación con el territorio. La cumbia irrumpe en un espacio históricamente asociado a la contemplación silenciosa. El drag se presenta como una forma de transformación, resistencia y comunidad.
